Short answer: Spotify began rolling back its three-song lyrics restriction for Free users in late July 2024. The company said access would be expanded globally, but it never publicly confirmed that the allowance was genuinely unlimited. Contemporary reporting indicated that a much higher, undisclosed monthly threshold could still exist.
What changed
Spotify had been testing limits on lyrics access since September 2023, according to contemporary reports. By May 2024, many Free users were reportedly limited to lyrics for about three songs per month. After that allowance was used, some users saw a prompt encouraging them to subscribe to Premium.

On July 31, 2024, Spotify said it would expand lyrics availability for Free users over the following weeks. The announcement followed widespread complaints about turning a previously broadly available feature into a Premium upsell. Spotify described its product decisions as ongoing testing and iteration rather than explicitly saying backlash caused the reversal.
The company said the expansion would be global, but a staged rollout meant that availability could differ temporarily by country, device, account and app version. The announcement also did not establish that the change was permanent or that every Free account would receive it simultaneously.

Was lyrics access actually unlimited?
No. “No cap” was a headline description, not a confirmed Spotify specification.

Reports said Spotify had removed the visible three-song barrier or raised it dramatically. However, a clarification reported by 9to5Google and summarized by Neowin said a monthly limit still existed, although Spotify did not disclose the number. The reported characterization was that the allowance was “higher than anyone would ever reach.” That makes the most accurate description an expanded but undisclosed allowance, not technically proven unlimited access.
| Question | What the July 2024 evidence supports |
|---|---|
| Could Free users view lyrics? | Spotify said it was expanding access again, subject to rollout and availability. |
| Was the three-song restriction still the stated barrier? | Reports indicate that the highly visible restriction was rolled back or greatly increased. |
| Was there no ceiling at all? | Not established. Spotify did not publish the remaining monthly threshold. |
| Did every user receive the change immediately? | No. Spotify described a rollout over the coming weeks, with availability varying by market and device. |
Why users saw the restriction
Free listeners could initially open lyrics normally. After reaching the reported monthly allowance, some were shown an upgrade message directing them to Premium. The restriction affected a feature that had previously been available to many free listeners, so the change was especially noticeable.

The timing also came during a broader effort to manage Free-to-Premium conversion. Spotify raised U.S. Premium prices in June 2024, listing the new prices as $11.99 per month for Individual, $16.99 for Duo, $19.99 for Family and $5.99 for Student. Those figures describe the June–July 2024 U.S. pricing, not current prices. Spotify’s current U.S. page now displays $12.99 per month for Individual: spotify.com/us/premium. Prices, promotions and eligibility can change.
Spotify also discussed improvements to the Free experience and a possible higher-priced “Deluxe” tier in contemporary earnings-call coverage. None of that proves whether the lyrics restriction generated meaningful paid conversions or why Spotify changed course. The reversal followed backlash, but Spotify did not identify backlash as its sole or official reason.

What Free users should expect
- The lyrics panel may return gradually rather than at the instant of the announcement.
- A particular market, device or account may still behave differently during or after the rollout.
- Some reports described an advertisement or an ad-dismissal step before lyrics appeared. That flow was not documented as universal and could vary by market, platform and rollout stage; see RouteNote’s report.
- A song can lack lyrics even when the account is eligible. Track-level metadata, synchronization, licensing and catalog differences all affect availability.
How to open lyrics in Spotify
- Open Spotify and select a song.
- Start playback and open the Now Playing screen.
- Look for the lyrics panel or swipe upward, depending on the operating system and app version.
- If no lyrics appear, try another song to determine whether the problem is track-specific.
Labels and gestures differ across mobile, desktop, television, car and game-console apps. Spotify cannot provide lyrics for every track, so an absent panel is not automatically evidence of a Free-tier block.

- Update Spotify from your device’s app store.
- Close and restart the app, then sign in again if necessary.
- Test several songs from different artists.
- Try another supported device or platform.
- Check whether the account is Free or Premium and whether it is using the expected regional catalog.
- If lyrics are unavailable across many tracks after these checks, contact Spotify Support. The account may not have received the rollout, may have reached an undisclosed allowance, or may be affected by platform or licensing differences.
Did Premium users lose anything?
The 2024 change primarily concerned Spotify Free. Contemporary coverage reported that Premium users already had unrestricted lyrics access during the relevant period. The expansion therefore did not remove a known lyrics benefit from Premium subscribers.

Premium can still matter for other reasons, including ad-free listening, offline downloads, unrestricted skips, playback-order controls and higher audio-quality options listed by Spotify. The lyrics reversal means that subscribing solely to read ordinary song lyrics was not established as necessary after the expansion.
What this means in 2026
The documented event is a July 2024 policy reversal, not proof that Spotify’s lyrics rules remain unchanged on August 18, 2026. Spotify’s exact Free-tier limit, rollout status and platform behavior can change by country, device, app release and account type. Readers checking the feature today should treat the app’s behavior and current Spotify help pages as more authoritative than a 2024 headline.
Bottom line
Spotify backed away from the harsh three-song lyrics restriction for Free users after a wave of complaints and said access would expand globally. But the company never published evidence of a truly unlimited allowance. The defensible conclusion is that Free users received a much larger, effectively generous limit in the 2024 rollout, while the precise ceiling remained undisclosed.
