Spotify’s Premium audiobook benefit launched in the United States on November 8, 2023—not in 2026. Eligible subscribers receive up to 15 hours of listening each month from a changing catalog of books labeled “Included in Premium.” It is not unlimited audiobook streaming, and the benefit does not apply to Premium Student or automatically extend to every member of a Duo or Family plan.
What launched, and when?
Spotify has made three different U.S. audiobook announcements that are easy to confuse:
| Date | What happened | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| September 20, 2022 | Spotify introduced audiobook purchasing in the U.S. | Users could buy individual audiobooks from Spotify’s store. Spotify’s announcement described a catalog of more than 300,000 titles. |
| November 8, 2023 | Premium audiobook listening launched in the U.S. | Eligible Premium subscribers received 15 monthly hours from Spotify’s subscriber catalog. The launch announcement cited more than 200,000 included titles. Read Spotify’s launch announcement. |
| March 1, 2024 | Audiobooks Access launched. | A separate U.S. plan offered 15 audiobook hours with ad-supported music and podcasts. Spotify announced a $9.99 monthly launch price; current account pricing can differ. |
| August 5, 2025 | Audiobooks+ began rolling out in the U.S. | Eligible Premium subscribers could add another 15 hours per month. Availability and pricing depend on the account and market. |
Spotify later described its subscriber catalog as exceeding 250,000 titles, but catalog size and eligibility change as licensing agreements change. The original 2023 announcement also claimed that more than 70% of bestsellers were included at that time; that was Spotify’s dated description, not a permanent guarantee.
What Premium includes now
- 15 hours per month of audiobook listening.
- Access only to titles in the subscriber catalog marked “Included in Premium.”
- Eligibility for Premium Individual subscribers and the managers of Premium Duo and Premium Family plans.
- No included audiobook hours with Premium Student.
- Offline downloads, bookmarking and playback-speed controls, although interface labels and device support can vary by app version and platform.
Spotify’s current plan information is available at its Premium audiobook support page. A book appearing in Spotify search is not necessarily included: some titles remain individual purchases.

How to find books included with Premium
- Open Spotify and select Search.
- Under Browse All, choose Audiobooks.
- Open a title and confirm that it displays the “Included in Premium” label.
The exact placement can vary slightly between iOS, Android, desktop and connected devices. Use the label rather than assuming that every audiobook in search results is covered. Spotify explains the catalog rules at its subscriber-catalog support page.
How the 15-hour allowance is calculated
Spotify deducts the audiobook’s normal runtime, not merely the time you spend listening in real time. A five-hour book still uses five hours of allowance when played at 2× speed. Faster playback therefore helps you finish sooner but does not stretch the entitlement.
- Pausing and resuming does not restore consumed time.
- A long book can exceed the monthly allowance before it is finished.
- Do not assume unused hours roll over; Spotify’s current terms describe a monthly allowance without promising accumulation.
- Use a sleep timer, particularly an end-of-chapter option where available, to avoid spending hours after falling asleep.
- Offline listening is supported, but Spotify says tracking can be delayed after extended offline use or when playback is paused mid-chapter. Reconnect and allow the app to synchronize before judging the balance.
What happens when the hours run out?
Top-ups
Spotify lets eligible subscribers buy additional listening time separately. Top-up hours are valid for 12 months from purchase, multiple top-ups can be added, and an eligible Premium plan must remain active to use them. Canceling the underlying Premium subscription ends access to the audiobook add-on. Spotify’s original launch announcement mentioned a 10-hour top-up, but do not treat that as current pricing or packaging; check the logged-in checkout.
Audiobooks+
Audiobooks+ is a recurring add-on announced in 2025 that provides an additional 15 hours each month for eligible Premium Individual subscribers and Duo or Family managers. Spotify’s U.S. audiobook page has shown a price signal of $11.99 per month after a trial, but trial eligibility and account pricing must be confirmed in the live signup flow: spotify.com/us/audiobooks.
Individual purchases
Titles outside the subscriber catalog can be purchased individually. This is a separate transaction from the monthly Premium allowance and is the clearest option when you want continued access to a particular book rather than a time-limited subscription entitlement.
Audiobooks Access: audiobook hours without full Premium
Audiobooks Access is a U.S.-only plan introduced on March 1, 2024. It provides 15 audiobook hours per month plus ad-supported music and podcasts, but not the other features of full Premium. Existing Premium subscribers must cancel and wait until their current billing period ends before switching. Spotify’s launch price was $9.99 per month; verify the current offer before subscribing. Device restrictions apply to some products, including Apple Watch, Garmin and Samsung Watches, Tesla and Car Thing. See Spotify’s Audiobooks Access support page.

Spotify compared with other audiobook options
| Service | Strength | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Spotify Premium | Music, podcasts and a changing audiobook catalog in one app. | 15-hour monthly cap; only selected titles are included; household access is manager-only on Duo and Family. |
| Audible | Built primarily for audiobook subscriptions and purchases, making it more suitable for heavy listeners. | It is a separate audiobook service. Compare its current plans at Audible. |
| Libby | Library borrowing can cost eligible members little or nothing per book. | Availability, licensing, holds and loan periods depend on the participating library. See Libby. |
| Apple Books | Individual purchases for readers who prefer retaining purchased titles. | It is a storefront, not a recurring unlimited catalog. Visit Apple Books. |
| Google Play Books | Individual purchases tied to a Google account, useful for Android users. | It does not provide Spotify’s monthly Premium entitlement. Visit Google Play Books. |
Is Spotify a good value?
Light listeners
Spotify is convenient if you already pay for Premium and usually finish about one average-length audiobook, or occasionally two shorter books, within 15 hours. Check the included label before changing plans.
Moderate listeners
If you regularly exceed 15 hours, compare the cost of Audiobooks+ or top-ups with buying the specific titles you want. A library loan through Libby may be cheaper when a participating library has the book without a long wait.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Heavy listeners
Readers who finish several long books every month are less likely to find a capped, title-limited allowance economical. A dedicated audiobook subscription, library borrowing or individual purchases may offer a better match, depending on whether immediate access or ownership matters most.

Common problems and fixes
The book appears in Spotify but is not included
Confirm the “Included in Premium” label. If it is absent, the title requires an individual purchase or another service.
A Duo or Family member cannot use audiobook hours
Only the plan manager receives the included allowance. Ask the manager about an available member add-on rather than assuming the shared plan includes it.
A Student subscriber cannot find audiobook hours
Premium Student is excluded. Review current plan terms before switching, especially if preserving the student discount is important.
Best Value
The balance looks wrong after offline listening
Reconnect the device, leave Spotify open long enough to synchronize, and check the allowance again. Spotify documents delayed tracking after extended offline playback.
The practical answer
Spotify’s U.S. Premium audiobook feature is a 15-hour monthly benefit for selected plans, not unlimited access and not a free replacement for every audiobook service. It works best for existing Individual subscribers or Duo and Family managers who want occasional books alongside music and podcasts. Check the inclusion label, monitor the normal runtime consumed, and compare top-ups, Audiobooks+, library borrowing or an individual purchase before committing to a longer book.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I listen to Spotify audiobooks offline?
Yes. Spotify supports audiobook downloads for eligible access, but allowance tracking can be delayed while a device remains offline for an extended period.
Can I buy an audiobook separately on Spotify?
Yes. Audiobooks outside the subscriber catalog can be purchased individually; that purchase is separate from the Premium monthly allowance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDoes playing a book at 2× speed save audiobook hours?
No. Spotify deducts the book’s normal runtime, so a five-hour title uses five hours even at 2× speed.
Can I switch from Premium to Audiobooks Access immediately?
No. Existing Premium subscribers must cancel and wait until their current subscription period ends before joining Audiobooks Access.
