On October 21, 2024, Meta disabled multiple Instagram and Threads accounts associated with Jack Sweeney’s automated aircraft trackers. The accounts followed jets linked to Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, Kim Kardashian, Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos and Kylie Jenner. Meta told TechCrunch that the accounts violated its privacy policy because they created a risk of physical harm.
The action recalled Twitter’s December 2022 suspension of @ElonJet, but it was not a blanket ban on all aviation tracking or necessarily on every Sweeney account. The dispute is over how platforms should treat publicly obtainable flight information when it is tied to a named person and distributed automatically, prominently and close to the time of travel.
What Meta actually suspended
The documented action involved several Instagram and Threads accounts, not a confirmed ban on Jack Sweeney’s entire Meta presence. The accounts were part of automated projects that associated aircraft with prominent individuals and posted movement updates.
- Platforms: Instagram and Threads.
- Reported subjects: aircraft connected with Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, Kim Kardashian, Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos and Kylie Jenner.
- Earlier action: Sweeney’s Taylor Swift tracker had reportedly been disabled earlier in 2024.
- Reported exceptions: accounts tracking aircraft linked to Donald Trump and Ron DeSantis were still accessible at the time of the October report.
These details come from the contemporaneous TechCrunch report. It is more accurate to describe the event as enforcement against multiple tracker accounts than to say simply that “Meta banned Jack Sweeney.”

When the decision happened
Meta’s accounts were reported unavailable on October 21, 2024. Sweeney compared the date with the Twitter suspension associated with December 15, 2022. Later web pages carrying 2026 publication dates appear to recycle the 2024 story; they do not establish a new 2026 suspension.
Why Meta said the accounts were dangerous
Meta said the accounts violated its privacy policy because of the risk of physical harm to the people whose aircraft were being tracked. The company also cited a recommendation from its independent Oversight Board.
That explanation is Meta’s policy justification, not a court finding that Sweeney’s tracking was illegal and not evidence that a physical attack occurred. The Oversight Board’s role includes recommendations and appeals concerning Meta’s moderation systems; the available reporting does not identify a public Board decision ordering these specific removals.
How the jet trackers worked
Aircraft can transmit identification and position information through aviation surveillance systems such as ADS-B. Receivers and flight-tracking networks collect those signals, while registration and ownership information can help connect an aircraft with a company or public figure. Sweeney’s systems then automated posts about departures, arrivals and routes.
The process turns specialist aviation data into a highly visible social-media feed. Several qualifications matter:
Rank #2
- FlyCatcher is an extremely high-performance, dual-channel SDR for airplane tracking and positioning applications. It is designed to receive both ADS-B (1090 MHz) signals and UAT (978 MHz). Outperforms all existing low-cost ADS-B solutions!
- Designed in a Pi HAT form factor for seamless compatibility with Raspberry Pi, but is also compatible with other Windows, Linux, Android and Mac OS host devices
- FlyCatcher has a compact form factor, making it portable and easy to carry, whether used with a Pi or a different host device. Despite its small size, it delivers impressive performance, ensuring reliable and accurate data reception for all your aviation-related endeavors
- This device comes with 2 separate preamplifiers that have ultra-low noise levels. You can choose to bypass them either using an external switch or software GPIO0, which is especially convenient when in extremely close proximity to a transmitter
- Your purchase includes the FlyCatcher dual-SDR Pi HAT, standoffs and headers to facilitate connection with a Pi, and 2 USB cables for connectivity to your host device. Though FlyCatcher does not utilize the Raspberry Pi GPIO due to its inherent bus speed limitations, there is a passthrough so the header can be utilized for other projects or Pi HATs
- An aircraft’s movement does not prove that a particular person was aboard.
- Ownership, leasing and registration structures can make attribution uncertain.
- Data can be delayed, incomplete, filtered or incorrectly associated with an aircraft.
- “Near real time” is not necessarily instantaneous, and the practical delay may vary by data source.
Those limitations weaken claims about who traveled, but they do not eliminate the safety concern created when a named person’s likely movements are continuously amplified to a mass audience.
How this followed Twitter/X’s ElonJet action
Twitter permanently suspended @ElonJet on December 14, 2022, along with Sweeney’s personal account and other automated flight trackers. The company then updated its private-information policy to prohibit sharing live location information. The sequence is documented in TechCrunch’s account of the suspension.
The policy debate did not end with a permanent ban. On December 22, 2022, an ElonJet account returned to Twitter with a 24-hour delay, illustrating a possible compromise between immediate safety and public access to historical information. TechCrunch reported on that delayed return.
Meta’s action therefore echoed the earlier precedent without proving that Meta and X apply identical rules. Musk’s public involvement made the Twitter case especially contentious, but the enforcement itself was carried out through Twitter’s platform systems and policy process.
The central dispute: public data versus amplified location
The strongest defense of flight trackers begins with the source of the information. Aircraft broadcasts and aviation records may be publicly obtainable, and flight movements can have legitimate public-interest value.
Rank #3
- DUAL BAND: 1090 and 978 UAT receivers. Detect aircraft on both frequencies. Ground based receiver only.
- ACCESSORIES: includes unit, two antennas, micro usb cable, power adapter, SD card installed with unmodified PiAware 8.2 pre-loaded SD card.
- PLUG AND PLAY: just configure your WiFi network on the microSD card, plug in, and go!
- WIDE RANGE: detect aircraft up to 150 NM away with included high gain antennas from the ground.
Why people argue for publication
- Environmental reporting: private-jet movements can inform analysis of aviation emissions.
- Corporate accountability: travel may be relevant to business, lobbying or governance reporting.
- Political scrutiny: public officials’ travel can matter to voters and investigators.
- Wealth and status reporting: aircraft use can illuminate spending and access.
- Open-source research: journalists and researchers may combine aviation data with other records.
Why platforms see a different risk
- A social account makes data easier to find than a specialist database.
- Automated posts can reveal recurring routes, airports and travel patterns.
- Near-real-time alerts can identify a likely destination while a person is still traveling.
- Mass distribution enables copying, searching and additional amplification.
- High-profile people may face stalking, harassment or targeted threats.
The key distinction is availability versus amplification. Information that can be found somewhere is not automatically equivalent to an immediate, personalized and automated feed delivered to a large audience. X’s current private-information policy similarly considers physical-harm risk, intent, how information is shared and whether it is available elsewhere.
Not all flight information is the same
Meta’s reported enforcement does not establish a prohibition on aviation data generally. These categories carry different practical risks:

|---|---|
| General aviation tracking | Does not necessarily identify a person or expose a private itinerary. |
| Historical reporting | Delay reduces immediate location risk while preserving documentary value. |
| Private-jet emissions research | May use aggregated routes or post-trip analysis rather than live alerts. |
| Named-person aircraft tracking | Links an aircraft identifier to a specific individual, increasing identifiability. |
| Near-real-time automated posts | Combines precision, speed, automation and audience scale in the highest-risk format. |
A platform can therefore distinguish ordinary aviation discussion from an account dedicated to publishing a named person’s likely movements. The available evidence supports that narrower reading, not a claim that Meta banned every aircraft identifier, celebrity-travel report or flight-tracking service.
Why some political trackers reportedly remained online
The reported survival of Trump- and DeSantis-related tracker accounts creates a consistency question. The available coverage does not establish whether the difference reflected timing, account-level enforcement, public-interest considerations, different content, a different risk assessment or an undisclosed internal threshold.
That uncertainty matters because contextual moderation is flexible but difficult to audit. A clear explanation would address whether enforcement depends on:

- the timing and precision of each post;
- the aircraft identifier and confidence of attribution;

Without that information, observers can document the different outcomes but should not infer the reason for them.

What the decision means for journalism and research
Platforms increasingly regulate not only whether location information is public, but also how quickly, precisely and repeatedly it is distributed. That affects newsroom workflows, environmental researchers and open-source investigators.
Lower-risk practices
- Use meaningful delays for sensitive movements.
- Report patterns or aggregated findings instead of publishing a live itinerary.
- Explain that aircraft attribution does not establish passenger identity.
- Give readers context and public-interest reasoning rather than automated alerts alone.
- Separate historical documentation from instructions that could facilitate immediate monitoring.
These practices do not guarantee that a post complies with every platform’s rules. They illustrate how publishers can preserve informational value while reducing the immediacy and precision that Meta and X identify as safety concerns.
Platform policy is not the same as legality
Meta can remove an account under its terms even when the underlying aviation signal is publicly obtainable and publication is not clearly unlawful. Conversely, public availability does not make every use ethically or editorially justified. The 2024 Meta enforcement should therefore be understood as a platform-policy decision, not a judicial ruling on the legality of Sweeney’s projects.
That distinction also explains why the controversy persists. The public-data argument addresses access and public interest; Meta’s response addresses distribution, timing and foreseeable harm. Both can be relevant at once.

Frequently Asked Questions
Did Meta ban Jack Sweeney entirely?
No. The documented action disabled multiple Sweeney-linked Instagram and Threads tracker accounts. It did not establish that every account he operated or his entire Meta presence was removed.
Was the aircraft data illegal to collect?
The available reporting does not establish that a court ruled the tracking illegal. Meta described the accounts as violating its privacy policy because of physical-harm risk.
Does a tracked jet prove a celebrity was on board?
No. Aircraft ownership, leasing, registration and passenger information can differ, and flight data may be delayed or incomplete.
Can delayed reporting reduce the risk?
Yes, delay can reduce immediate location exposure. Twitter’s 2022 return of ElonJet with a 24-hour delay demonstrated that approach, although no delay guarantees compliance with every platform policy.

The Bottom Line
Meta’s October 21, 2024 action was a targeted enforcement against multiple celebrity- and executive-jet tracker accounts on Instagram and Threads. Its stated concern was the physical-safety risk of near-real-time, highly amplified location information—not a blanket prohibition on aviation data. The unresolved issue is how consistently platforms distinguish legitimate public-interest reporting from personalized live-location surveillance.
