Spotify and Substack announced a podcast-distribution partnership on April 11, 2024, letting participating Substack creators bring free and subscriber-only episodes to Spotify. Paid listeners can link their Substack and Spotify accounts to unlock eligible episodes in Spotify; the deal is a distribution and authentication integration, not an exclusive-content agreement. It arrived shortly after Google Podcasts stopped serving U.S. listeners, but the timing alone does not show that Google’s shutdown caused the partnership.
What the Spotify–Substack partnership does
Under the arrangement, Substack creators can sync eligible podcast feeds to Spotify. Free episodes are available for listening, while subscriber-only episodes appear with a lock and require an eligible paid subscription linked to the listener’s Spotify account. A Spotify listener who is not yet a subscriber can be directed to subscribe through Substack.
Spotify described the integration as part of its Open Access API, a way for subscription platforms and publishers to make member content playable in Spotify. The April 2024 announcement named shows including Rich Text, Split Zone Duo and Culture Study. Spotify said creators could distribute globally, though a particular show must be set up by its publisher and features depend on the supported integration.

Substack remains the subscription layer; Spotify becomes another place to discover and listen. Spotify’s announcement said creators retain control of their content and subscriber relationships, while Spotify still mediates playback, account authentication, discovery and its own listening data.

How paid listening works
If a paid episode is locked in Spotify, Substack’s listener instructions describe this route:
- Open the episode in Spotify and select Get access.
- Choose Link account and sign in to Substack.
- If you are not already a paid subscriber, subscribe to the publication; if you are, continue with the account-linking flow.
- Sign in to Spotify and approve the connection. Return to the show; eligible paid episodes should unlock.
Subscribers can also start in Substack: open the account menu, select Manage Subscription, find the publication’s Private podcast feeds section, choose Listen on Spotify, then link the accounts. The exact screens may vary as apps are updated.
Linking accounts is not the same as pasting a private RSS feed into Spotify. It authenticates your Substack subscription so Spotify can play supported gated episodes. If you cancel, access continues through the end of the period already paid for; when that subscription expires, the paid episodes relock. Substack says linked accounts can be disconnected through Spotify’s content-access page.

How creators sync a Substack podcast
Creators manage distribution from the podcast settings in Substack. Open Distribute your podcast, then the Spotify section. For a show not yet listed, choose Sync to Spotify. If it already has a Spotify listing, provide its existing Spotify URL when prompted so the feed can be associated with the right show. Substack says the sync carries current and future episodes; creators using this integration do not need to submit the RSS feed separately through Spotify for Podcasters.
There are important feed-control limits. Substack says syncing a feed makes all eligible episodes in that feed appear, rather than letting a creator select individual episodes; episodes restricted to founding members are excluded from the general sync. For a publication with separate free and paid feeds, Substack says a banner on the free feed can direct listeners to the paid feed, subject to its requirements. Creators should review how their feeds and access tiers are configured before syncing.
If a listener cannot find the Spotify option or the show, the publication may not have synced its podcast. Substack’s support page says subscribers can use the publication’s private RSS feed with another compatible podcast app instead.
Why Google Podcasts is part of the story
Google Podcasts listening ended in the United States on April 2, 2024. Google’s transition guidance said the service would remain available in other regions until June 24, 2024, and that Google Podcasts Manager would close on July 29, 2024. Google directed listeners toward YouTube Music or export options, rather than Spotify specifically. Its migration guidance also noted that some shows might not be available in YouTube Music and could instead be saved using an RSS link.

That made the Spotify–Substack announcement relevant to listeners reconsidering where to hear podcasts, but it should not be mistaken for a direct replacement or a migration program. Google Podcasts users were not automatically moved to Spotify, and the partnership announcement does not say Google’s decision prompted it. The launch followed the U.S. shutdown by nine days; that establishes chronology, not causation.
What creators gain—and what they trade
Spotify can give a Substack show another discovery surface and let an existing Spotify user listen to free and paid episodes without switching apps. A free listener can encounter a clear route to a paid subscription, while the creator continues to manage that subscription through Substack. For creators whose audience already listens on Spotify, reducing the friction of finding and playing a paid show may be valuable.
But adding Spotify also adds another platform dependency. Subscribers must connect accounts, and creators may need to help troubleshoot authorization or show-sync issues. Feed-level syncing can constrain episode-by-episode access choices, and analytics are not necessarily consolidated: Substack says creators can claim a show through Spotify for Creators to see Spotify listener data such as streams, unique listeners, play time and demographics. Its support material has also described adding Spotify listening to Substack’s own podcast statistics as a future intention; that should not be treated as a confirmed current feature.

The practical choice depends on priorities. Spotify is attractive when convenience, discovery and an existing Spotify audience matter most. Private RSS remains useful when portability and use of a dedicated podcast app matter more. Neither path removes the creator’s need to maintain the subscription relationship and communicate clearly with listeners.

What this says about Spotify’s podcast strategy
The partnership is more notable as distribution infrastructure than as content acquisition. Spotify gains more independent and subscription-funded podcast inventory without signing every show to an exclusive deal. Substack brings creator-led programming into a mainstream audio app while keeping paid membership tied to its own service. Open Access also fits Spotify’s broader effort to make the app a destination for more than Spotify-owned or exclusive content; the 2024 announcement listed other partners, including Patreon, Supercast, Supporting Cast, The Economist, Freakonomics Radio, Bankless, Dateline NBC and The Wall Street Journal.
Spotify cited 602 million monthly active users in its April 2024 announcement. That is a historical figure from the time of the announcement, not a current audience statistic. The useful strategic point is that Spotify offered partners access to its listening environment, not that the old figure measures the platform today. Spotify later announced broader creator tools under Spotify for Creators in November 2024; that development provides context for its creator-platform ambitions, but was not part of the Substack deal itself.

Alternatives for listeners
- YouTube Music: Google’s official destination for Google Podcasts migration. It suits listeners already using YouTube, but Google acknowledged that some podcasts might not be available there.
- Apple Podcasts, Overcast or Pocket Casts: Dedicated podcast apps that can handle private Substack feeds. Substack documents adding a private feed to Apple Podcasts through Library → three-dot menu → Add a Show by URL, and also provides instructions for Overcast and Pocket Casts.
- Private RSS: Copy the unique feed URL from Substack and add it to a compatible podcast app. This is less streamlined than account linking, but avoids making Spotify the required playback interface for paid episodes.
Choose Spotify if you want a familiar all-in-one listening app and the publication supports the integration. Choose an RSS-compatible app if portability, feed control or a dedicated podcast experience is more important. Google Podcasts’ closure did not leave one universal successor: YouTube Music, Spotify and RSS-based apps differ in discovery, paid access and control.
