Shifting Gears is most likely to work for viewers who enjoy Tim Allen’s familiar gruff, opinionated sitcom persona—and who want to see Kat Dennings give it some pushback. The first two episodes offer a likable father-daughter sparring match and moments of tenderness, but critics also found predictable turns, uneven jokes, and political material that can misfire. That is a qualified recommendation based on the opening episodes, not a verdict on the entire series.
What is Shifting Gears about?
Tim Allen plays Matt, a stubborn widower who owns a classic-car restoration shop. His estranged daughter Riley, played by Kat Dennings, moves into his home with her children, forcing the family to live together while they try to repair their relationship. ABC frames the family’s reconciliation as the emotional counterpart to Matt’s work restoring cars. The series is produced by 20th Television.
The main cast also includes Seann William Scott, Daryl “Chill” Mitchell, Maxwell Simkins, and Barrett Margolis. ABC’s series page has the official premise, cast information, and episode guide.
What works in the opening episodes?
Allen and Dennings have a clear comic dynamic
The central appeal is the friction between Matt and Riley: he is blunt and set in his ways, while she is willing to challenge him. In his review of the first two episodes, TVLine’s Dave Nemetz singled out Dennings for holding her own in their arguments. Their exchanges give the show a dependable source of comic conflict, and the pairing is more engaging when the characters are sparring than when the jokes feel familiar.

Family conflict has room for tenderness
The show is not only about disagreements. Nemetz noted that grief-related scenes lend the opening episodes some warmth, grounding the family’s clashes in the loss they share. That emotional thread gives the reconciliation story a reason to matter beyond the setup of a widowed father and his returning daughter.
What may not work for every viewer?
The same familiar approach that will appeal to Allen fans may feel predictable to viewers looking for a fresh sitcom. Nemetz’s C+ review identified flat jokes and foreseeable turns, alongside political rants that occasionally land badly. Robert Lloyd’s Los Angeles Times review likewise places the show in recognizable multicamera sitcom territory, with Matt and Riley’s generational and political differences driving much of the conflict.

Lloyd also found the second of the first two episodes less focused than the first. The opening batch therefore shows both the show’s basic comic engine and a risk: if Allen’s familiar persona and pointed disagreements are not your thing, the repetition may outweigh the warmer family moments.

The available premiere-era reviews cover only the first two episodes. They support a judgment about the opening—especially the Allen-Dennings dynamic and familiar sitcom style—but do not establish how consistently the series develops across its seasons.
Who should watch Shifting Gears?
- Give it a try if you enjoy Allen’s gruff comic persona, father-daughter banter, and family-reconciliation stories.
- Be more cautious if you prefer subtle writing, less familiar sitcom rhythms, or comedy that avoids political arguments.
- Judge it on the pairing: the strongest element identified in the premiere review is Dennings pushing back against Allen, not a novel sitcom premise.
