Verdict for UK buyers in 2026: Sky Glass Gen 1 remains a clever all-in-one television, but it is no longer a sensible new purchase at anything close to its original price. Its integrated Sky interface, unusually capable built-in speakers and dish-free installation are genuinely convenient. However, the 60Hz LCD picture, broadband dependence, Playlist limitations, subscription costs and lack of modern gaming features make it a poor alternative to a good current TV. Consider a used Gen 1 only at a substantial discount, after checking its activation and condition.
What Sky Glass Gen 1 is
Launched in 2021, Sky Glass Gen 1 combines a television, Sky OS, streaming access, voice control and a soundbar-style speaker system in one chassis. It receives Sky over broadband rather than through a satellite dish and does not require a separate Sky Q box. HDMI inputs accept consoles and other equipment, while Sky’s interface brings supported channels and streaming services into one search and recommendation system.
That is a different proposition from a normal smart TV. A conventional set offers apps; Glass is designed around a Sky subscription, Sky channels and the Playlist system. Sky describes the appeal as one remote, one interface and no additional box. Its comparison with separate streaming devices is explained at Sky’s official guide.
The original Stuff review was published on 12 November 2021. Gen 1 was subsequently superseded by Sky Glass Gen 2 on 12 February 2025, so launch reviews should not be mistaken for current buying advice.
#1 Best Overall
- 【2500 NITS ULTRA-BRIGHT FOR OUTDOOR】 While standard outdoor TVs offer only 1000 nits (limited to partial shade), RIXZSIW features a massive 2500 nits high-brightness panel. It is 6-8 times brighter than indoor TVs, delivering crystal-clear 4K UHD visuals and vibrant colors .
- 【IP55 ALL-WEATHER PROTECTION】 Engineered with a robust full-metal casing, this weatherproof television is rated IP55 to resist rain, snow, dust, and even sandstorms. Unlike plastic-frame competitors, our durable build operates reliably in extreme temperatures ranging from 14°F to 113°F (-10°C to 45°C) for year-round backyard entertainment.
- 【SIDE-FACING WATERPROOF HDMI PORT】 Solving a major industry pain point: our specialized side-facing HDMI port allows for easy installation of TV sticks (like Fire Stick or Roku). | Colours | Ocean Blue, Dusky Pink, Racing Green, Ceramic White and Anthracite Black |
These are Gen 1 specifications from Expert Reviews and Stuff. Do not transfer Gen 2’s seven-speaker, 250W system to this model: Sky says Gen 2 increased audio power from 215W to 250W and added a seventh speaker (Sky’s comparison).
Design, setup and everyday convenience
The thick chassis houses forward-facing and upward-firing drivers, giving Gen 1 the appearance of a television with a soundbar built into its lower section. It is substantially deeper and heavier than many current slim TVs. Allow room for the stand, check wall strength and plan cable routing; Sky’s current terms say wall mounting requires professional installation (current product terms).
Setup is straightforward when broadband, a Sky ID and the remote are available. The trade-off for removing the satellite dish and Sky box is that the television becomes dependent on broadband, account status and Sky’s software. A fast advertised package does not guarantee a reliable stream if Wi‑Fi coverage is poor or the household is using the connection heavily.
Picture quality: lively HDR, but not a class leader
With suitable 4K HDR material, the Quantum Dot LCD panel produces a sharp, colourful image. Local dimming gives it more contrast than a basic edge-lit LCD, and both Stuff and Expert Reviews regarded HDR as a strength.
There are important limits. Much Sky programming remains HD, so a 4K panel cannot create detail that is not in the source. Gen 1 is still an LCD rather than an OLED, and its black levels and viewing angles should not be expected to match a good OLED or newer Mini-LED television. HDR and UHD availability also depend on the programme and the customer’s Sky package. The cited reviews support this qualitative assessment, not a specific brightness, contrast, colour-accuracy or input-lag measurement.

- IT HOLDS YOUR TRACKER, AND IT GLOWS: The cavity inside is molded to fit an AirTag or a Tile Mate, with a sound channel that points the chime outward. The case also charges in light and glows once the room is dark. Tracker not included.
- IT STANDS UP: Set it on its end and the remote stands upright on the side table, where you can see it. The GripStand base is part of the same molding. Patent pending.
- IT IS SHAPED TO BE HELD: The silicone body is enlarged and textured all over, so your fingers and palm have something to hold. That shape is the grip half of GripStand, and the reason the case is the size it is. Non-toxic, hypoallergenic, and it resists stretching and wear.
- IT FITS ONE REMOTE ONLY: Made for the Siri Remote with the round clickpad, the one that works with Apple TV 4K (2nd and 3rd generation) and Apple TV HD, 2021 onward. It does not fit the older aluminum remote with the glass touch surface.
- COVERED FOR TWO YEARS: Designed in Los Angeles and backed by a two-year warranty, and a lanyard is included so the remote is easy to carry and harder to lose. 73&Sunny makes remote cases; this is the one for the Siri Remote.
Sound is the strongest hardware argument
For a television, Gen 1’s integrated audio is unusually ambitious. The six-speaker, Dolby Atmos-capable 3.1.2 arrangement is clearer, fuller and more cinematic than typical thin-TV speakers. That makes it attractive to someone who wants better sound without another box, subwoofer or cable.
It is not automatically a replacement for a quality dedicated soundbar, AV receiver or surround system. Owners of good external audio may gain little from paying for the built-in system. Sky’s current pricing lists an Ultra HD and Dolby Atmos Pack as a separate £6-per-month add-on, so Atmos capability in the hardware does not mean every customer receives Atmos content automatically (Sky pricing and terms).
Sky OS, voice search and Playlist
Sky OS is the product’s central idea. Sky channels, recommendations and selected services appear together; cross-service search reduces the need to open several apps; and “Hello Sky” can search or control playback. Stuff praised the interface and Playlist concept, although it found voice search imperfect.

Integration is not universal. Some catch-up programmes still launch a separate broadcaster app and may require another login. App support and behaviour can change, particularly on older hardware, so check the exact model and current software rather than assuming every service works indefinitely.
Playlist is not a Sky Q recorder
Gen 1 has no local hard-drive recording. Playlist saves a programme or links to its service; it does not create a permanent personal recording. Availability depends on rights, catch-up windows, the programme remaining online, service support and sometimes a separate login. A title can be delayed, disappear or carry the service’s normal advertising. This distinction is especially important for sports viewers, archive-minded households and anyone moving from Sky Q. Expert Reviews documents these restrictions.

- Device Compatibility: Specially designed for Apple TV 4K, 4th and 5th generation Siri remote controller
- Protective Silicone Material: Soft, lightweight silicone protects case against accidental drops
- Precise Cutouts and Fit: Easy access to ports and buttons perfectly fit for Apple Siri remote that protects back and sides from scratches, dirt and bumps
- Comfortable Grip Design: Easy to hold in hand to play games and move around, suitable for kids and adults alike
- Package Contents: Package includes 1 remote case only, remote sold separately
Broadband and subscription dependence
Sky’s current guidance recommends at least 25Mbps for streaming and says 30Mbps is required for certain UHD/HDR and Dolby Atmos use cases; it also recommends fibre broadband (Sky terms and Sky Help FAQs). Treat these as service guidance, not a guarantee. The television needs stable throughput at its location, and weak Wi‑Fi, router placement, congestion or simultaneous household use can still cause trouble. Ethernet is worth considering where practical.
An activated Glass can continue to work as a normal television without a Sky TV subscription, according to Sky Help. HDMI devices, an aerial and supported apps may remain usable, but Sky channels and other subscription features are restricted. Before buying used, confirm that the set is activated, removed from the seller’s account and capable of being linked to your Sky ID. An unactivated unit may offer only connected external devices until activation is completed.

Separate the hardware from the service. Historical review pricing was approximately £699 (43in), £949 (55in) and £1,199 (65in), with a review-era Sky package around £26 per month and UHD at an additional charge. Those figures are not current offers (Expert Reviews).
Sky’s current UK page shows new-customer streaming offers from £15 per month on a 24-month minimum term, Ultimate TV from £24 per month on a 24-month term, and the Ultra HD and Dolby Atmos Pack at £6 per month. Sports, Cinema, ad skipping, extra rooms and broadband can add more; prices and eligibility change (Sky Glass pricing).
Use this calculation rather than comparing a monthly TV instalment with an outright television price:

Gen 1 versus today’s alternatives
| Setup | Best reason to choose it | Main compromise |
|---|---|---|
| Used Sky Glass Gen 1 | Low-cost all-in-one Sky TV with stronger-than-average integrated sound | Older 60Hz LCD, account checks and uncertain used condition |
| Sky Glass Gen 2 | Current integrated model with brighter display, slimmer design and seven-speaker, 250W audio | Higher hardware cost and the same subscription model |
| Sky Glass Air | Lower-cost new Sky television; current prices shown are £359 (43in), £599 (55in) and £749 (65in) | Simpler audio and not a direct equivalent to Gen 1’s sound system |
| Sky Stream plus your TV | Sky interface without replacing a good screen; easier to move between rooms | No integrated speakers or new television |
| Normal smart TV plus streaming device | Most platform and subscription flexibility | No single Sky interface unless you add Sky’s service separately |
Gen 2 is the decisive comparison. Sky lists Gen 2 at £699, £949 and £1,199 for 43in, 55in and 65in respectively (current range). If a used Gen 1 approaches the equivalent Gen 2 price, choose Gen 2 instead. If you already own a good television, Expert Reviews’ recommendation of Sky Stream is usually more logical than buying another screen.

Three HDMI inputs make console connection convenient, and casual gaming is perfectly possible. Gen 1 is nevertheless a 60Hz display, with no cited Gen 1 specification listing a high-refresh gaming feature set. HDMI 2.1 labelling alone does not establish 4K/120, VRR or low-latency performance.
Bottom line for gamers: fine for occasional console use, but avoid it if you want a PS5 or Xbox Series X running 4K at 120Hz or a gaming-first display.
Used-buying checklist
- Confirm the exact size and that it is Gen 1, not Gen 2 or Glass Air.
- Inspect the panel for dead pixels, banding, clouding and backlight defects.
- Play audio at several volumes and listen for distortion, buzzing or dropouts.
- Check the remote, batteries, mains cable and stand are included.
- Test every HDMI input and eARC if you use a sound system.
- Connect to Wi‑Fi, complete software updates and verify that apps launch.
- Ask the seller to factory-reset the set and remove it from their Sky account.
- Confirm you can activate it with your own Sky ID; check whether finance obligations remain.
- Request proof of purchase, warranty information and a return option.
- Plan transport or professional removal: the chassis is thick and heavy.
Who should buy, keep or avoid it?
Existing Sky subscriber
Keep or buy Gen 1 if you want one tidy interface and better-than-average built-in sound, and the used price is low. The lack of recording still matters if you rely on Sky Q archives.

New Sky customer
Calculate the complete contract cost first. Compare Gen 2, Glass Air and Sky Stream rather than treating Gen 1’s hardware price as the total price.
Owner of a good TV
Choose Sky Stream unless replacing the television and adding integrated speakers is part of the plan.
Movie or picture-quality enthusiast
Look at a modern OLED or Mini-LED set with your preferred streaming device. Gen 1’s LCD picture is competent, not class-leading.
Serious gamer or weak-broadband household
Avoid it. The 60Hz panel and broadband-first design are fundamental limitations, not settings that a later app update fixes.

Sky Glass Gen 1 was an inventive response to the mess of satellite dishes, boxes, remotes and separate speakers. Its best qualities remain real: Sky is built in, discovery is coherent, and the audio is far better than most television speakers. But Gen 1 is now an older, superseded 60Hz LCD with cloud-based Playlist rather than recording, recurring subscription costs and no guarantee that every current app or feature will remain available.
In 2026, buy it only as a properly checked used bargain for a Sky-focused household. At anything near current Gen 2 pricing, choose Gen 2; if you already own a good screen, choose Sky Stream; if you do not need Sky channels, buy a conventional TV and keep your options open.
