She said she had been told to sing it in English, but chose instead to perform “El Pendón Estrellado,” the official Spanish translation. The moment took place amid Los Angeles protests over immigration raids and quickly drew attention.
What happened at Dodger Stadium?
Nezza is the stage name of Dominican-American singer Vanessa Hernández. On June 14, 2025, she sang the U.S. national anthem before the Dodgers–Giants game at Dodger Stadium. NBC Los Angeles reported that 51,548 fans attended the game and identified the song as “El Pendón Estrellado.” NBC Los Angeles’ report covered the performance.
The Associated Press reported that her rendition lasted about 90 seconds and spread rapidly online. It came as protests and public anger over immigration raids were unfolding in Los Angeles. In AP’s account, Nezza described the performance as a way to show solidarity and said she had no regrets. The Associated Press report placed the performance in that context.
Why did Nezza sing in Spanish?
Nezza’s explanation was that the language mattered in the moment. She said she wanted to express support for people affected by the immigration-enforcement actions and to affirm that they had a voice. Her choice was therefore both a rendition of the national anthem and a public statement during a period of heightened tension in Los Angeles.

The Spanish lyrics were not an unofficial rewrite for the occasion. “El Pendón Estrellado” is the official Spanish translation of “The Star-Spangled Banner,” according to the Associated Press. The U.S. government commissioned it in 1945 from Peruvian-American composer Clotilde Arias under President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s administration.
Did the Dodgers tell Nezza not to sing in Spanish?
According to Nezza’s account, a Dodgers representative told her the anthem would be performed in English. The Los Angeles Times reported that she later posted video discussing that instruction. That is her account of what she was told; it should not be treated as proof of a publicly documented Dodgers policy about anthem language. The Los Angeles Times report describes her account and the video.
The Dodgers’ public response, quoted by the Associated Press, was: “There were no consequences or hard feelings from the Dodgers regarding her performance.” That statement addresses the aftermath, but does not independently confirm the details of the reported conversation before the game.
