Sinners Reviews: Why Ryan Coogler’s Film Was One of 2025’s Best

Sinners was widely hailed as one of 2025’s most ambitious films. Here’s why critics praised its vampire mythology, music, performances, visuals, and historical allegory—and where the film falls short.

Yes—but with an important qualification: Sinners was not universally judged the single best film of 2025. The stronger and more defensible conclusion is that Ryan Coogler’s vampire epic was widely received as one of the year’s most distinctive, ambitious, and culturally resonant studio films.

The early reviews identified the reasons quickly: Michael B. Jordan’s unusually demanding dual performance, Coogler’s collision of vampire horror with history, gangster cinema, Southern Gothic, musical drama, and social allegory, and a film in which music functions as memory, inheritance, resistance, and communal power rather than mere background atmosphere.

Spoiler-light review

The verdict on Sinners

Sinners is a major genre film precisely because it refuses to behave like only one kind of film. It begins with the familiar shape of a supernatural thriller: twin brothers return to their hometown in the Deep South and attempt to begin again, only to encounter a greater evil waiting for them. But that setup becomes the entrance to a much larger story about Black community, cultural inheritance, historical violence, freedom, and the price of surrendering one’s identity.

That ambition explains both the acclaim and the reservations. Critics praised the film’s confidence, performances, music, visual design, and thematic reach. Some also found it overloaded, occasionally too explicit in its allegory, or less controlled in its final movement than in the buildup. Those are not minor objections, but they are also part of the film’s identity. Sinners would be less singular if it were tidier, safer, or more restrained.

#1 Best Overall

Bottom-line rating in words: an unusually ambitious, visually commanding, music-driven supernatural drama whose excesses are inseparable from its originality. Viewers who want economical horror may find it maximalist. Viewers drawn to history, performance, music, and formally adventurous genre cinema will find a great deal to admire.

What is Sinners about?

Written and directed by Ryan Coogler, Sinners stars Michael B. Jordan as twin brothers. The ensemble includes Hailee Steinfeld, Jack O’Connell, Wunmi Mosaku, Jayme Lawson, Omar Miller, Delroy Lindo, and newcomer Miles Caton. Warner Bros. released the film in the United States on April 18, 2025, following international openings beginning April 16.

Editorially, the simplest description is “a 1930s Deep South vampire film.” That is accurate, but incomplete. The movie is also a historical drama, a bloody thriller, a Southern Gothic story, a gangster narrative, a musical, and an allegory about exploitation and assimilation. Variety’s description of the film as a richly imagined portrait of a Deep South community in the early 1930s captures why its period setting matters: the past is not simply a costume or backdrop. It is the material from which the film builds its mythology.

The central location—a juke joint and the community gathered around it—gives the movie a physical and emotional center. It is a place where people can perform, remember, grieve, celebrate, and imagine a degree of freedom. The supernatural threat does not merely endanger individual lives. It threatens the community’s ability to retain its culture and determine its own future.

Why the first reviews were so enthusiastic

1. It makes genre fusion feel purposeful

The most obvious reason for the early enthusiasm was the film’s refusal to keep its genres in separate compartments. Sinners has the machinery of vampire horror, but it also draws on the rhythms of a historical epic, the tension of a crime film, the visual and emotional traditions of Southern Gothic, and the communal release of a musical.

That mixture could easily have become a collection of disconnected ideas. Instead, the strongest reviews saw the genres working together. The vampire story gives the film a supernatural language for discussing historical and cultural predation. The gangster framework grounds the story in money, territory, loyalty, and danger. The musical sequences express a kind of freedom that ordinary dialogue cannot contain. The period setting gives all of those elements historical weight.

Metacritic’s review record reflects this split response. One strand of criticism praised the movie’s genre-mashing audacity and rich characterization while questioning aspects of the ending and some of the action. Another described it as a distinctive and confident mainstream film but raised a more structural concern: what happens when ambitious art is created inside commercial systems that can profit from the very histories and identities the art is examining?

That tension is central to the film’s interest. Sinners is a large Warner Bros. production, but it is not content to use horror as disposable spectacle. It wants the spectacle to carry historical and cultural meaning.

2. Music is the film’s dramatic engine

Music is not decoration in Sinners. It is one of the film’s governing ideas.

Variety’s reading connects the juke joint’s music to liberation and contrasts that liberating force with the vampires’ desire to suppress, possess, or absorb it. The film’s blues mythology and vampire imagery are therefore linked: both concern what can survive across generations, who has the right to claim cultural expression, and whether communal identity can remain free when outsiders try to consume it.

The Rotten Tomatoes first-reviews roundup similarly emphasized music as a force that can cross time, connect generations, and carry both grief and joy. Ludwig Göransson’s score was repeatedly singled out as one of his strongest. That praise is not simply about the quality of the melodies or the atmosphere of the sound design. It recognizes that the score and performances help explain what the characters are fighting to preserve.

The result is a film in which a musical performance can feel as consequential as a confrontation. Music becomes memory made audible. It carries ancestry without reducing ancestry to exposition, and it gives the community a shared language that the supernatural threat cannot easily control.

3. Its historical allegory has real specificity

The film’s vampires invite interpretation as figures of exploitation, assimilation, and the theft of communal freedom. Several critical readings connect the supernatural story to Black American history, Southern racism, ancestral trauma, Black families, Black-owned property, kinship, and the struggle to protect cultural identity.

RogerEbert.com’s review summary places African folklore, America’s racial history, Black families, property, ancestors, and music within the same thematic network. That is a useful way to understand the film’s scope. Sinners is not using vampire mythology to make a vague statement that “evil exists.” It uses the mythology to ask what kind of bargain is being offered when a force promises permanence, safety, or eternal life in exchange for submission.

It is worth describing this as a critical interpretation rather than as a definitive statement of authorial intent. Coogler’s film leaves room for different readings, but the connection between supernatural consumption and cultural exploitation is not incidental. The movie repeatedly returns to freedom, inheritance, community, and the danger of allowing another power to define what must be surrendered.

4. Michael B. Jordan makes the twin role more than a gimmick

Jordan’s dual performance was the most consistently praised individual element in the early reviews. The achievement is not merely technical. The two brothers must register as distinct people with different energies, histories, and relationships to the world around them. Jordan gives the film two different centers of gravity rather than playing the same character twice with altered clothing and posture.

Critics described the performance as career-best or among the strongest of his career. There is one qualification: the duality can occasionally create confusion, particularly when the film is moving quickly or when the brothers’ identities are being tracked alongside a large ensemble. That is a limitation of the presentation, not evidence that the performance lacks differentiation.

The supporting cast gives the film much of its communal texture. Miles Caton emerged as a major discovery in his feature debut, while Delroy Lindo and Wunmi Mosaku also drew particular praise. Their work helps keep the story from becoming only a showcase for Jordan or Coogler’s formal ambitions. The film’s emotional force depends on the surrounding community feeling like a collection of people rather than symbolic pieces arranged around the central premise.

The visual achievement: shadows, celluloid, and scale

Autumn Durald Arkapaw’s cinematography is one of the clearest reasons Sinners feels larger than a standard period horror release. The critical discussion highlights celluloid contrast, deep shadows, bold compositions, and an immersive Mississippi setting. The image does not simply make the period look attractive. It gives the film a tactile sense of place, then uses darkness and composition to change how that place feels as the supernatural danger closes in.

The movie was designed with large-format presentation in mind. IMAX states that selected sequences expand to a 1.43:1 aspect ratio in qualifying IMAX 70mm and IMAX with Laser locations. That distinction matters: the full theatrical 1.43:1 experience was dependent on specific venues and projection formats, not something every cinema or home television could reproduce.

The 4K home presentation preserves the film’s shifting aspect-ratio design. AVForums describes the release as native 4K with Dolby Vision HDR and praises the movement between expansive and claustrophobic compositions. At home, the change in framing remains part of the film’s visual grammar, even though it should not be marketed as identical to seeing the selected sequences in a qualifying 1.43:1 IMAX theater.

This is a film where image quality has an unusually direct relationship to the experience. Deep blacks, high-contrast photography, and the difference between an open frame and a constricted one are not cosmetic details. They affect the film’s sense of freedom and entrapment.

Where Sinners is less successful

The main criticism is that the film may be carrying too much. Coogler is working with multiple genres, two related mythologies, a historical argument, a musical theory of memory, several character arcs, and a supernatural conflict. Variety explicitly suggested that the film can become overloaded by its dual mythology.

Some critics found the ending less satisfying than the buildup. The early sections establish atmosphere, community, and thematic stakes with considerable confidence; the final movement has to resolve those ideas while delivering the expected horror and action. For some viewers, the action is less inventive or consistent than the film’s visual language and ideas.

The film’s allegory can also become explicit. Viewers who prefer themes to remain submerged beneath plot and image may find certain passages preachy. Others will see that directness as a virtue: Sinners is not embarrassed by its ideas, and it would rather risk overstatement than turn its historical concerns into vague mood.

These reservations should not be dismissed as complaints from people who failed to understand the movie. They identify genuine trade-offs. The same maximalism that gives Sinners its sweep can make it feel crowded. The same thematic clarity that gives it force can occasionally sound like explanation. The same ambition that produces memorable set pieces can make the final stretch feel comparatively uneven.

How strong is the critical consensus?

The headline claim that Sinners was “one of the best films of the year” began as an early critical reaction and became more defensible as the year’s recognition accumulated. It should still be framed as a critical judgment, not an objective ranking.

Measure What it supports What it does not prove
Rotten Tomatoes’ first-reviews roundup Strong early enthusiasm for Jordan, the genre blend, music, visuals, and thematic ambition; several critics directly called it one of the year’s best. That every critic agreed, or that the film had no weaknesses.
Metacritic: 84/100 from 55 critic reviews Broad critical acclaim and a substantial consensus at the time of the research snapshot. Universal approval; the excerpts also preserve disagreement about the ending, action, and the limits of its commercial context.
National Board of Review Sinners was named among the 2025 Top Films. Ryan Coogler won Best Original Screenplay, and Autumn Durald Arkapaw received Outstanding Achievement in Cinematography. A claim that the film swept every major critics’ or awards group.
98th Academy Awards, March 15, 2026 Sixteen nominations and three wins: Michael B. Jordan for Leading Actor, Ryan Coogler for Original Screenplay, and Ludwig Göransson for Original Score. That it won Best Picture or Best Director; it did not win either award.

The Oscar record is especially significant for Jordan, whose leading-actor win formalized the strength of the dual performance that critics had identified from the beginning. Delroy Lindo and Wunmi Mosaku were also nominated in supporting acting categories. The 16 nominations reached across Best Picture, Directing, Original Screenplay, acting, cinematography, editing, score, costume design, production design, sound, visual effects, makeup and hairstyling, and casting.

In other words, the later awards record did not turn Sinners into an uncontested champion. It did confirm that the film’s achievement was broad: acting, writing, music, cinematography, design, craft, and overall production were all part of the conversation.

How to watch or own Sinners

Streaming

Warner Bros. announced that Sinners began streaming exclusively on Max in the United States on July 4, 2025. Streaming catalogs and territorial rights can change, so viewers should check the current listing in their country rather than assuming the U.S. arrangement applies elsewhere.

Physical editions

The physical release arrived on July 8, 2025 in 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD formats. For viewers with a compatible 4K player and Dolby Vision-capable display, the Sinners 4K UHD Blu-ray is the most technically persuasive edition. Its native-4K presentation, Dolby Vision HDR, and preserved shifting aspect ratios directly serve the qualities that make the film worth revisiting.

The disc does not mean that every scene reproduces the exact full 1.43:1 theatrical IMAX image. The expanded home ratios preserve the filmmakers’ variable framing, while the most expansive theatrical presentation depended on qualifying IMAX 70mm or IMAX with Laser venues. That is still a meaningful home-video feature; it is simply not the same exhibition condition.

The Sinners Blu-ray and Sinners DVD are sensible alternatives for viewers without 4K equipment or for anyone who prioritizes basic physical ownership over the most advanced image format. Do not assume that the lower-resolution editions will provide the same HDR and native-4K presentation.

Music-related editions

For viewers who respond most strongly to the film’s musical dimension, Ludwig Göransson’s Sinners score is a natural companion. The original motion-picture score is available as a music album, and vinyl editions of the score and soundtrack have been reported. Exact pressings, retailers, and stock can vary, so collectors should verify the specific edition before buying. The music is worth pursuing as a companion to the film—not as a substitute for the scenes in which performance, place, character, and sound operate together.

Who should watch Sinners?

You are likely to enjoy it if you want… You may be less convinced if you prefer…
Genre films that combine horror with history, crime, folklore, and social allegory. A narrowly focused horror story with minimal exposition.
Music that advances character and theme rather than simply creating mood. A conventional score that stays in the background.
Large-scale visual design, deep shadows, period atmosphere, and changing aspect ratios. Naturalistic or deliberately understated cinematography.
Ambitious performances, including a demanding dual role and a strong ensemble. A small cast and a tightly contained narrative.
Films willing to state their historical and political ideas clearly. Allegory that remains entirely subtle or interpretively open.

Sinners is best approached as a work of ambitious popular cinema rather than as a perfectly controlled exercise in restraint. Its excess is the point of entry: there is always another connection between the music and the history, the vampires and exploitation, the juke joint and freedom, or the brothers and the film’s larger argument about inheritance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Sinners really one of the best films of 2025?

That is a defensible critical judgment, not an objective fact. The film received strong early reviews, an 84/100 Metacritic score in the cited review snapshot, National Board of Review recognition, and 16 Oscar nominations with three wins. Its ambition and originality were widely praised, although some critics found it overstuffed or less controlled at the end.

Is Sinners only a vampire horror movie?

No. It is best understood as a period supernatural horror film that also incorporates historical drama, Southern Gothic, gangster storytelling, musical performance, and social allegory. Its vampire mythology is connected by critics to exploitation, assimilation, cultural inheritance, and the struggle to preserve communal freedom.

Is the Sinners 4K release worth choosing?

It is the strongest physical option for viewers with compatible equipment because the release is reported as native 4K with Dolby Vision HDR and preserves the film’s changing aspect ratios. It does not reproduce the exact full 1.43:1 theatrical IMAX experience in every setup; that depended on qualifying IMAX venues and formats.

Did Sinners win any Oscars?

Yes. At the 98th Academy Awards on March 15, 2026, it won three Oscars: Michael B. Jordan for Leading Actor, Ryan Coogler for Original Screenplay, and Ludwig Göransson for Original Score. It did not win Best Picture or Best Director.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Sinners earned its place among 2025’s most acclaimed films by making its ambition visible in every department: Jordan’s dual performance, Coogler’s genre fusion, Göransson’s music, Arkapaw’s cinematography, and the film’s sustained interest in freedom, memory, and cultural inheritance. It is not flawless, and its crowded mythology and uneven final movement will frustrate some viewers. But those imperfections belong to a film attempting far more than a routine vampire thriller—and that attempt is why the early “one of the best films of the year” reaction ultimately held up.
