Sofia Falcone’s defining comic-book story is Batman: Dark Victory, Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale’s 1998 sequel to Batman: The Long Halloween. In it, she is Carmine Falcone’s daughter and emerges as a new Gotham crime boss while the Hangman serial killer targets police. HBO’s The Penguin reworks Gotham’s crime-family material rather than directly adapting that story. “Femme fatale” is a useful interpretive lens for Sofia, not an official DC classification established by the available sources.
Who is Sofia Falcone in the comics?
Sofia is the daughter of Carmine “The Roman” Falcone, the powerful Gotham crime figure at the center of the Falcone family’s story. DC identifies her as a new crime boss in Batman: Dark Victory, making that sequel the essential comic for understanding her place in Gotham’s underworld.
Her role is tied to the wider struggle among Gotham’s crime families and the city’s changing balance of power. The Hangman’s attacks on police are part of the same story, not a separate Sofia publication or origin. The available official material establishes these broad connections, but does not provide a definitive full list of Sofia’s comic appearances.
Where does Sofia’s story begin?
Batman: The Long Halloween sets up Gotham’s crime families
Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale’s Batman: The Long Halloween, published in 1996, centers on a year-long mystery amid Gotham’s crime families. It provides the immediate setting for the sequel and the Falcone family’s prominence. DC’s saga guide describes it as the start of the Loeb and Sale sequence; it is important context, but Dark Victory is the central Sofia reference.

Batman: Dark Victory introduces Sofia as a crime boss
Published in 1998, Batman: Dark Victory is a fourteen-issue sequel to The Long Halloween. Its new serial killer, the Hangman, targets police, while Sofia emerges as a crime boss in the Falcone family’s world. Readers looking specifically for Sofia’s core comic story should start here.
Companion stories extend the saga
DC’s guide places Catwoman: When in Rome (2004), a six-issue story following Selina Kyle away from Gotham, between events in Dark Victory. It adds context to the broader saga, but DC does not present it as a Sofia-centered book. The guide also includes Batman: The Long Halloween Special (2021) and Batman: The Last Halloween (2024, described as ongoing in the guide published in October 2025). Neither displaces Dark Victory as the key Sofia story. DC’s saga guide discusses the sequence and its context.

How does The Penguin differ from the comics?
DC’s September 2024 overview describes Sofia’s television story as beginning after Carmine’s death. She complicates Oz’s position and clashes with him. The series is a new take on both characters, not a straight adaptation of Loeb and Sale’s comics; treat it as a reinterpretation drawing on Gotham’s crime-family material, not a scene-by-scene version of Dark Victory. DC’s overview of The Penguin provides that adaptation framing.
For context, DC’s character page identifies the Penguin as Oswald Chesterfield Cobblepot and gives his first appearance as Detective Comics #58 (1941). That is background about the character, not a Sofia publication-history fact. DC’s Penguin character page has the details.

Is Sofia Falcone officially a “femme fatale”?
“Femme fatale” describes the article’s interpretive angle; it is not an official DC label established for Sofia by the cited material. DC does call Catwoman one of Batman’s iconic femme fatales, but that characterization does not automatically apply to Sofia. Her documented comic role is more specific: Falcone daughter, crime-family figure and emerging crime boss in Dark Victory. DC’s discussion of Catwoman and When in Rome supports the comparison, not an official classification of Sofia.
What to watch for when comparing comic and television Sofia
- Family and power: Compare how each version places Sofia within the Falcone family and Gotham’s struggle for control.
- The Hangman storyline: The Hangman’s police-targeting murders are part of Dark Victory. Do not assume the series reproduces that plot or assigns identities in the same way.
- Her relationship with Oz: The television overview emphasizes conflict with Oz after Carmine’s death; that framing should not be treated as a one-to-one match with the comics.
- Tone and adaptation: Read the series as its own crime-drama interpretation of Gotham material, rather than as a direct transcription of Loeb and Sale’s plot.
Where to read Sofia’s key comic
Start with Batman: Dark Victory; read The Long Halloween first for the crime-family setup. DC says the saga can be found through local comic shops or DC Universe Infinite. Formats and catalog availability can change, so check the current listing before choosing a collected edition or digital option. DC’s saga guide identifies the reading context.
