Spotify Audiobook Recaps: How the iOS Feature Works and Where It’s Available Now

Spotify’s Recap button offers a progress-based audiobook refresher, but title and account availability remain limited. Here’s how it works on iOS and Android, plus what to know about plans, AI, and spoilers.

Spotify introduced Audiobook Recaps as an iOS beta on November 13, 2025, for a limited selection of English-language titles. The feature creates a short audio refresher intended to bring you back up to your latest listening point. Spotify later announced Android availability on April 15, 2026, so Recaps are no longer iPhone-only—but they still aren’t available for every book or account.

What Spotify Audiobook Recaps do

A Recap is a short, automatically generated audio summary of the part of an audiobook you have already heard. It is meant to help you return to a story after a break without replaying several chapters. Spotify describes it as tailored to your most recent listening point, rather than a summary of the entire book.

That progress-based design is intended to avoid revealing later events. It is not a guarantee against spoilers: a recap can only be as useful as the progress information Spotify has recorded, and an automated summary may omit or misstate details. Treat it as a refresher, not an authoritative account of the book.

Spotify first announced the beta on November 13, 2025. Its author-facing explanation says the initial rollout covered selected English-language titles and that eligibility did not mean every eligible title would receive Recaps: Spotify for Authors: Introducing Recaps for Audiobooks.

How to start a Recap

  1. Open the Spotify mobile app and open the audiobook you have been listening to.
  2. Look for the Recap button on the audiobook page. Spotify’s public instructions do not establish one universal menu path or button placement for every app release.
  3. Tap Recap to hear the summary of your progress.
  4. Return to the audiobook and continue listening from your recorded position.

If the button is absent, that alone does not mean the app is broken. Spotify has not documented a universal setting that turns Recaps on for all titles.

Is Recap still iOS-only?

No. iOS was the platform for the initial beta, but Spotify announced on April 15, 2026 that Recaps were also available on Android. Availability can still differ by book, language, market, and rollout, so support on a platform does not mean every listener will see the feature.

Why the Recap button may not appear

Spotify’s documented starting point was a limited selection of English-language titles, and it does not promise Recaps for every eligible book. If the button is missing, consider these possibilities:

  • The title is not included. Spotify’s rollout is selective; audiobook availability does not guarantee a Recap.
  • The title or account is outside the available rollout. Country, language, or account eligibility may affect what appears. Spotify has not published a universal availability map for Recaps.
  • Your listening position is unclear or too early. Spotify has not published a minimum-progress rule, but a recap may not be useful until the app has a meaningful recorded position.
  • Your position has not synced yet. Spotify says audiobook listening-time tracking can be delayed if you pause mid-chapter or stay offline for an extended period. Check the player’s progress and chapter list before relying on a recap.

These latter cases are practical checks, not published universal eligibility rules. If the title is supported and the button remains missing, Spotify’s public materials do not specify a separate Recap troubleshooting or request workflow.

Does Recap require Premium?

There is no universal Premium-only or universally free rule established for Recaps. The feature’s availability depends on title and rollout; access to the audiobook itself depends on your market, plan, and whether you have unlocked the title. Spotify’s US audiobook access options are described on its Premium audiobook plans, Audiobooks Access, and audiobook unlocking support pages.

For the United States, Spotify says eligible Premium Individual subscribers receive 15 hours per month from the audiobook subscriber catalog. Duo and Family audiobook hours are for the plan manager; Premium Student does not include the audiobook listening-time benefit. Audiobooks Access is a US-only option with 15 monthly hours from the subscriber catalog, while music and podcasts remain ad-supported. Separately unlocked titles can be purchased through Spotify’s web player and played in the app.

The monthly allocation is based on an audiobook’s normal runtime, not the speed you choose: a five-hour title listened to at 2× speed still uses five hours of the allowance. Included hours expire at the end of the monthly period. Spotify also offers Audiobooks+ for additional monthly hours and one-time top-ups valid for 12 months; see its listening-time purchase details. These US plan rules should not be assumed to apply in other countries.

What Spotify says about AI and narrator voices

Spotify says Recaps use AI technology to create summaries. The company also says audiobook content is not used to train large language models, that Recaps do not use voice generation, and that they do not replicate the original narrator’s performance. Those are Spotify’s stated safeguards, not an independent audit of the system.

In practical terms, AI summarization is distinct from cloning a narrator’s voice or generating a replacement performance. Spotify presents Recaps as a companion to the audiobook, not a substitute for its narration. As with any automated summary, the result may leave out context or get a detail wrong.

What to do if a Recap seems wrong or spoilery

  • Stop playback if the recap appears to describe events beyond the point you remember.
  • Check the audiobook player’s progress marker and chapter list, especially if you skipped ahead, rewound, listened offline, or switched devices.
  • Return to the last chapter you clearly remember and resume from there if needed.
  • Do not treat the Recap as a definitive correction of your memory or a replacement for the book.

Spotify’s public announcement does not describe a dedicated way to edit a Recap, report an inaccurate one, or request a regeneration.

How Recaps fit into Spotify’s audiobook offering

Recaps address one friction point—remembering where a story left off—within a broader service that combines audiobooks with music and podcasts. Spotify has also introduced Page Match, which helps connect progress between a print or ebook edition and its audiobook; Page Match is not a summary feature. Spotify’s Page Match guide explains that separate feature.

Spotify said in April 2026 that Audiobooks in Premium had expanded to 22 markets and its catalog exceeded 700,000 titles. Those are company-reported figures from that date, not a guarantee that a particular title is available in your market. The company’s May 2026 audiobook update discusses its wider audiobook strategy.

The right service depends more on how you access books than on Recaps alone. Spotify can suit existing subscribers who want music, podcasts, and occasional audiobook listening in one app, subject to its title access and monthly-hour rules. Readers who want to buy individual books can compare Spotify unlocks with Apple Books or Libro.fm. For library borrowing, availability depends on a participating library’s catalog, queues, and loan terms; see Libby. Audible is another dedicated audiobook service, with plan and title terms to check directly.
