About the Song is Spotify’s beta feature for Premium subscribers that adds short, swipeable context cards to the mobile app’s Now Playing screen. On supported tracks, the cards can explain a song’s inspiration, meaning, production, collaborators or cultural background. Spotify summarizes information from third-party sources, so the feature is useful as a quick guide—not necessarily as an artist-approved or definitive account.
What Spotify’s About the Song feature does
About the Song is an in-app context layer introduced by Spotify on February 6, 2026. It is designed to answer questions that often arise while listening: Who made this track? What inspired it? What does it mean? How was it recorded? Why did it matter culturally?

Depending on the song, Spotify may show cards about:
- the writing, recording or production process;
- songwriters, producers and other contributors;
- influences and inspirations;
- the meaning or background of the lyrics and music;
- behind-the-scenes anecdotes; and
- the track’s wider cultural context or impact.
The cards are brief and designed for browsing while a song plays. They are not a complete annotation database, a replacement for liner notes, or a full production history. Spotify describes the material as summaries based on reliable third-party information, rather than direct artist annotations. Spotify’s announcement and its support documentation therefore provide the best current description of the feature.

- Play a song that supports the feature.
- Open the Now Playing view.
- Scroll below the main player area.
- Tap the About the Song card when it appears.
- Swipe through the story cards.
Each card includes thumbs-up and thumbs-down controls. You can use them and complete Spotify’s short feedback form to report whether the information was useful. The feature is tied to the mobile Now Playing experience; Spotify’s cited documentation does not promise the same card on desktop or the web player.
Who can use it?
Spotify currently describes About the Song as a Premium feature rolling out on iOS and Android. The mobile app must be version 9.1.6 or later. Language, account region and rollout status also affect access.
Spotify Support currently lists these Premium markets:
- Africa: Nigeria, South Africa
- Asia: India, Indonesia, Singapore
- Europe: Ireland, Spain, United Kingdom
- North America: Canada, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, United States
- Oceania: Australia, New Zealand
- South America: Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, Venezuela
Spotify announced a Spanish-language expansion on June 25, 2026, covering Spain and Spanish-speaking markets including Mexico, Argentina, Colombia, Chile, Peru, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Uruguay and Venezuela. Availability can change as the beta expands. Early reports mentioned only six launch countries—the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand and Australia—but that described the initial rollout, not the current support list.

Why the card may be missing
About the Song is not added to every track. Spotify says a song must reach a minimum level of streams and have enough reliable third-party information available online. Spotify does not publish the exact stream threshold in the cited support article.
Check these conditions before assuming the app is broken:
- Your account is Premium.
- Your account is in a supported country and the relevant language rollout.
- The Spotify mobile app is version 9.1.6 or newer.
- You are looking in mobile Now Playing, not on desktop or the web player.
- The particular track is covered by Spotify’s rollout and eligibility systems.
A practical recovery sequence is:
- Update Spotify through your phone’s app store.
- Check the installed version and confirm it is at least 9.1.6.
- Force-quit and reopen the app.
- Try several well-known, heavily documented songs.
- Return to the mobile Now Playing screen and scroll below the player.
If the card appears for one song but not another, that is expected. An obscure track, a song with little published background, or a track not yet included in the beta may simply be unsupported.
How authoritative are the stories?
The source chain matters. A card may summarize an interview, publication, label material or another third-party source; it is not automatically a first-person statement from the singer, songwriter or producer. A convenient summary can also simplify a disputed interpretation or omit important nuance.

- Perfect for App Store purchases and subscriptions—get apps, games, music, movies, TV shows, and more.
- The perfect gift to say happy birthday, thank you, congratulations, and more.

- Use it for purchases at any Apple Store location, on the Apple Store app, apple.com, the App Store, iTunes, Apple Music, Apple TV, Apple News+, Apple Books, Apple Arcade, iCloud+, Fitness+, Apple One, and other Apple properties in US only
Use the cards as a starting point, then check the original interview, credit listing, liner notes or artist statement when accuracy matters. Distinguish between:
- Spotify’s condensed wording;
- the third-party source on which it is based;
- direct comments from an artist or songwriter; and
- fan theories or interpretations that remain uncertain.
Because About the Song is still in beta, omissions and occasional inaccuracies are possible. The feedback controls are intended to help Spotify improve the feature, but a thumbs-up is not proof that every claim is definitive.
About the Song versus SongDNA
Spotify is developing several ways to expose the people and connections behind recorded music. About the Song and SongDNA overlap in subject matter but answer different questions:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →| Feature | Best for | Format |
|---|---|---|
| About the Song | Meaning, inspiration, production stories and cultural context | Swipeable story cards about one track |
| SongDNA | Collaborators, samples, interpolations, covers and creative lineage | Interactive map of relationships between songs and creators |
Spotify says SongDNA combines information supplied by artists and teams with community-sourced data, including WhoSampled data. It is better suited to following a sample or collaborator trail; About the Song is the quicker option for a narrative snapshot of the track you are already playing. See Spotify’s SongDNA announcement for the distinction.

What artists and teams should know
Artists can preview how Spotify presents their music through Spotify for Artists Preview, subject to Spotify’s eligibility rules. The documented requirements include being an Admin or Editor in Spotify for Artists, having access to an artist profile with at least 1,000 monthly active listeners, being in a supported country or region, and using Spotify mobile version 9.1.6 or later.
Preview access does not guarantee an About the Song card for every release. The same stream and information requirements apply. Accurate credits and clear, reliable public documentation make it easier for Spotify’s context features to represent a track responsibly.
Is it worth using?
For an eligible Premium listener, About the Song is a low-friction way to discover a song’s backstory without leaving Spotify. It can surface a producer, influence or historical detail that might otherwise be missed. Its trade-offs are equally important: it is mobile-only, Premium-only, still rolling out, limited to selected tracks and dependent on third-party summaries.
For deeper research, compare the card with the original source or use specialist services such as Genius for annotations, WhoSampled for samples and interpolations, or Songfacts for background articles. Those services are not replacements for Spotify’s in-player cards, but they can provide more detail or a different editorial perspective.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is About the Song available on Spotify Free?
Spotify’s current support documentation describes listener access for Premium users. Free-tier availability is not promised.
Does every Spotify song have an About the Song card?
No. Spotify adds cards only to supported tracks that meet its stream and reliable-information requirements, and it does not publish the exact stream threshold.
Are About the Song stories written by the artist?
Not necessarily. Spotify says the cards summarize reliable third-party sources, so they should not automatically be treated as direct, artist-approved statements.
The Bottom Line
About the Song is best understood as a convenient, evolving introduction to a track’s story. Update the mobile app, use a Premium account in a supported market and look below Now Playing—but expect coverage to vary, and verify important claims against the original sources.
