Smashing was a real standalone app, and it shut down at noon Eastern Time on April 16, 2025. Otis Chandler, a Goodreads co-founder, told customers that the company had not grown quickly enough to become sustainable. The closure was not reported as a Goodreads rebrand, an Amazon acquisition, a security incident, or a temporary outage.
What Smashing was
Smashing was a content-discovery service for the wider web—not a Goodreads feature or a book-tracking extension. It aimed to help people find worthwhile news articles, blog posts, social-media posts, podcasts, and other URL-based content through a combination of artificial intelligence and human recommendations.
Its premise echoed the community model behind Goodreads: people could help one another discover material, while the system used those signals to personalize each reader’s experience. Chandler described the goal as finding better things to read and spend time with, rather than simply maximizing clicks or popularity.

Goodreads’ account of its founders and the founders’ 2019 letter provide the background to Chandler’s connection with the book platform.
How the app worked
Smashing combined several layers of curation:
- Readers followed feeds based on their interests.
- Users submitted links and voted on content.
- The app used AI to surface and personalize recommendations.
- Readers could like, save, and comment on articles.
- Community signals helped tune future recommendations.
- AI-generated summaries and excerpts gave readers a quick way to understand a link.
- “Story Overview” pages grouped material about the same story or subject.
- The AI Questions feature could answer questions about content, simplify a story, show different perspectives, build timelines, or produce other interpretations.
Early product coverage reported a limit of 30 “Worthwhile” votes per day, a design choice that encouraged users to reserve their strongest endorsements for material they considered genuinely valuable. The initial public product centered on an iOS app, with a web version in development.
Chandler also said Smashing was intended to send readers to publishers rather than replace the original material. That created a built-in tension: summaries and story overviews made discovery easier, but the more information readers received inside the app, the less necessary it might feel to open every source page. That is a structural challenge for this kind of product, not evidence that Smashing actually harmed publishers.

Why did Smashing shut down?
The company’s stated explanation was straightforward: it “didn’t grow fast enough” to scale into a sustainable product. Chandler’s message said the team had seen engaged readers and a small but passionate community, but not enough growth to support the business.

That explanation should not be inflated into claims that Smashing had no users, that its AI failed, or that it ran out of money. The available reporting does not establish those conclusions. It also does not provide verified figures for revenue, paying users, runway, or the company’s final cash position.
Several product and business pressures help explain why this category is difficult, although they are analysis rather than confirmed causes of the shutdown:

A service needs active curators to produce strong recommendations, but new users may not return until the community is already large and useful.
- AI does not remove the cold start. Personalization still depends on enough content, behavioral data, and community feedback to make feeds feel relevant.
- “Worthwhile” is difficult to monetize. A product designed around time well spent may be attractive to readers without aligning neatly with advertising models based on clicks, impressions, or endless engagement.
- Broad scope creates complexity. Smashing attempted to cover articles, blogs, podcasts, social posts, recommendations, summaries, multiple viewpoints, and conversational tools in one experience.
The most defensible conclusion is narrower than “the idea failed”: Smashing may have demonstrated a real desire for better content discovery without demonstrating a sustainable consumer business at the scale it needed.
The team and funding
At closure, the company told customers it had seven employees. Launch coverage reported that Smashing had raised $3.4 million in seed funding. Investors named in coverage included True Ventures, Blockchange, Offline Ventures, Advancit Capital, and Power of N Ventures, along with angel investors.
The funding figure is reported capital raised, not proof of how much money remained when the service closed. No reliable source in the available reporting establishes the company’s final runway, revenue, or user-growth curve.

What happened to user data?
Chandler’s shutdown letter said users could request an export by emailing the company before the shutdown. It specifically mentioned data such as articles they had read or upvoted.
That is more limited than a confirmed promise of a complete account archive. The available notice does not establish:
- the export format;
- whether every request was fulfilled;
- how saved items, comments, or other activity were handled;
- the retention period for account information; or
- the company’s final deletion policy.
There is also no reported evidence that Smashing data transferred automatically to Goodreads. Former users should not assume that their reading history, votes, or saved material migrated to Goodreads or another service. The export instruction came through the company’s shutdown communication, and the service was scheduled to close on April 16, 2025.

Was Smashing part of Goodreads or Amazon?
No announced corporate connection has been established. Smashing was Chandler’s separate startup, inspired in part by what he learned about community-driven discovery at Goodreads. Goodreads is owned by Amazon, but the available reporting does not say that Amazon owned, funded, operated, or acquired Smashing.

The accurate description is therefore “a separate content-discovery startup founded by Goodreads co-founder Otis Chandler,” not “Goodreads’ reading app” or “Amazon’s AI reader.”

No replacement reproduces Smashing’s exact combination of community voting, AI recommendations, summaries, and a Goodreads-like reputation model. The practical choice depends on which part of Smashing you miss.
For controlled feeds and broad web monitoring: Inoreader
Inoreader is a stronger fit for readers who want to choose their sources and organize them into feeds. It supports websites, newsletters, podcasts, YouTube, social feeds, and monitoring feeds, with more explicit control over folders, filters, and aggregation than Smashing offered.
It is a poor substitute if what you wanted was an opinionated community deciding which links were “Worthwhile.” Its official pricing page displayed a free plan and, when checked in August 2026, a Pro tier listed at $7.50 per month billed annually or $9.99 billed monthly. Prices and plan details can change.

It is not a community-curated discovery network, so it will not recreate Smashing’s social voting layer. It is better suited to readers who already find links elsewhere and want to build a durable personal library. Readwise’s official pricing page displayed $9.99 per month billed annually or $12.99 billed monthly, with a 30-day free trial, when checked in August 2026.
Other discovery products
TechCrunch’s shutdown coverage named Bulletin, Particle, Feeeed, Tapestry, and Reeder among possible alternatives. Their current availability, features, and pricing were not established by the sources used here, so they should not be presented as confirmed like-for-like replacements.
The larger lesson
Smashing’s shutdown separates two questions that are often confused: Was the product useful? and Could the company grow into a sustainable business? Chandler’s account suggests that Smashing found engaged readers and a passionate community, but not enough scale.
That distinction matters beyond this one app. Better content discovery requires a difficult balance: enough human participation to create trust, enough data for personalization, enough breadth to remain useful, and a business model that does not undermine the goal of helping people spend their attention well. Smashing attempted to combine all of those elements, but it stopped operating before the model became sustainable.
