The feature is for Premium users, remains in beta, and first added requests on May 13, 2025; Spotify has since expanded its controls, languages, and availability.
What Spotify’s DJ requests do
Spotify first announced voice requests for DJ on May 13, 2025, initially for Premium listeners in more than 60 markets where DJ was available. Requests could combine a genre, mood, artist, or activity. Since then, Spotify has added text requests and personalized suggestions alongside voice input. Spotify’s announcement describes requests as a way to refresh a personalized session.
DJ is the current product name; “AI DJ” is common shorthand. It presents selected Spotify music with spoken commentary, drawing on personalization and Spotify’s editorial expertise. Spotify has not publicly detailed every technical component in the announcements cited here, and DJ should not be confused with AI-generated music.
How to make a request
- Open the Spotify mobile app and look for the DJ card or button on Home. If it is not there, open Search and search for “DJ.”
- Start the DJ session.
- In the Now Playing interface, tap the DJ button.
- Type a request, tap the microphone to speak, or choose a suggested personalized request.
- Let DJ update the session. Tap the DJ control again whenever you want to change its direction.

What to ask for
Spotify describes DJ requests in terms of combinations such as genre, mood, artist, and activity. Discovery requests can also ask for unfamiliar music, new releases, or older favorites. Examples published by Spotify include:
- “Surprise me with some indie tracks I’ve never heard before.”
- “Give me some electronic beats for a midday run.”
- “Play me some cry-in-the-car songs.”
- “Upbeat hits for a workout.”
- “Tracks like my top songs from 2025.”
- “Start a session with new releases for my Sunday.”
For a more useful result, combine a purpose with a mood or style, then refine the session with a follow-up such as “more upbeat” or “less familiar.” Spotify describes DJ as updating a personalized mix. Its documentation does not promise that an exact-song request will make that track play immediately, so use ordinary Spotify search or playback controls when you need a particular song.

Who can use DJ, and where
Spotify Support lists DJ as a Premium feature. Spotify said it was available in more than 75 markets as of May 7, 2026; that is not worldwide availability, and access can depend on the account’s market and rollout. Spotify originally launched DJ for Premium users in the United States and Canada in 2023. Check Home or Search in your own account rather than assuming that a subscription guarantees access in every country. Spotify’s May 2026 expansion announcement says to keep the app updated, but does not specify a universal minimum app version.
Languages and changing DJ’s voice
Spotify’s May 2026 announcement added French, German, Italian, and Brazilian Portuguese DJ options, named Maïa, Ben, Alex, and Dani respectively. Spotify Support also lists English DJ X and Spanish Mexico DJ Livi, while noting that DJ is available in a limited number of languages. The options shown can vary by account and market.

- Select DJ language.
- Choose an available language and persona.
DJ requests versus Spotify’s conversational beta
Requests let listeners redirect the music in a DJ session. Spotify’s April 2026 announcement described a related but broader conversational DJ beta, which can handle some music questions and recommendations. Spotify said that experience began rolling out in English to Premium users aged 18 and older in the United States, Ireland, and Sweden. It is a separate expansion, not evidence that every DJ user has access to a general-purpose music chatbot; Spotify cautions that conversational answers may be incomplete or inaccurate. If DJ or its request controls are missing
DJ does not appear
- Update Spotify, then check both Home and Search for “DJ.”
- Confirm that the account is Premium.
- Consider whether DJ has rolled out in the account’s country; Premium alone does not establish regional availability.
- If those checks do not help, signing out and back in or reinstalling the app are general troubleshooting steps, not fixes Spotify specifically documents for DJ.
The microphone or text option is missing
Try whichever input is available and confirm that the request controls have reached the account. Update the app and check Spotify’s microphone permission in the device settings if voice input is unavailable. Language and feature availability can vary by market.

A request produces the wrong feel
Make the request more specific by adding an activity, mood, genre, era, or discovery preference. If the first result misses, tap DJ again and restate the direction—for example, ask for something less familiar or more energetic. DJ is designed to steer a personalized session, not to guarantee a precise track sequence.

DJ may suit Spotify listeners who want hands-free discovery, a radio-like session, or an easy way to change musical direction while exercising, cooking, commuting, or hosting. Text input is useful when speaking is inconvenient. The trade-off is that recommendations reflect Spotify’s personalization, the session includes spoken commentary, and the beta can change. Someone who mainly wants exact-song playback or uninterrupted music may prefer Spotify’s standard search, playlists, or queue controls instead.

Spotify Premium is the direct subscription associated with DJ; check the Premium page for locally available plans and pricing. Spotify announced a U.S. Premium price update in January 2026 but did not give a single current U.S. price table in that announcement. DJ alone may not justify subscribing if it is unavailable in your market or if a curated session is not what you want.
