Recommended Free Tools
If you want a legal replacement for Afdah, start with free, ad-supported services such as Tubi, Pluto TV, The Roku Channel, Plex and Crackle. Library services Kanopy and Hoopla can be better for documentaries and classic films, while YouTube, Internet Archive and selected free tiers cover additional niches. Availability, advertising, account requirements and catalogs vary by country and change over time.
Afdah-style piracy indexes are not a dependable or lawful way to watch copyrighted movies. The services below are current alternatives identified in 2026 sources; the original assignment’s 2024 date is therefore updated.
15 legal Afdah alternatives, compared
| Service | What it offers | What to know before watching |
|---|---|---|
| Tubi | Free, ad-supported movies and TV from studios including Paramount, Lionsgate and MGM. | Supported on web, Android, iOS, Roku, Apple TV, Fire TV, Xbox, Samsung and Sony smart TVs, PlayStation and Xfinity X1. Tubi explains that short ad breaks fund the service at its help center. |
| Pluto TV | Free live channels plus on-demand movies and television. | Best for a traditional channel-surfing experience as well as an on-demand library. Catalogs and channels vary by region. See current service comparisons from Tom’s Guide and Digital Citizen. |
| The Roku Channel | Free, ad-supported movies, shows and live programming. | It is not limited to Roku hardware; current reporting describes browser, smartphone and other TV access. On a Roku device, use Home → Free or Home → Featured Free. A selected title may open the separate service that supplies it. Details: Roku support. |
| Plex | Free ad-supported movies, shows and live TV, including partner content from Lionsgate, AMC and Crackle. | A free account adds a universal watchlist, favorite live channels and personalized listings for other streaming services. Playback is ad-supported. |
| Kanopy | Independent, classic, documentary and critically acclaimed films. | Requires a participating public-library card or university login. Your institution determines eligibility, borrowing rules and catalog; Kanopy does not provide universal access. |
| Hoopla | Library-borrowed films and TV plus audiobooks, comics, e-books and music. | Requires a participating library account. Borrowing limits and available titles are set by that library. |
| YouTube | Officially uploaded films, documentaries, classic TV and identified ad-supported free movies. | Use studio, distributor or other official channels and YouTube’s identified free selections. A title appearing in general search is not proof that an upload is licensed; see Tom’s Guide’s legal-streaming guidance. |
| Crackle | Free, legal, ad-supported movies and TV. | The catalog rotates, so a film available today may leave later. Current listings include Crackle among free services: Digital Citizen. |
| Xumo Play | Free live channels and on-demand programming. | It is a FAST (free ad-supported television) service, better suited to channel browsing than to replacing a huge searchable movie index. |
| Fawesome | Free legal movie and TV streaming. | Current sources identify the service but do not establish a universal catalog size, subscription tier or single navigation path. |
| FilmRise | Free legal movies and television programming. | Catalog and interface can differ across web, mobile and connected-TV versions; no single universal catalog is established. |
| Crunchyroll | Legal anime and related streaming, with some free viewing. | Do not assume the entire catalog is free. The available evidence identifies Crunchyroll as a free option without making every title or episode free. |
| Rakuten Viki | International television and film, especially Asian programming. | Some viewing is free, but title, language and territory availability vary. No claim that every title is free or available in the United States is warranted. |
| Internet Archive | Freely accessible films and other video material. | It is not a commercial FAST catalog. Each item’s availability depends on rights status and upload permissions; check the individual record. |
| Peacock’s free tier | A selection of free movies and shows within Peacock. | Peacock is not entirely free. Current guides distinguish its free tier from paid plans; available programming can change. |
These services are drawn from current listings including Digital Citizen, TotalMedia and Tom’s Guide. None guarantees a permanent catalog: films and episodes rotate as licensing changes, as documented by TechRadar.
Which alternative fits your viewing?
For the largest general free selection
Try Tubi, Pluto TV, The Roku Channel or Plex first. They combine recognizable movies and series with advertising. Pluto TV and Xumo Play emphasize live channels; Tubi and Plex are more natural starting points when you already know what you want to watch.

For documentaries, classics and independent cinema
Check Kanopy through your library or university before creating accounts elsewhere. Hoopla is another library option and also provides books, comics, music and audiobooks. Internet Archive can be useful for public-domain and otherwise rights-cleared material, but evaluate each item’s rights information individually.
For anime or international series
Crunchyroll and Rakuten Viki are the focused choices in this list. Their free availability is selective, and regional licensing means the same title may not appear for every viewer.

For a specific title that disappeared
Search the title across several services rather than assuming one catalog is comprehensive. A rotating catalog can move from one provider to another, and a result on YouTube should be opened only when the uploader is official or the listing is clearly identified as an authorized free selection.
How to watch without paying
- Check your region. Catalogs, channels and free tiers are territory-dependent. Confirm the title on the service’s own site or app before relying on a third-party list.
- Decide whether you can use ads. Tubi and Plex explicitly fund free viewing with ad breaks; other FAST services use the same general model.
- Prepare the right account. Kanopy needs a participating library card or university login, and Hoopla needs a participating library account. Some other services may let you browse without an account but request one for watchlists or playback.
- Use the official app or domain. Avoid pop-up download prompts, browser extensions, “mirrors” and streams that ask for payment-card details to unlock a supposedly free film.
- Recheck availability. If a title is missing, search another service or your library portal. Free catalogs are licensed and change over time.
Roku and other device access
On a Roku player or Roku TV, open Home → Free or Home → Featured Free to browse free movies and shows. Selecting a title can launch the app that supplies it, rather than playing inside Roku’s own interface. The Roku support page documents this behavior at support.roku.com.

- Compact without compromises: Our sleek design won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, so you can switch from streaming to gaming with ease. Plus, it’s designed to stay hidden behind your TV, keeping wires neatly out of sight
The Roku Channel itself also works through web browsers, smartphones and multiple non-Roku TV interfaces, so “Roku-only” descriptions are outdated. Tubi’s official platform list includes web, mobile, major streaming players, game consoles and selected smart-TV brands; see Tubi’s welcome page.
What “free” does—and does not—mean
- Free is not automatically ad-free. Advertising is the trade-off for most commercial services in this list.
- Free is not always account-free. Library authentication is mandatory for Kanopy and Hoopla, and paid services may place only a subset of titles behind a free tier.
- Free is not permanent. Licensing changes can remove a movie without notice.
- Search visibility is not a license. On YouTube and Internet Archive, inspect the uploader or item rights instead of treating every result as authorized.
Names and claims to treat cautiously
Amazon Freevee
“Freevee” should not automatically be presented as a current standalone service name. Current results describe its free, ad-supported content as moving into Prime Video selections such as Watch For Free. If you are looking for that programming, check the current Prime Video interface rather than assuming a separate Freevee app still represents the service.
