The show referenced his departure and his later “Get me to God’s country” caption, but neither the jokes nor the reporting established why he left.
What happened when Morgan Wallen left SNL?
Wallen was the musical guest on the March 29, 2025 episode, hosted by Mikey Madison. After performing “I’m The Problem” and “Just in Case,” he left during the goodnights as the closing credits began. A report by TVLine included a clip of the exit and noted that Wallen later posted an airplane photo captioned “Get me to God’s country.” (TVLine)
The available reporting describes the sequence, not Wallen’s reason for leaving. The caption is not confirmation of his motive. Kenan Thompson later told Entertainment Weekly, as quoted by TV Insider, that he saw Wallen leave and that it “just felt so abrupt”; Thompson did not say he knew why. (TV Insider)
How did SNL reference the walk-off on April 5?
The April 5 episode brought up the exit twice, in two different segments. The cold open drew on Wallen’s caption; Weekend Update turned his departure into a punchline. (TV Insider; TheWrap)

The cold open: “God’s country” and the tariffs joke
In the cold open, James Austin Johnson’s Donald Trump character echoed Wallen’s phrase while discussing tariffs on Heard and McDonald Islands. Johnson was reported to say: “Get me to God’s country, right? Remember that? Wow.” The callback made the caption part of the episode’s political satire; it did not explain Wallen’s departure.
Weekend Update: Jost’s goodnights punchline
During Weekend Update, Colin Jost joked: “Money is leaving the stock market faster than Morgan Wallen at goodnights.” The line used the walk-off as a comparison in a joke about the market. Any dollar-loss figure included in its setup was part of the reported comedic dialogue, not an independently verified statistic.

What the reports do—and don’t—establish
- Established: Wallen left as the goodnights began after his two performances on March 29, and SNL referenced the incident twice on April 5.
- Not established: Why Wallen left. The airplane caption and Thompson’s observation do not supply a confirmed explanation.
- Keep the joke in context: Jost’s stock-market comparison was a punchline, not evidence for a factual claim about market losses.
