Yes. Instagram introduced Close Friends on Live on June 20, 2024. Before starting a broadcast, an eligible account can select its existing Close Friends list instead of the usual public or follower audience. That makes Live less public and more suitable for a study session, trip planning, informal Q&A, or a conversation with people you know. It is still not an encrypted, copy-proof video call: viewers may be able to record, repeat, or redistribute what they see.
Instagram announced the feature in its launch coverage at TechCrunch. Availability, labels, and eligibility can vary by account, country, age status, app version, and rollout.
What changed with Close Friends Live?
Ordinary Instagram Live is designed for a broader audience that may include eligible followers and other people who discover the broadcast. Close Friends Live adds an audience choice before you go live: select Close Friends and the intended Instagram audience becomes the people on your curated list.
This is different from several other Instagram features:

How to start an Instagram Live for Close Friends
The exact labels can change, but the expected flow is in the Instagram mobile app:
- Open Instagram on an iPhone or Android phone.
- Tap the create button or swipe to open the camera, then choose Live.
- Before broadcasting, open the Audience, Who can watch, or equivalent audience selector.
- Choose Close Friends instead of the normal public or follower audience.
- Review the selected audience and check that your Close Friends list is current.
- Tap Start Live (or the current equivalent) to begin.
- If Instagram offers guest controls, invite guests only after checking who is eligible to join.
Instagram’s Help Center says starting a Live is supported on Android and iPhone, not on computers: Instagram Help Center: start a Live broadcast.
Before you tap Start
- Pause on the pre-Live screen and verify that the audience label says Close Friends.
- Review the list immediately before a sensitive broadcast; an old contact can remain on it until you remove them.
- Do not assume a guest changes the audience in a predictable way. Instagram’s current guest behavior and labels should be checked in the app.
Who can watch?
The host chooses the existing Close Friends list, so being a follower alone does not automatically make someone eligible. Someone outside that list should not be able to join through the normal audience route. This describes Instagram’s intended audience restriction, not a guarantee that the content can never travel beyond the list.

Viewers are not anonymous. Instagram’s viewing guidance says the host and other viewers may be able to see when someone joins, and viewers can use available controls to comment, like comments, reply, react, and share the video within Instagram. See Instagram’s Live viewing help.
Instagram guidance reported by Social Media Today indicates that notification behavior depends on whether the selected audience is followers or Close Friends, but notifications and visibility can differ by account and rollout: Live notification guidance.
What Close Friends does not guarantee
- It is not end-to-end encryption.
- It does not prevent screenshots, screen recordings, filming the screen with another device, or someone repeating what was said.
- It does not guarantee that a person who was removed after watching has forgotten or deleted what they saw.
- It does not stop the host from later downloading or republishing the recording to a wider audience.
Use it for content that is meant to be less public, not for passwords, legally confidential material, or information that must never be copied.
Guests and audience size
Launch coverage reported that the host can go Live with up to three other people, matching Instagram’s Live Rooms model. That means a maximum of four people on screen including the host, subject to the current account interface and eligibility. The number of co-hosts is not the same as the number of Close Friends who may watch, the number of notifications sent, or the size of your list. Meta’s Live Rooms announcement is at about.fb.com.

Do not rely on claims that a guest automatically exposes the broadcast to that guest’s own Close Friends. Available authoritative help material does not establish that behavior. Check the invitation and audience controls shown by your current account instead.
What happens when the Live ends?
Instagram gives the host a separate decision about the recording. From the end-of-Live screen or the Live archive, the host may share a replay, download the video to the camera roll, or delete it. A replay can also be shared to the profile and Feed. Instagram says a replay does not retain the original Live’s likes or comments, viewer counts restart when it is shared, and the video cannot be edited or trimmed before being shared as a replay. Details are in Instagram’s replay help.
That creates a second privacy decision. A broadcast that was limited to Close Friends can become visible to a different audience if you post the downloaded file, share a clip elsewhere, or publish the replay to your profile. Check the audience again before confirming any replay or other upload.
If the Close Friends option is missing

- Update Instagram from the official iOS or Android app store.
- Force-close and reopen the app, then try the mobile Live flow again.
- Confirm that the account can start a normal Live and read any eligibility message Instagram displays.
- Check whether the account is public if your market or account type applies that rule.
- Review age-related limits, teen-account settings, policy enforcement, or a temporary Live restriction.
- Make sure the Close Friends list is not empty or outdated.
- Try another eligible account only as a comparison; different accounts can receive features at different times.
- Avoid third-party “unlock” or private-viewer tools. They are unnecessary for the feature and can put your account or data at risk.
A localized official Instagram Help Center page states that starting Live requires a public account and at least 1,000 followers: Instagram’s eligibility guidance. Treat that as an official rule for the locale shown, not a universal promise for every country, age status, or account. If one account has the selector and another does not, that is more likely to reflect eligibility or staged rollout than proof that Close Friends Live has been removed. User reports illustrate inconsistent availability but are anecdotal, including this report and this report.

A stale Close Friends list
Close Friends is manually curated. Remove former friends, old collaborators, or anyone who should not see the broadcast before you start; do not assume Instagram will infer a new boundary from your recent interactions.
Removing someone during a Live
Removing a viewer should not be treated as retroactive deletion. If the wrong person gained access to sensitive material, end the broadcast, review the list and account settings, and assume anything already viewed could have been saved.
Selecting the wrong audience
The practical safeguard is a final check on the pre-Live screen. If a person outside Close Friends reports seeing a notification, investigate whether the normal Live audience was selected, whether that person was still on the list, whether a co-host or replay was involved, or whether they saw a repost rather than the original broadcast.

Is Close Friends Live suitable for monetization?
Live Badges are a separate Instagram feature for eligible creator and business accounts. Instagram lists requirements including being at least 18, following monetization policies, and setting up payouts; its help material says Instagram’s revenue share is currently 0%, while Apple and Google may charge their own in-app purchase fees. See Instagram’s Badges requirements.
Close Friends Live is primarily an intimacy and privacy tool, not a reach strategy. A restricted audience can reduce discovery, and Badges may be unavailable in a particular country or account. Do not assume that every monetization or discovery feature from a public Live remains available after switching audiences.
Choosing the right format
| Format | Best for | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Close Friends Live | A casual broadcast for a known group, with comments and reactions | Lower reach; viewers can still copy or repeat content |
| Public Instagram Live | Discovery, follower growth, and broad watch time | Much wider and less predictable audience |
| Instagram group video call | Conversation-first interaction with a small group | Not the same broadcast format or Live audience experience |
| Dedicated private meeting or webinar service | Formal events, stronger access controls, attendance management, or production tools | Requires a separate service and setup |
Choose Close Friends Live when “less public” is the goal. Choose a group call or dedicated meeting platform when you need tighter access management, structured participation, or formal confidentiality.
Bottom line
Instagram’s Close Friends-only Live is a real feature launched in June 2024. It lets an eligible host select a curated Close Friends audience for a smaller, lower-pressure broadcast, potentially with up to three other people on screen. Treat the list, the pre-Live audience selector, and any later replay as separate privacy decisions—and never mistake a restricted Instagram audience for guaranteed secrecy.
