The Power of Podcasts: How Audio—and Video—Are Changing Technology Media

Podcasts extend technology journalism through expert conversation and familiar hosts, while video platforms reshape discovery and economics. Growth brings opportunity, but audience measures, trust and profitability require careful judgment.

Podcasts have become a durable part of technology media because they give audiences recurring explanation, expert conversation and recognizable hosts in a format that fits around daily life. But the medium is no longer audio alone: listening, watching and discovering shows through video platforms increasingly overlap. The opportunity for publishers is to use podcasts alongside reporting—not as a replacement for articles—and to build a lasting audience relationship without mistaking views for loyal listeners or reach for profit.

Podcast growth is real, but the measurement is changing

“Podcast” now covers several behaviors: listening to an audio episode, watching a full video show, finding a program through short clips, and consuming radio or newsroom programming repackaged on demand. These are related, but they are not interchangeable. A video view does not necessarily mean someone listened to a full episode, and a platform’s “podcast audience” may include different formats than an audio-only measure.

Edison Research’s The Infinite Dial 2026 reports U.S. highs for podcast and online-audio consumption and frames podcasting as a medium people both listen to and watch. Reuters, citing the latest Edison data, reports that about 45% of Americans consume or watch podcasts weekly. Those figures describe a broadening medium, not audio listening alone. Edison Research, The Infinite Dial 2026; Reuters Institute, The changing shape and new economics of news podcasting

News podcasts are a narrower category. In the Reuters Institute’s 2025 Digital News Report, 14% of U.S. respondents said they consumed news podcasts weekly—a share roughly comparable to those reading a printed newspaper or magazine or listening to news and current affairs on radio. It is useful evidence of a meaningful audience, but it should not be confused with the much broader reach of all podcast-style programming. Other measures answer different questions. Edison’s 2025 report found YouTube was the service used most often by 33% of U.S. weekly podcast listeners. An IAB report, using its stated U.S. platform-share measure for 2024, put YouTube at 31%, Spotify at 27% and Apple Podcasts at 15%. These are distinct surveys and metrics, not a universal ranking of all podcast listening. Edison Research, The Infinite Dial 2025; IAB, Measuring the Digital Economy

Why technology stories suit podcasts

Complex subjects benefit from context

Technology coverage often asks readers to understand not only what happened, but how a system works, what trade-offs it creates and what may happen next. A conversation can give a reporter room to explain uncertainty, compare competing interpretations or ask a specialist follow-up questions. An interview can also bring an engineer, researcher or executive into a story in their own words—while still requiring the journalist to verify consequential claims.

Recurring shows create a useful habit

Technology changes continuously, from product launches and platform policies to security incidents and shifts in the business landscape. A weekly or daily program can synthesize developments that would otherwise arrive as separate headlines. Listeners can also fit an episode into a commute, exercise session or routine task, making regular publication more useful than a one-off audio adaptation.

Voice adds continuity, not automatic credibility

A familiar host can make technical material more approachable and give an audience a reason to return across different subjects. That familiarity may feel intimate, but it does not prove accuracy or trustworthiness. A confident voice can just as easily make a weakly sourced claim more persuasive. Reporting standards, sourcing and corrections remain essential.

From publication brands to journalist-led relationships

Podcasts make reporters, analysts and editors audible and recognizable in a way a byline alone may not. Over time, audiences may follow a host across episodes, newsletters, articles, live events, video and membership products. That continuity can help a publication retain people who would not otherwise visit its site regularly.

The relationship is not automatically direct. If the audience exists only inside a platform, the platform controls much of the discovery and user data. A more durable connection comes from consent-based channels such as newsletters, memberships, event registration or other first-party relationships.

Personality-led publishing has costs as well as benefits. A show can become overdependent on one host; opinion can blur into reporting; and the pressure to produce compelling conversation can reward hot takes over careful verification. Publishers should clarify who owns the feed, archive and audience relationship, and what happens if a central host leaves.

Podcasting works best alongside written journalism

The strongest newsroom model is usually a set of complementary formats. A written report can establish the verified facts; a podcast can explain why they matter, explore a difficult question with an expert or follow a story over time. An investigation might become a serialized audio narrative, while a weekly show can place many smaller developments in context.

A podcast does not necessarily send listeners back to the article. Its value may instead appear in brand recognition, member retention, event attendance, sponsorship, subscriber conversion or the time an audience spends with a publication. Before launching, a publisher should choose which outcome matters and measure it directly rather than assuming that downloads will produce web traffic.

One reported story can support several useful formats

  • Article: a sourced account of what is known and what remains uncertain.
  • Podcast: a reporter’s explanation, a complementary interview or a debate over implications.
  • Video and clips: a visual conversation and shorter excerpts designed for discovery.
  • Transcript and notes: searchable text, names, links and context that make the episode easier to check and reuse.
  • Newsletter or event: a direct route to an audience that wants follow-up or participation.

This is not simply a way to publish the same material repeatedly. Each format should answer a different audience need, and the newsroom should budget for reporting and production rather than treating repurposing as effortless.

Open feeds meet platform ecosystems

Podcasting grew around RSS, which lets a publisher host an episode and distribute it to multiple listening apps. That portability still matters. But large platforms now shape how many people discover shows, watch them, receive recommendations and encounter advertising. Reuters identifies YouTube as the main U.S. channel for podcast distribution, while Spotify is particularly important in markets such as the United Kingdom and Germany. Platform leadership varies by country and by the measure being used. Reuters Institute, 2025 Digital News Report executive summary; Reuters Institute, The changing landscape for news podcasts across countries

Approach What it offers What to watch
Open RSS distribution Portability across podcast apps and greater control over the feed and archive. Discovery may require a separate plan; publishing a feed alone does not create an audience.
Large platform distribution Potential access to recommendations, search, video, analytics and platform monetization tools. Audience access, measurement, monetization and visibility depend partly on platform rules and products.

For a publisher, the practical choice need not be either-or. A show can maintain a portable feed while publishing video and using platforms for discovery. The strategic question is what the publisher retains: its archive, reliable audience measures, consented contact information and the ability to reach listeners if a platform changes its policies or recommendation system.

Video expands the format—and the workload

Video can put a show into YouTube search and recommendations, produce shareable excerpts and add a visual sense of the host and guest. It also creates more potential assets: full episodes, short clips, captions, thumbnails and social posts. The same production may reach viewers who would not seek out an audio feed.

That reach comes with real costs. Cameras, lighting, a credible set, editing, graphics, captioning, storage and moderation add work. Video can improve discovery while weakening a show’s economics if a publisher simply adds a camera without a plan for distribution, audience conversion or revenue. A clip view is not proof that the viewer became a regular listener.

Audio-only remains valuable when people’s eyes are occupied, bandwidth is limited, a screen-free experience is preferred or visual production would add little. Edison’s 2026 work describes a dual-format medium rather than the disappearance of audio. A practical future is therefore audio-first and video-capable: choose the format that suits the story and the audience occasion, not the one that happens to be fashionable. Edison Research, The Infinite Dial 2026

How technology podcasts can make money

Advertising is only one part of a podcast business. Revenue may combine sponsorship, subscriptions, events, licensing, commerce and professional products. The right mix depends on the show’s audience, its costs and the publisher’s commercial capabilities.

Revenue source How it can work Trade-off
Advertising and sponsorship Host-read spots, inserted ads, branded segments, presenting sponsorships, video integrations or bundles with newsletters and events. Ads can interrupt listening; smaller shows may not meet buyer thresholds, and downloads do not establish completion or sales attribution.
Subscriptions and memberships Ad-free listening, bonus episodes, private feeds or access to a community. Only a portion of the audience is likely to pay, and exclusive material can split the audience.
Events and professional products Live recordings, conferences, executive roundtables, training, research, consulting or premium briefings. These require sales and delivery capabilities beyond publishing episodes.
Commerce and licensing Clearly disclosed referrals, books, courses, software or hardware recommendations, and licensed content. Commercial relationships must not distort editorial judgment; disclosures and separation are essential.

The IAB/PwC U.S. Podcast Advertising Revenue Study tracks U.S. advertising revenue, category distribution and projections through 2026; its figures should be read in the context of its tables and definitions. Reuters reports that news podcasts do not receive the largest share of podcast advertising in the markets it discusses, with comedy and sports stronger categories. A specialist technology show may still be commercially valuable if it reaches engineers, executives or buyers, even without mass-market scale. IAB, U.S. Podcast Advertising Revenue Study; Reuters Institute, The changing landscape for news podcasts across countries

Costs matter just as much as audience size. A simple audio conversation, a daily newsroom operation and a reported series with travel, research, legal review and polished sound design are different businesses. A large audience can still be unprofitable if completion is weak, sponsor fit is poor, production is costly or the publisher cannot convert listeners into customers or members.

Measure the behavior, not just the biggest number

Podcast metrics describe different parts of the audience journey. Downloads, streams, starts, unique listeners, completion, followers, video views, watch time, clip views, ad impressions, newsletter signups and paid conversions should not be collapsed into a single “audience” figure.

  • Is the number a download, stream, view or estimated unique person?
  • Does it include autoplay, full episodes or short clips?
  • Is the figure platform-reported or independently audited?
  • Does it describe a weekly, monthly or cumulative period, and which geography?
  • Are audio and video audiences deduplicated?
  • Does the metric connect to the show’s primary goal, such as retention, sponsorship or paid conversion?

Edison’s Podcast Consumer 2026 reports that daily podcast consumers spent 5 hours and 11 minutes per day with all audio sources in its Share of Ear study for Q1 2026. That is total time with audio—not time listening to podcasts—so it illustrates why the label attached to a number matters. Edison Research, The Podcast Consumer 2026

Transcripts turn episodes into a usable archive

An audio file alone is difficult to search, quote or check quickly. Transcripts, detailed episode notes and structured chapters make a show more accessible and help listeners find a relevant passage. They also support fact-checking, newsroom research, newsletter excerpts and repurposing into written coverage.

Transcription and indexing tools can reduce production friction, but a transcript needs human review for names, technical terms and quotations. Captions are important for video accessibility; transcripts and clear episode notes also help people who cannot or do not want to listen. A searchable archive extends the value of a program beyond its release date.

Editorial standards are the foundation of trust

Conversational formats can make interviews engaging, but they can also let unsupported claims pass unchallenged. A guest may be promoting a product, a host may have a conflict, or an edit may remove context. Audio and video also raise questions about synthetic voices, manipulated recordings, platform moderation and native advertising that sounds like editorial content.

A publication producing technology podcasts should set explicit standards:

AI can lower production friction, not replace editorial judgment

AI tools can assist with transcription, translation, audio cleanup, clip selection, chaptering, show notes, summaries and search. Human review remains necessary: automated systems can mishear technical vocabulary, omit context or introduce errors into summaries. Synthetic narration and AI-generated programs raise additional questions about disclosure, copyright, authenticity and who is accountable for a claim.

Lower production costs may lead to more output, not necessarily better programs. As inexpensive synthetic material becomes easier to publish, distinctive reporting, informed hosts and transparent editorial practices become more valuable ways to earn attention. There is no basis to assume that AI will eliminate podcast production jobs; the more immediate change is that routine tasks can be accelerated while editorial responsibility remains.

When a technology publisher should launch a show

A podcast is a stronger fit when a publication has a repeatable subject, a distinctive point of view, credible hosts, access to reporting or guests others cannot offer, and capacity to publish consistently. It also needs a distribution plan beyond uploading episodes, plus a clear reason for the show to exist alongside written coverage.

It is a weaker fit when the idea is merely to read headlines aloud, the subject is mostly transactional and better served by searchable text, no host has the right expertise or chemistry, or the business case depends on immediate advertising. Adding video just because competitors do it is not a strategy either.

Set the objective before the first episode

  1. Choose the outcome: reach, brand awareness, subscriber retention, event sales, advertising, enterprise leads or public-service impact.
  2. Define the audience and premise: specify why this group would return and what the show offers beyond existing articles.
  3. Choose formats and distribution: decide whether the show is audio-only or video-capable, how it will reach platforms and how the archive remains accessible.
  4. Budget the full workflow: include reporting, recording, editing, transcripts, clips, captions, promotion and moderation.
  5. Measure the chosen outcome: distinguish downloads, full-episode listening, video views and conversions rather than treating them as equivalent.

The next phase is a multi-format relationship

Audio remains useful for explanation and screen-free listening; video adds discovery and visual presence; transcripts make episodes easier to search and reuse. AI can streamline parts of production, while making distinctive human reporting and transparent standards more important. For technology media, the durable opportunity is not to replace the article with a show. It is to combine reporting, conversation and accessible archives in ways that give audiences more than one meaningful way to understand a complicated story.
