The rendition drew widespread online criticism, and the next day Andress said she had been drunk and apologized.
What happened at the Home Run Derby?
Andress sang the U.S. national anthem before the Derby at Globe Life Field. Clips of the performance spread online, prompting criticism from viewers. CBS News reported that many viewers described the singing as off pitch; Axios characterized parts as slowing to a whisper and seeming out of pitch. Those are descriptions of the performance and audience reaction, not measured vocal assessments.
CBS News also noted that the broadcast showed Phillies player Alec Bohm smirking. The moment became part of the online response, but it does not establish what he was thinking.
What did Andress say afterward?
On July 16, Andress said she had been drunk during the performance and was checking herself into a facility to get help. In a statement reproduced by CBS News, she wrote, “That was not me last night,” and apologized “to MLB, all the fans, and this country I love so much for that rendition.” Axios quoted her saying, “I’m checking myself into a facility today to get the help I need.”
