Silent Hill: Ascension came to Android on October 31, 2023. It is now a completed 22-episode interactive horror series: the app offers episodes to watch, but its audience decisions and puzzles are no longer active. Genvid, the project’s producer, described it as neither a video game nor a traditional choose-your-own-adventure story. Calling it “hardly a game” is fair shorthand for its format; calling it a conventional Silent Hill game would be misleading.
What Silent Hill: Ascension was
Ascension is a new story in the Silent Hill universe, not a port or remake of an earlier game. Produced with Konami, Genvid, Bad Robot Games and Behaviour Interactive, it was designed as an episodic, streamed narrative in which an audience could influence events together.
The story follows the Hernandez family in a declining Pennsylvania town and the Johansen family in a Norwegian fishing village. Their stories involve family trauma, suspicious deaths, cult activity and supernatural threats. The project was presented by Genvid and Konami as part of the franchise’s canon, but it is best treated as a distinct story rather than described as a direct prequel to the original games. Genvid’s FAQ explains the intended format and its relationship to the series.
How the original interactivity worked
During its original run, viewers watched streamed, real-time-rendered scenes and took part in community decisions, missions and puzzles. The idea was that collective participation could help or hinder characters and shape their circumstances. Genvid said the audience would determine one shared, canonical outcome.

That is different from a conventional branching game. You did not take direct control of a protagonist, explore Silent Hill at your own pace or build a personal save file whose choices created a separate route. You watched a developing story and contributed to a larger audience’s decisions. Some viewers could simply watch; participation was an added layer, not the usual play loop of a survival-horror game.
Genvid calls this broader approach “massively interactive entertainment,” a blend of streamed storytelling and game-like audience participation. The format’s defining feature was the shared crowd, not individual control. Genvid’s overview of its model describes that distinction.

Why it is “hardly a game”
The label depends on what you mean by game. By the creator’s own account, it was not a video game: Genvid CEO Jacob Navok explicitly made that distinction in the project FAQ. Its audience voting, puzzles and missions were game-like, but the central experience was watching narrative sequences rather than controlling a character.

What Android users get now
The Android app launched on October 31, 2023, and the series has since ended. The current Google Play listing says all 22 episodes are available to watch, but that decisions and puzzles are no longer available. In practical terms, a new viewer can watch the completed series; they cannot recreate the original live audience experience or influence its outcome.
The listing describes viewing as free, while also marking the app as containing ads and in-app purchases. “Free to watch” therefore does not mean free of advertising or in-app purchase features. Store availability and device compatibility can vary by region and Android device, so check the listing for your own account and phone before downloading. The listing also carries a Mature 17+ rating. Nothing in the current listing establishes how long the app will remain available, so it is not wise to assume indefinite access.

Who might enjoy it?
- Worth considering: viewers curious about new Silent Hill characters and lore, experimental horror storytelling, or a completed series they can watch on demand.
- Probably not what you want: a player looking for exploration, combat, inventory management, direct puzzle-solving, or individual choices in a conventional mobile horror game.
The format also changes how to think about agency. In the original run, participation was collective: the audience helped determine a shared version of events, not a private ending for each viewer. Now that the decisions and puzzles have ended, the app preserves the episodes but not that central participatory feature.
Verdict
Silent Hill: Ascension is best understood as an episodic horror show delivered through an app, with game-like participation layered onto its original live run. The Android release is real, but it happened in 2023; today the app is primarily a way to watch the completed 22-episode series. If you expect a playable Silent Hill game, this is not one.
