The Independent reports that Brolin, who played Matt Graver in the first two films, said the third installment “is happening” and that production will begin “soon.” The report also says he is set to return. The comments are relayed from a ScreenRant interview; the report provides those short phrases rather than a longer statement.

“Soon” does not identify a start date. In the August 24, 2026 report, no director or cast beyond Brolin’s reported return had been announced, and Taylor Sheridan’s involvement as writer had not been confirmed. The report gives no release date, and it does not establish that filming has begun.
What is known about Sicario 3’s creative team
The update does not confirm who will direct the third film or whether Sheridan will write it. Sheridan wrote both released installments, but that history alone is not confirmation of his role on the new film. Beyond Brolin’s reported return, the report does not identify a confirmed cast.

How the first two films set up the franchise
The original Sicario was released in 2015, written by Sheridan and directed by Denis Villeneuve. The 2018 follow-up, Sicario: Day of the Soldado, was also written by Sheridan, directed by Stefano Sollima, and brought back Brolin and Benicio del Toro as Matt Graver and Alejandro.
Sollima described Day of the Soldado as a standalone story rather than a conventional direct continuation: it follows two characters from the first film in a different story and, he said, can be enjoyed without having seen the original. Sony’s official synopsis says Graver calls on Alejandro as the cartel conflict escalates; Alejandro kidnaps a kingpin’s daughter, whose fate strains the relationship between the two men.

The first film arrived in 2015 and the second in 2018. The latest update cited here was reported in August 2026, eight calendar years after the sequel’s release year. A “seven years later” description depends on its reference date; it is not the exact interval between the 2018 sequel and this 2026 report.
Where to catch up while waiting
Sony lists the existing 2018 sequel, Sicario: Day of the Soldado, on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD through its film page. Those formats are for the released sequel, not Sicario 3. The update provides no confirmed streaming service or home-video details for the third film.
