It is a free, advertising-supported streaming television service with live channels and on-demand programming—not a free version of every paid Sling package. Sling now advertises more than 600 free live channels and more than 40,000 on-demand shows and movies, although the lineup changes over time.
You can start watching at watch.sling.com or in the Sling app by choosing “Stream Free”. Sling says no subscription or credit card is required.
What Sling Freestream is
Freestream is Sling’s FAST (free ad-supported streaming television) service. Advertising funds the programming, so viewers pay with commercial viewing rather than a monthly subscription. The service combines linear channels—scheduled feeds that work like television channels—with on-demand movies and shows.
Sling introduced Freestream as a way to watch free programming inside the Sling ecosystem and as a path toward its paid television plans. At launch, Sling reported more than 210 free channels and more than 41,000 on-demand titles. Those were February 2023 figures, not a permanent description of the service.

In a later 2023 update, Sling said the service had grown beyond 335 channels and added 12 exclusive channels. Its current consumer page advertises more than 600 free live channels and more than 40,000 on-demand shows and movies. Channel totals include curated, thematic and niche digital feeds, not 600 conventional cable networks.

Is Sling Freestream really free?
Yes, the Freestream tier has no monthly subscription charge and Sling’s help documentation says you do not need a credit card to begin. It is supported by advertising, requires an internet connection and may require a compatible device or app.

“Free” does not include the complete programming of Sling Orange, Sling Blue, Sling Select, premium add-ons or every local broadcast station. A free channel may also be available only in a particular market or on a particular device. Licensing and channel partnerships can change the catalog.

How to watch Freestream
- Open watch.sling.com in a supported browser, or install/open the Sling app on a compatible television, phone, tablet or streaming device.
- Choose “Stream Free” rather than a paid-plan signup option.
- Start viewing without entering payment information.
- Create a free Sling account only if you want features such as favorites, profiles and more personalized recommendations.
Sling says Freestream works across more than 20 device types, but the exact compatibility list can change. The original February 2023 rollout named Roku, Comcast, LG, Samsung, Vizio and Xbox devices; that historical list is not a current guarantee. A live channel’s schedule is not the same as an on-demand library: having a series on a linear feed does not mean every episode is available to watch whenever you want. Use Sling’s current guide to verify a specific title or channel before relying on it.

Freestream is useful for sampling Sling’s interface and guide, but it does not unlock paid networks automatically. If you upgrade, compare the channels you actually need and current terms on Sling’s service page; prices, passes and packages are subject to change.
Does Freestream include local channels?
Not universally. ABC, CBS, NBC and FOX availability is market- and device-dependent, and should not be assumed from the national Freestream channel count. If local broadcast television is essential, check your ZIP-code-specific options and consider an over-the-air antenna. Sling’s service information also distinguishes free streaming channels from local channels received through an antenna; recording rules can differ.

Freestream is therefore not a guaranteed replacement for an antenna, a local-TV subscription or a paid cable-replacement bundle.

Good fit
- You want free live channels and on-demand entertainment.
- You accept commercial breaks.
- You want to try Sling before paying.
- You prefer general entertainment, news, movies or niche channels over a full cable lineup.
- You already use the Sling app and do not want another streaming service.
Poor fit
- You need comprehensive local channels.
- You expect ESPN, regional sports networks, premium movie networks or every paid-Sling channel.
- You require ad-free viewing.
- You want a DVR for every free channel.
- You prefer only on-demand viewing with no scheduled linear channels.

The right choice depends on viewing style: Freestream emphasizes Sling integration and an upgrade path, Pluto emphasizes live-channel browsing, Tubi is especially on-demand-oriented, and Xumo Play is closely tied to compatible hardware.
Common problems and fixes
Freestream is hard to find
- Update the Sling app.
- Look for “Stream Free” instead of a separate Freestream app.
- Try watch.sling.com in a browser.
- Confirm that your device is supported.
- Restart the app or sign out and back in if it opens only to a paid-plan screen.
- Check whether the device or content is restricted by location.
A channel you expect is missing
Search Sling’s current guide rather than relying on launch-era lists. Channel rights, regional feeds and device availability can change.
The app asks for an account
An account request is not the same as a payment request. Sling distinguishes watch access from account features such as favorites and profiles; Freestream is not converted into a paid subscription merely by creating a free account.
Bottom line
Sling Freestream is a legitimate $0, ad-supported service launched on February 9, 2023. It now offers hundreds of free live feeds and more than 40,000 advertised on-demand titles, but counts and availability change. Treat it as a FAST service and an entry point to Sling—not as a complete free replacement for paid Sling, cable, premium sports or universally available local television.
