It depends on your tween. Avatar: Fire and Ash is rated PG-13 in the United States and runs 3 hours 15 minutes, with sustained fantasy violence, grief and death, suicide-related material, and other mature content. That rating is not a universal age threshold or a guarantee of suitability. Consider your child’s sensitivities, check the guidance where you live, and review the content details below before deciding.

What parents should know at a glance

What the ratings mean—and where they apply

Ratings differ by country, so do not convert one system’s label into another’s or treat any rating as a universal age rule. Check the cinema listing or classification authority for your location.

Jurisdiction Classification or guidance What it tells you
United States PG-13, according to 20th Century Studios The studio page gives this rating but does not state a detailed U.S. rating descriptor in the information cited here. 20th Century Studios
Australia M; consumer advice: “Mature themes, violence and coarse language” The Australian Classification Board classified the film on 2 December 2025. Its detailed information also discusses weapons, injuries, suicide-related material, a hallucinogen and discreet sexual references. Australian Classification Board
New Zealand Classification Office content page, cross-rated by the Film and Video Labelling Body The page’s labels list violence and offensive language; its detailed warning describes additional content. New Zealand Classification Office
United Kingdom BBFC content advice Advice lists violence, threat, injury detail, brief suicide references, drugs and language. The BBFC record includes a 197-minute cinema version and a physical-media classification entry dated 11 June 2026. BBFC

Common Sense Media’s review summaries offer editorial age guidance of 14+ from parent reviews and 13+ from kid reviews. These are not official classifications and should be treated as another perspective, not a rule for every child.

How intense is the content?

Avatar: Fire and Ash - Blu-ray + Digital
  • Return to Pandora for the third chapter of Marine turned Na’vi leader Jake Sully and his family. Reeling from one death, the Sullys set out to prevent another — aided by the Wind Traders. But on the way, they’re attacked by the Ash People, who blame Eywa for their ravaged home. Warning: Some flashing-lights scenes may affect photosensitive viewers.

Violence, injury and peril

The New Zealand Classification Office describes attacks on traders and deaths as characters fall from ships, are shot with arrows or are burned. Its notes also describe battles with blood injuries. Australian guidance cites hand-to-hand fighting and weapons including automatic rifles, explosives, spears, knives, and bows and arrows, sometimes accompanied by blood effects and injury detail. The BBFC notes extended battles and sustained threat, including children being chased or captured and a boy experiencing breathing difficulties. New Zealand Classification Office; Australian Classification Board; BBFC.

Bereavement, suicide-related material and death

The Sully family is coping with the death of Neteyam. New Zealand’s warning describes a character running away and seemingly wanting to die alone, and says the storyline may upset viewers affected by suicide. Australia notes an undetailed visual reference to suicidal behaviour. New Zealand also describes a pregnant character who is badly injured in battle, gives birth safely, and then dies. These details may matter especially to a tween who has experienced bereavement, suicide or a traumatic birth in their family or community. New Zealand Classification Office; Australian Classification Board.

Language, drugs and sexual material

New Zealand cites very occasional strong language, including the f-word, the s-word and “bitch”; Australia records one use of the f-word and multiple other coarse terms. New Zealand describes an ash-like substance used to induce a trance and a drug-induced sexual montage with limited nudity. Australia describes an unnamed hallucinogen and discreet sexual references. How to decide for your tween

  1. Check local advice first. Read your country’s rating and, where available, the detailed content notes. A short label may not make clear which themes or scenes could concern your child.
  2. Think about your child’s particular sensitivities. Consider how they respond to combat, threatened or injured children, grief and death, suicide-related themes, childbirth, language, drug references and sexual material. A tween’s age alone cannot tell you how they will respond.
  3. Be realistic about the runtime. At just over three hours, the film is a substantial sit. Consider whether your child can stay comfortable and engaged for that long, including the cinema’s usual trailers and any break arrangements.
  4. Talk before you go if a theme is relevant. You can explain that the story includes loss and intense battle scenes, ask what your child wants to know, and decide together whether to see it now, wait, or skip it.
  5. Plan to watch together if that would help. Being there gives you the chance to offer context or check in afterward. If you expect a particular scene could be distressing, consider whether seeing it together is enough support—or whether choosing another film is the better option.

Is it appropriate for all tweens?

No single answer fits every tween. The strongest reasons to pause are a child’s sensitivity to intense violence or peril, recent or personal experience with suicide or bereavement, concern about traumatic childbirth, or difficulty sitting through a very long film. If those are not concerns, the local classification and detailed warnings can still help you decide whether the content suits your family. Classification notes describe content; they do not establish how any particular child will be affected.
