These 56 actors represent a wide range of Asian and Asian-diasporic screen traditions: silent Hollywood, Hong Kong action cinema, Japanese auteur film, Korean television, Hindi and regional Indian cinema, Southeast Asian performance, American television, and global streaming. This is a representative guide, not a ranking. There is no single Asian acting style, and no one industry or nationality can stand in for the whole continent or its diasporas.
The most useful way to read the list is as a set of viewing paths. Some performers are foundational pioneers; others transformed action cinema, built the global reach of Korean dramas, carried Indian popular cinema to international audiences, or made Asian identities more visible in American comedy, drama, animation, and franchise entertainment.
Film and documentary viewers should treat the names below as starting points rather than a checklist. The recommended films and series span different languages, periods, genres, and industries. Availability changes by country, platform, format, and licensing window.
Why these 56 actors matter
Asian performers have been central to screen history since the earliest decades of cinema. Their careers have unfolded under very different conditions: discriminatory casting systems in early Hollywood, the international rise of Hong Kong martial-arts films, the creative influence of Japanese and Chinese directors, the worldwide popularity of Indian cinema, the Korean Wave, and the expansion of streaming and global franchise productions.

That history is not simply a story of more Asian faces appearing in Hollywood. It is also a story of performers moving between industries and refusing narrow categories. Michelle Yeoh can move from Hong Kong action cinema to an Oscar-winning science-fiction comedy-drama. Irrfan Khan could work in Hindi cinema, independent international films, and Hollywood productions. Bae Doona and Hiroyuki Sanada have built careers across national film industries and English-language series. Performers such as Mindy Kaling, Riz Ahmed, Steven Yeun, and Awkwafina have also changed what Asian and Asian-diasporic roles can look like in American entertainment.
Nationality, ethnicity, birthplace, heritage, and principal industry are not interchangeable. The descriptions below use those distinctions where they help explain each actor’s career.
Pioneers and foundational stars
1. Anna May Wong
Anna May Wong was a Chinese American pioneer whose career crossed silent film, sound film, stage, radio, and television. The U.S. Mint describes her as the first Chinese American film star in Hollywood and notes that she appeared in more than 60 films. Her career also illustrates the barriers facing Asian performers in early American cinema: she was often offered stereotyped or supporting roles while white performers were cast in Asian parts. Start with The Thief of Bagdad, Shanghai Express, and archival material about her life and career. The American Women Quarters program’s commemoration of Wong is another useful reminder of her historical importance.
For historical context beyond the screen, readers may want Not Your China Doll: The Wild and Shimmering Life of Anna May Wong, a biography focused on the performer’s life, career, and significance.

For students and film-history readers: To Be an Actress: Labor and Performance in Anna May Wong’s Cross-Media World offers a more scholarly study of Wong’s work across media and the labor conditions surrounding her career. It is better suited to readers seeking archival and historical analysis than to someone looking for a quick introduction.
Anna May Wong is an especially useful place to begin because her career makes the historical through-line visible: Asian performers were present from Hollywood’s early years, but discriminatory casting and stereotypes sharply restricted the roles available to them. The careers of the other 55 actors show many different responses to, and expansions beyond, those earlier limits.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is this a ranking of the 56 best Asian actors?
No. It is a representative, cross-regional introduction rather than a ranked list. The selection aims to include different national cinemas, diasporas, generations, genders, genres, and media.
What does Asian mean in this article?
It includes actors working in Asian film and television, Asian-diasporic performers working in Hollywood and other international industries, and performers whose careers bridge multiple markets. Asian identities are not interchangeable, so the article distinguishes heritage, nationality, birthplace, and principal industry where relevant.
Where can I watch the films and series mentioned here?
Availability varies by country, platform, licensing window, language options, and physical-media region. Search for each title through a local streaming guide, library catalog, repertory cinema, or retailer rather than assuming every recommendation is currently available in the same place.
The Bottom Line
These 56 performers do not represent one Asian acting tradition. Together, they map several: silent Hollywood and its restrictions, Hong Kong action cinema, Japanese and Chinese art-house film, Korean drama and film, Indian popular and regional cinema, Southeast Asian performance, Asian American television, and global streaming. The list is most valuable when it leads you to performances, directors, languages, and film industries you have not yet explored.
