The supporting cast includes actors portraying campaign advisers, political allies, family members and rival George Wallace. Chisholm’s congressional milestones are documented history; the film’s individual scenes are dramatic portrayals and should not be treated as verified events unless independently corroborated.

Who was Shirley Chisholm?
Chisholm was born in Brooklyn on November 30, 1924. She was elected to the U.S. House in 1968 from a newly created Brooklyn district and became the first African-American woman elected to Congress when the 91st Congress convened in January 1969. She served as a New York Democrat from January 3, 1969, through January 3, 1983, a total of seven terms.
In 1972, Chisholm sought the Democratic presidential nomination. She did not win it. The House’s historical account describes the campaign as a longshot backed by a shoestring budget and volunteers, while also emphasizing its political significance. Chisholm had previously been a teacher and a New York state legislator, and she explored a presidential run in 1971 before launching her campaign in earnest in Florida in 1972.

What is the film based on, and how accurate is it?
Shirley is a dramatic film about Chisholm’s 1972 campaign, written and directed by John Ridley. Netflix reports that producer Reina King said the filmmakers drew on Chisholm’s books, including her 1970 autobiography Unbought and Unbossed and The Good Fight, as well as documentaries, news footage and articles. Netflix also says Representative Barbara Lee visited the set.
That production account explains what informed the filmmakers; it does not independently confirm every scene, conversation or relationship shown on screen. The U.S. House’s historical materials substantiate Chisholm’s election, congressional service and presidential bid, but do not amount to a scene-by-scene accuracy audit. Treat specific dramatic moments as the film’s portrayal unless another reliable historical source confirms them.

Chisholm’s slogans and political legacy
Netflix describes “Unbought and Unbossed” as both the title of Chisholm’s 1970 autobiography and a campaign slogan. The House’s history of the Florida effort also documents “Give Your Chair to a Lady.” The phrases belong to different documented contexts; there is no need to treat one as the sole slogan associated with her campaign.
The House’s account presents the 1972 run as a catalyst for change despite its defeat. In its history of Chisholm’s arrival in Congress, the House attributes this statement to her: “I have no intention of just sitting quietly and observing,” she said. “I intend to focus attention on the nation’s problems.”
