Spoilers for the full film and its credits scenes. Sammie is the only living survivor of the attack at the juke joint. Smoke survives the vampire fight but is mortally wounded later, while the mid-credits scene reveals that Stack and Mary survived as vampires and return to see Sammie in 1992.
Who survives the attack at the juke joint?
Sammie is the sole living survivor. In the climactic fight, he injures Remmick with his guitar, giving Smoke an opening to kill the vampire. As the sun rises, the vampire horde is destroyed. Smoke tells Sammie to leave and go home.
Smoke does not survive the night. After the vampire battle, the Klan members who sold the twins the club return and attack. Smoke fights them, but dies from his wounds. His survival of the fight with Remmick is not the same as surviving the night.
What does the mid-credits scene reveal about Stack and Mary?
In 1992, Stack and Mary return to see an elderly Sammie, now a successful blues musician. The scene reveals that they survived as vampires. Although Smoke appears to kill Stack during the fight, he had let his brother go before sunrise after making him promise to leave Sammie alone. Stack and Mary kept their distance until the reunion.
#1 Best Overall
Stack offers to make Sammie a vampire so he can live on. Sammie refuses. The choice sets their different kinds of continuity side by side: Stack and Mary remain together through immortality, while Sammie has lived a human life and continued making music.
Why does the film return to Sammie’s music?
After the 1992 reunion, the film returns to its opening image of Sammie at his father’s church, then shows him as a young man before the night’s events, playing “This Little Light of Mine.” These closing shifts move the story beyond the immediate question of who got out alive and toward memory, music and the life Sammie goes on to live.

Writer-director Ryan Coogler described the importance of Sammie’s blues performance in an interview with The Atlantic: “When I got to that moment of Sammie playing the blues, that’s when it hit me that I had to do this. I had to express, in a way that only film language can express, the monumental importance of what these people are doing and how it would reach through time.” The 1992 scene gives that idea a concrete shape: Sammie’s music carries his life forward without vampirism.
