Olivia Rodrigo has described Filipino heritage on her father’s side and spoken about Filipino traditions in her family, including lumpia at Thanksgiving. In a 2021 interview, she also discussed being biracial and learning about the model-minority myth. Her own accounts establish those family and identity details; they do not establish that she speaks Tagalog or provide a precise ancestry percentage.
What is Olivia Rodrigo’s ethnicity?
Rodrigo has spoken about being biracial and about her Filipino heritage through her father’s family. In a January 2018 interview with the Center for Asian American Media (CAAM), she described her great-grandfather as having immigrated from the Philippines as a teenager, and said her grandfather was Filipino as well. The family history is her own account; it does not supply enough detail to calculate an ancestry fraction.
Biography.com’s profile, updated April 6, 2026, reports that Rodrigo’s mother has German and Irish heritage. That detail is secondary biographical reporting, rather than something established in the CAAM interview. Vogue’s 2023 profile also describes her paternal family as Filipino.
What has she said about her Filipino roots?
In the CAAM interview, Rodrigo described the traditions carried through her father’s family:
#1 Best Overall
“My great-grandfather immigrated here from the Philippines when he was just a teenager. He’s my grandma’s dad, and my grandpa is also Filipino as well. My dad grew up in a house where they were always making Filipino food, his grandpa always spoke Tagalog. All of those traditions have trickled down to our generation. Every Thanksgiving we have lumpia, and things like that.”
Her account connects family ancestry with cultural practices at home: Filipino food, Tagalog spoken by her great-grandfather, and lumpia at Thanksgiving. It is not evidence that Rodrigo herself speaks Tagalog.
What she said about visiting the Philippines
In that same 2018 interview, Rodrigo said she had never been to the Philippines, wanted to go, and had extended family there she had not met. That describes what was true when she gave the interview; it does not establish her travel history since then.
What has Olivia Rodrigo said about being biracial?
In a 2021 interview with Nylon, Rodrigo reflected on being biracial and Filipina, including what she had learned about the model-minority myth after the 2020 racial justice protests. She described that myth as the “untrue idea” that Asian people and immigrants were doing fine, and said she was continuing to educate herself:
“That was a big thing I learned about and educated myself on during the Black Lives Matter movement after the murder of George Floyd. It’s something I’m constantly still reminding myself of, and educating myself on, and I’ll never stop.”
Her comments were about challenging a stereotype and understanding racism, not about using ancestry as a measure of belonging.

What has she said about Asian representation?
A 2024 feature by The POST recounts Rodrigo’s reaction to girls telling her that seeing Asian representation in music mattered to them. The feature, which cites a Myx Global interview, reports her response: “Oh, yeah, that’s cool. Yeah, I’m that.” The remark is presented in the context of audience members recognizing her as an Asian artist and telling her what that visibility meant to them.
