A Spotify Premium download and a Local File are different systems: Premium downloads music from Spotify’s catalog, while a Local File must already be transferred to and readable on the device. Confirm which system is failing before reinstalling Spotify.
First, test whether ordinary Spotify downloads work
Open or create a playlist containing a normal Spotify catalog track and try downloading it while online.

Spotify requires an internet connection for the initial download, recommends at least 1 GB of free memory, and advises disabling cache-clearing or battery-saving apps that interfere with downloads. See its Listen Offline instructions.
Why a Local File stays at “Waiting to Download”
- The audio exists on your computer, but not on the phone. A desktop playlist does not prove that the underlying file was transferred.
- Local audio files is disabled in the mobile app, or Spotify cannot rescan the file location.
- The file remains in iCloud Drive, Google Drive, Dropbox or another cloud service instead of device storage.
- Spotify lacks permission to read files or media.
- Storage is full, an SD card is malfunctioning, or a battery optimizer stops Spotify’s background work.
- The individual file has a format, codec, location, filename or metadata problem. Spotify’s current instructions do not publish a complete compatibility matrix, so do not assume every audio format will work.
- You are following an older guide that relies on desktop-to-phone Wi-Fi syncing. Spotify’s current documentation emphasizes direct transfer to iOS or Android; it does not establish that every legacy sync workflow remains available in every app version.
If the same recording is available in Spotify’s catalog, replacing the local entry with the official track is a useful diagnostic. Community guidance has recommended this approach, but it is not a universal official fix: Spotify Community example.

Make Local Files visible on Spotify Desktop
- Open Spotify and click your profile picture.
- Select Settings.
- Scroll to Library and turn on Show Local Files.
- Under Show songs from, enable the relevant folder or choose Add a source.
- Open Your Library → Local Files and confirm that the track plays on the computer.
This only makes the file visible on that computer. It does not place a copy on an iPhone, iPad or Android device. The current setup is documented by Spotify’s Local Files support page.
Fix Local Files on iPhone or iPad
Enable the mobile setting
- Open Spotify and tap your profile picture.
- Tap Settings and privacy.
- Tap Apps and devices.
- Turn on Local audio files.
- Open Your Library → Local Files.
Copy the actual audio file to the device
- In the Files app or another storage app, copy or move the file to On My iPhone → Spotify.
- From a Mac, use Universal Clipboard, iCloud or Finder over USB as appropriate.
- From Windows, connect the iPhone by USB, open iTunes, select the device, open Music or Files, and drag the file into the Spotify folder.
If the Spotify folder is missing under On My iPhone, restart Spotify. Spotify says the folder can disappear if its Help file was deleted.

Fix Local Files on Android
Enable Local Files
- Open Spotify and tap your profile picture.
- Tap Settings and privacy → Apps and devices.
- Turn on Local audio files.
- Open Your Library → Local Files.
Transfer or download the file locally
- Download it from a cloud-storage or other Android app so it is stored on the device, not merely visible online.
- For a Mac, connect the phone and use an Android file-transfer application.
- For Windows, connect by USB, unlock the phone, allow data access, open the device-storage window and drag the file across.
Then return to Local Files and check whether the track appears and plays. File-management and permission labels vary by Android version.
If the playlist is downloaded but local songs are gray
- Verify presence: use the phone’s Files app. On iOS, check On My iPhone → Spotify; on Android, check the folder used for the transfer. A cloud-only file is not enough.
- Check permissions: allow Spotify access to Files, media or device storage in the operating system’s app-permission settings.
- Reset Local Files discovery: turn Local audio files off, turn it on again, restart Spotify, and reopen Your Library → Local Files.
- Check download conditions: for catalog downloads, permit cellular data at Profile picture → Settings and privacy → Data-saving and offline → Downloads and streaming → Downloads over cellular if Wi-Fi is unavailable. This cannot retrieve a local file that is absent from the phone.
- Check capacity and limits: keep at least 1 GB free, disable battery-saving or task-killer apps, and verify that you have not exceeded Spotify’s five-device download limit. Spotify says downloads may be removed from the least recently used device after the limit is exceeded.
- Reconnect periodically: Spotify says offline downloads can become unavailable if the account has not gone online for 30 days.
- Rebuild the entry: remove the local tracks from playlists, recheck the source folder or phone location, add the files again, and recreate the playlist entry. This is Spotify’s documented Local Files troubleshooting sequence.

When replacing the file with Spotify’s catalog version is better
If the exact recording is available in Spotify’s catalog, delete the local copy from the playlist, search for the official track, add it, and download the playlist again. This is usually the most reliable mobile solution, but it can change the mix, mastering, metadata or availability. It also cannot replace a rare edit, demo, bootleg or personal recording that Spotify does not carry.
When Premium helps—and when it does not
Premium enables offline downloads of Spotify’s catalog music. Spotify’s feature page describes downloads of up to 10,000 songs per device across five devices, subject to account and plan rules: Spotify Premium offline downloads. Check the current offer and price before subscribing; promotions and eligibility change.

Premium does not upload a computer-only MP3, grant Spotify access to a missing phone file, repair permissions, or make an unsupported file compatible. It helps only when the desired recording exists in Spotify’s catalog.

Back up or otherwise confirm access to your original local files first. If the problem persists after the checks above, follow Spotify’s clean-reinstall guidance. Reinstalling removes Spotify’s downloaded music and podcasts, which must be downloaded again afterward. Your separately stored local files are not recreated by reinstalling.

When to stop troubleshooting
Use Spotify Local Files when integrating personally owned recordings into Spotify playlists is important. If your main goal is simply reliable playback of an owned library, the official Spotify catalog version (where available), the device’s file player or a dedicated local-music workflow may be more practical. Avoid stream rippers, downloaders and DRM-removal tools: they do not solve a missing Local File and may create copyright or terms-of-service problems.
