The original 10 aliens, ranked
| Rank | Alien | Best use | Why it ranks here |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Upgrade | Technology, adaptation, problem-solving | The most versatile form in the original lineup |
| 2 | Diamondhead | Defense and all-purpose combat | A powerful, durable, and flexible fighter |
| 3 | XLR8 | Speed, rescue, pursuit, and evasion | Mobility solves an extraordinary range of problems |
| 4 | Heatblast | Firepower and environmental control | Iconic and powerful, although less precise in some settings |
| 5 | Four Arms | Strength and durability | The lineup’s most reliable physical powerhouse |
| 6 | Ghostfreak | Stealth and infiltration | Offers abilities no conventional fighter can duplicate |
| 7 | Grey Matter | Intelligence and technical solutions | Small in size but potentially decisive in complex situations |
| 8 | Wildmutt | Tracking and sensory detection | A valuable specialist with a narrower combat role |
| 9 | Stinkfly | Flight and ranged restraint | Useful in the air, but less durable and distinctive than the forms above |
| 10 | Ripjaws | Underwater combat and movement | Extremely effective in water, but the most situational overall |
1. Upgrade
Upgrade earns the top spot because technology is his defining advantage. He is not limited to punching harder, moving faster, or producing a larger attack. In a world filled with vehicles, computers, security systems, weapons, and other machines, Upgrade can turn the environment itself into a resource.
That makes him valuable in both action scenes and problem-solving situations. He can interact with technology, adapt to technological surroundings, and help Ben approach obstacles that the more combat-focused aliens cannot handle. His specialty is especially important because the Omnitrix does not always transform Ben at the most convenient moment; Upgrade remains useful even when brute force is the wrong answer.
Upgrade is not necessarily the strongest alien in a direct contest. Against a purely physical threat, Diamondhead or Four Arms may be a better choice. But this ranking asks which form gives Ben the broadest set of practical options. On that measure, Upgrade is the best overall package.
2. Diamondhead
Diamondhead is the original ten’s most dependable all-around combat form. His crystal-based body supports both offense and defense, allowing him to withstand danger while creating forceful attacks of his own. He feels useful in almost any conventional fight rather than being limited to one environment or one kind of opponent.

The crystal body immediately communicates strength, durability, and something unusual about the form. Diamondhead falls just short of first place because his abilities do not offer Upgrade’s same level of technological adaptability or puzzle-solving utility.
If the ranking were based only on combat reliability, Diamondhead would have the strongest case for number one. He is the safest recommendation when Ben needs a form that can attack, defend, and stay in the fight.
3. XLR8
XLR8 is the mobility king. His speed is useful for far more than winning a footrace: he can pursue fleeing enemies, reach people in danger, scout an area, evade attacks, and intervene before a situation gets worse.
Speed also changes how a fight works. XLR8 can control distance and create opportunities that slower forms cannot. In rescue scenarios, that advantage may matter more than raw strength. A fast response can prevent damage rather than merely repair it afterward.
Recommended Free Tools
The limitation is that speed does not automatically solve every problem. XLR8 may still struggle with heavy defenses, technical obstacles, or situations where Ben needs to hold his ground rather than move around it. That keeps him behind Upgrade and Diamondhead in an all-purpose ranking, but his usefulness is exceptional.
4. Heatblast
Heatblast is one of the defining images of Ben 10 and the first alien transformation most closely associated with Ben’s journey. Fire and heat give him strong offensive power, environmental utility, and considerable visual impact. He is an immediately understandable superhero concept: a child who can become a living fireball.

Heatblast’s high placement is not based on nostalgia alone. Fire can attack at range, influence the surrounding environment, and create solutions that ordinary physical strength cannot. He is also one of the most memorable forms in the original series, which gives him unusual narrative importance.
His drawback is control. Fire is not always the right tool in a crowded area, near fragile objects, or anywhere collateral damage is a major concern. Heatblast is powerful and iconic, but not as universally convenient as Diamondhead or Upgrade.
5. Four Arms
Four Arms is the dependable powerhouse of the original ten. When the problem is a heavy object, a physical opponent, or a situation that requires extraordinary strength and durability, he is usually an obvious choice.
His appeal comes from reliability. Four Arms does not require a complicated plan or a specialized environment. He provides a direct answer to direct physical danger, and his larger-than-life appearance gives him the classic superhero presence that helped make him one of Ben’s essential transformations.
He ranks below Heatblast because his solution set is narrower. Four Arms cannot match Upgrade’s technological flexibility, XLR8’s speed, or Ghostfreak’s stealth. Still, “straightforward” should not be confused with “limited in every respect.” A strong, durable form is often exactly what Ben needs.
6. Ghostfreak
Ghostfreak brings an entirely different kind of utility to the Omnitrix. His stealth-oriented abilities include intangibility, invisibility, and possession, giving Ben options for infiltration, surprise attacks, escape, and reconnaissance.
Those powers cannot be replaced by simply choosing a stronger or faster alien. Ghostfreak can approach problems indirectly, bypass obstacles, and operate in ways that conventional combat forms cannot. That makes him one of the most strategically interesting members of the original lineup.
He sits in the middle of the ranking because his abilities are specialized. They are extremely valuable when stealth is the priority, but less useful when Ben needs sustained physical power or a simple all-purpose fighter. Ghostfreak’s storyline also introduces complications that make him feel less straightforward as an everyday transformation.
7. Grey Matter
Grey Matter demonstrates that the Omnitrix’s smallest form can still solve some of its biggest problems. His defining advantage is intelligence. He can reason through technical and logical challenges that strength, speed, and fire cannot overcome.
The contrast between Grey Matter’s advanced intellect and Ben’s usual childlike behavior is central to the form’s appeal. The transformation asks Ben to win through observation and cleverness rather than force. In the right situation, that makes Grey Matter more valuable than a physically powerful alien.

- The size of toys figurines is ideal for a teen's hand. They look big and massive for a teens. The classic heroes are approximately 3.5 to 5.1 inch tall
Grey Matter ranks seventh because his usefulness depends heavily on the type of problem and on Ben applying the form intelligently. He is physically unimposing and is not the ideal answer to a straightforward brawl. As a strategic specialist, however, he is indispensable to the original ten.
8. Wildmutt
Wildmutt is the lineup’s sensory specialist. His animal-like abilities make him especially useful for tracking people, detecting danger, and navigating situations where normal human senses are not enough.
That role gives the original ten important variety. Wildmutt is not just another fighter; he helps Ben find what is hidden and react to threats that may not be visible. His unusual physical design reinforces that purpose and makes him distinct from the more humanoid forms.
He ranks lower because his options in an ordinary confrontation are narrower. Wildmutt lacks conventional ranged attacks and cannot communicate in the same human-style way as many of Ben’s other transformations. Those limitations do not make him weak—they make him a specialist whose best situations occur less often.
9. Stinkfly
Stinkfly contributes flight, insect-like mobility, and ranged adhesive attacks. Those abilities make him useful in aerial situations, for reaching difficult locations, and for restraining targets without relying entirely on brute force.
It would be unfair to call Stinkfly useless or simply the weakest alien. Flight alone can change the available routes in a rescue or pursuit, while adhesive attacks provide a practical way to slow or capture an opponent. He fills a specific role in the original group.
He falls to ninth because that role overlaps with other forms while offering less durability and impact than the higher-ranked aliens. Stinkfly is valuable when the situation favors air mobility or restraint, but he is not as broadly dependable as XLR8, Diamondhead, or Four Arms.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.10. Ripjaws
Ripjaws is not weak; he is specialized. In water, his aquatic abilities make him an obvious and potentially formidable choice. He gives Ben underwater mobility and combat capability that the rest of the original ten cannot match.
The problem is frequency. Most of Ben’s adventures do not take place entirely underwater, so Ripjaws has fewer opportunities to operate at his best. Outside aquatic environments, his usefulness is more limited than that of the other nine forms.
That environmental dependence places Ripjaws last in an overall ranking. In an underwater rescue or fight, he could rise dramatically—possibly above several forms ranked higher here. His position reflects versatility across the series, not a verdict that he is inferior in his own environment.

Why this ranking is subjective
There is no single objectively strongest alien among the original ten because each form was built around a different specialty: fire, strength, supernatural abilities, crystal-based defense, intelligence, swimming, technology, sensory detection, flight, and speed.
A combat-only list could put Diamondhead, Heatblast, or Four Arms at number one. A recognizability ranking might lead with Heatblast or Four Arms. A stealth ranking would naturally elevate Ghostfreak, while an underwater ranking would make Ripjaws the obvious choice. Upgrade is number one here because the criteria include versatility and practical problem-solving alongside combat.

The exact scope: the original 2005 ten
This list covers the first ten forms in the original Ben 10 series:
- Heatblast
- Wildmutt
- Diamondhead
- XLR8
- Grey Matter
- Four Arms
- Stinkfly
- Ripjaws
- Upgrade
- Ghostfreak
It does not quietly add aliens introduced later in the classic continuity, such as Cannonbolt, Wildvine, or Upchuck. Nor does it combine the original series with the 2016 reboot. Keeping that boundary matters because later transformations would change both the competition and the meaning of “the original ten.”
Collecting and revisiting the original lineup
Collectors looking to recreate this specific ranking can search for Ben 10 original-series alien action figures. The original ten received a documented 4-inch action-figure collection, but those toys date to the mid-2000s. Availability, condition, completeness, and price can therefore vary substantially between listings; check the exact character, accessories, packaging, and seller details before buying.
For a rewatch, look specifically for Ben 10 (2005), rather than a later sequel series or the 2016 reboot. U.S. viewing options have included a mixture of ad-supported services, paid streaming or digital purchase, and DVD listings. Catalogs, regions, prices, and rights change, so verify current availability on the date you plan to watch.
Final verdict
Upgrade is the best overall original Ben 10 alien when versatility is the deciding factor. Diamondhead is the strongest all-around fighter, XLR8 offers the greatest mobility, Heatblast remains the defining icon, and Four Arms is the most dependable brute-force solution. Ghostfreak, Grey Matter, Wildmutt, Stinkfly, and Ripjaws rank lower because their strongest advantages are more specialized—not because they fail at what they were designed to do.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is Upgrade the number one original Ben 10 alien?
Upgrade ranks first because his technology-focused abilities make him useful for more than direct combat. He can interact with machines and turn technological surroundings into advantages, giving him broader problem-solving value than the more specialized forms.
Is Diamondhead stronger than Upgrade?
Diamondhead is the best choice if the ranking is limited to all-around combat. His crystal-based body supports both offense and defense, although he is less adaptable than Upgrade in technological or puzzle-solving situations.
Is Ripjaws really the weakest original Ben 10 alien?
No. Ripjaws is highly valuable underwater, where his aquatic abilities give him an advantage the other original aliens do not share. He ranks tenth only because that environment occurs less often than the situations favored by the other forms.
