Spotify Messages is a mobile-only feature for sharing Spotify content in private one-to-one or group conversations. Free and Premium users aged 16 and over can use it in supported markets, although availability depends on the account, country, device, and rollout. You can send songs, playlists, albums, podcasts, audiobooks, artists, live events, and countdown pages without leaving Spotify.
It is useful for keeping recommendations and reactions together, but it is not a replacement for WhatsApp, Instagram, or another full-purpose messenger. Spotify Messages shares access to Spotify content; it does not send downloadable audio or audiobook files.
What is Spotify Messages?
Spotify Messages adds private conversations to the Spotify mobile app. You can send a Spotify item to a friend, continue with text and emoji reactions, and revisit the recommendation later instead of losing it in another messaging app.
Messages supports:
- One-to-one conversations
- Group conversations
- Spotify content cards and links
- Text replies and emoji reactions
- Message requests for first-time contacts
- Optional Listening Activity
- Remote Jam requests for eligible Premium users
Spotify describes Messages as complementary to sharing through services such as Instagram, WhatsApp, Snapchat, TikTok, and Facebook—not as a replacement for them. See Spotify’s launch announcement for the product overview.

Who can use Spotify Messages?
- You must be at least 16 years old.
- Both Free and Premium users can use Messages where it is available.
- The current Spotify support documentation labels the feature For: Mobile.
- Spotify has launched and expanded Messages in select markets rather than promising universal availability.
- A friend may have Messages even when it has not appeared on your account.
Messages is not a separate paid service or add-on. Do not subscribe to Premium solely to unlock ordinary messaging: Spotify says the core feature is available to Free users in supported markets. Premium matters for other listening benefits and for initiating a remote Request to Jam.
What can you share?
Spotify’s support documentation lists these shareable items:
- Songs
- Playlists
- Albums
- Audiobooks
- Podcast episodes
- Artists
- Live events
- Countdown pages
The recipient receives a Spotify link or content card that opens in Spotify. The feature does not transfer the underlying song, podcast, or audiobook as a file, and access or playback can still depend on the recipient’s account, location, and Spotify plan.

How to send a song, podcast, audiobook, or other Spotify item
From a content page
- Open the Spotify mobile app.
- Open the song, playlist, album, audiobook, podcast episode, artist, live event, or countdown page.
- Tap Share.
- Select one or more suggested friends.
- Tap Send.
Spotify says the sharing flow can select up to 10 people. Depending on the app version, you may be able to add text during the sharing flow or continue the conversation after the item has been sent.
From Now Playing
- Start playing a song, podcast, or audiobook.
- Open the Now Playing screen.
- Tap the share icon.
- Select a friend.
- Tap Send.
If the person is receiving your message for the first time, the item may arrive as a message request rather than as an immediately active conversation.
How to start a new Spotify conversation
- Tap your profile picture.
- Scroll to Messages.
- Tap New message.
- Choose a suggested person, or use an invite link where the option is available.
Spotify says suggestions can be based on previous sharing activity, shared Blends or collaborative playlists, recent Jams, or membership of the same Duo or Family plan. Spotify does not necessarily show every user as a searchable messaging contact.
If the intended person does not appear, send an invite link through another app. After the recipient opens it, Spotify says they may appear in your suggested contacts.

When you message someone for the first time, Spotify sends a message request. The recipient can:
- Accept the request
- Block the sender
- Delete the request
After the request is accepted, participants can exchange text, emoji reactions, and Spotify content. Until then, sending a track does not necessarily create a fully active chat, so a recipient who cannot reply may simply need to accept the request first.

How to create a group chat
Spotify added group messaging on January 28, 2026. The support documentation says group messages can include up to 10 friends. Spotify’s wording distinguishes those friends from the account creating the group, so do not assume the number always means 10 total participants.
Create a group from Messages
- Tap your profile picture.
- Scroll to Messages.
- Tap Create group.
- Select friends from the suggested list.
- Tap Create group again to confirm.
You can also create a group from a content-sharing menu by selecting multiple friends before sending.
Group roles and membership
- The person who creates the group becomes its admin.
- Admins can add or remove members.
- Participants are regular members.
- Pending users have been invited but have not joined.
- Blocked users cannot participate normally.
- A person who leaves or is removed cannot see messages sent while they are away.
Group conversations retain the safety controls available to one-to-one Messages, according to Spotify’s announcement.
Listening Activity: what friends can see
Listening Activity is optional. When enabled, it can show connected Messages contacts what you are currently listening to. If you are not actively listening, Spotify may show your most recently played song instead. That means the display is not always a live presence indicator.
Listening Activity is visible only to people you have already connected with through Messages. You can see another person’s activity without enabling your own.
Turn Listening Activity on or manage it
Open your profile picture, then go to Settings and privacy > Privacy and social. Look for the Listening Activity control. Exact labels can vary with the app version.

Tapping a friend’s activity can let you play the track, save it, open its context menu, or react with one of six standard emojis.
Spotify also added Listening Activity to group messaging. In a group, activity may be shared with that group by default when you join if the feature is enabled; group chat settings provide controls for managing it. You can leave Listening Activity off or disable it for a particular group if you do not want to share your current or recent listening.
How Request to Jam works
Request to Jam turns an existing Messages conversation into a remote shared listening session. Spotify says the remote request is initiated by a Premium user; it is not a feature that every Free account can start.

- Open a Messages conversation with someone you are already connected to.
- A Premium user taps Jam in the upper-right corner.
- Send the request.
- The recipient accepts or declines it.
- If accepted, the recipient becomes the Jam host.
- Both participants can add tracks to the shared queue and listen together.
Participants can see each other’s display names, and Spotify can suggest music using their combined taste profiles. Either person can leave at any time. Invitations expire after a few minutes if they are not answered.

Privacy, reporting, and safety
Spotify provides controls to accept or reject requests, report messages, block users, manage notifications, disable Messages, and control Listening Activity.
Report a message
Press and hold the message, choose Report, and select the reason that applies. Spotify says reported content may be reviewed.
The encryption wording needs care
Spotify’s launch announcement described conversations as protected with encryption in transit and at rest and said proactive detection may scan messages for certain unlawful or harmful content. However, Spotify’s current support page says: “Spotify Messages are private between participants but are not encrypted.”
Because Spotify’s own pages use inconsistent wording, do not describe Messages as end-to-end encrypted or promise the confidentiality associated with an encrypted messenger. Avoid sending sensitive personal information through the feature unless you are comfortable with that limitation.
Block someone
- Open the chat.
- Tap the header containing the person’s name and profile picture.
- Tap the three-dot menu beside the person.
- Choose Block user.
- Tap Block again to confirm.
To manage blocked accounts, go to Settings and privacy > Privacy and social > Blocked users. You can also block someone from their Spotify profile.
Control notifications or turn Messages off
Change Message notifications
- Tap your profile picture.
- Open Settings and privacy.
- Tap Notifications.
- Tap Social features.
- Select Messages.
- Turn notifications on or off.
Labels can vary by operating system or app version, so look under notification or social-feature settings if the wording differs.
Turn Messages off
- Tap your profile picture.
- Tap Settings and privacy.
- Select Privacy and social.
- Scroll to Social features.
- Toggle Messages off.
Delete chats and messages
Delete a chat from your view
- Open the chat.
- Tap the header showing the participant’s name and profile picture.
- Tap the three-dot menu.
- Choose Delete chat.
Spotify says this does not notify the other participant or remove the conversation from their view. The chat can reappear if you message one another again.

Delete an individual message
- For a received message, press and hold it and select Delete for you.
- For a sent message, press and hold it and select Delete.
Spotify also says users can delete their last four sent messages from everyone’s view. The exact wording and availability of this option can vary in the current app interface.
Why Spotify Messages may be missing
If Messages does not appear, the most likely explanation is an eligibility or rollout limitation rather than a fault with your account. Check these possibilities:
- The account holder is under 16.
- The feature is unavailable in the current market.
- You are using Spotify on desktop or the web instead of the mobile app.
- The app needs an update.
- Messages has been disabled in Privacy and social settings.
- Spotify has not enabled the feature for that account yet.
- The intended recipient does not yet qualify as a suggested contact.
Recommended recovery steps
- Update Spotify through your device’s app store.
- Confirm that you are using the mobile app.
- Check Settings and privacy > Privacy and social > Social features > Messages.
- Try sharing a Spotify item through the normal Share menu.
- If a friend is missing from suggestions, send an invite link through another app.
- If the feature is still absent, treat it as a market, account, or staged-rollout limitation rather than assuming the app is broken.
If a friend is not suggested
Spotify says suggestions may be influenced by shared content, a Blend, a collaborative playlist, a recent Jam, or a shared Duo or Family plan. If none applies, send a Spotify link outside Messages and ask the recipient to open it. That may help Spotify surface the person later.
If Request to Jam is unavailable
Check that the initiator has Premium, both people are already connected through Messages, the feature is available for both accounts, and the app is current. Also check whether the invitation expired; Spotify says unanswered requests expire after a few minutes.
If Listening Activity shows the wrong song
The displayed item may be the person’s most recently played song rather than something they are currently playing. Listening Activity should not be treated as guaranteed real-time status.
Is Spotify Messages better than WhatsApp or Instagram?
Spotify Messages is a good fit when both people already use Spotify and the conversation is mainly about music, podcasts, or audiobooks. Its advantage is context: the recommendation, discussion, reactions, and potential Jam can remain together inside Spotify.
A general-purpose messenger is usually better when the group needs voice or video calls, file sharing, broad media support, larger communities, extensive moderation tools, or dependable desktop and web access. WhatsApp, Instagram Direct, Facebook Messenger, Apple Messages, or Discord may be more practical depending on where the participants already communicate.

It is also a poor fit for anyone who requires end-to-end encrypted messaging or does not want selected Spotify contacts to see current or recent listening activity.
Do you need Spotify Premium?
No, not for ordinary Spotify Messages. Spotify says Messages is available to Free and Premium users in supported markets. Premium is mainly relevant if you want Spotify’s other subscription benefits or want to initiate a remote Request to Jam.
Do not treat a Premium subscription as a guarantee that Messages will appear: age, market, mobile availability, account rollout, and feature settings still apply.
