The cause was attributed to complications from diabetes by her friend and publicist, Gary Springer, as reported by the Associated Press. The report does not present an independently examined medical record.
Why was Duvall known as a performer beyond The Shining?
Her lasting collaboration with Robert Altman
Duvall’s film career began with an encounter that shaped much of her early work. In 1970, members of Altman’s crew met her at a Houston party while preparing Brewster McCloud; Altman cast her, beginning a continuing collaboration. She appeared in his films including McCabe & Mrs. Miller, Thieves Like Us, Nashville, Three Women, and Popeye.

Her performance in Altman’s Three Women earned her the Best Actress award at Cannes, according to the Associated Press. Duvall recalled Altman’s advice in a 1977 New York Times interview: “Don’t take yourself seriously.”
Wendy Torrance in The Shining
In Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 film The Shining, Duvall played Wendy Torrance, whose fear-stricken face became inseparable from the film’s famous image of an axe breaking through a door. The part made her widely recognizable, but it was one role in a career that also included work with Altman and other directors.

Production stories about the film need careful attribution. The Associated Press said the shoot lasted 13 months and that one scene was “reportedly performed in 127 takes.” In a 1981 People interview, Duvall recalled crying during production for “12 hours a day for weeks on end.” That is her recollection, not an independently verified measurement. She also described the personal cost of the role: “I will never give that much again,” Duvall said. “If you want to get into pain and call it art, go ahead, but not with me.”
The Associated Press cautioned that theories linking the shoot to Duvall’s later retreat from public life were incorrect; the production anecdotes do not establish such a cause.

Children’s television producer and host
In the 1980s, Duvall expanded her work behind the camera, producing and hosting children’s programs. Her projects included Faerie Tale Theatre, Tall Tales & Legends, and Shelley Duvall’s Bedtime Stories. These series are an important part of her legacy, distinct from her screen acting.
What happened to Duvall after Hollywood?
Duvall moved back to Texas in the mid-1990s and largely withdrew from Hollywood after Manna from Heaven, around 2002, according to the Associated Press. A 2016 television appearance on Dr. Phil was widely criticized; it should not be treated as a complete account of her life or as evidence that The Shining caused her departure from public view.

She returned to acting in the independent horror film The Forest Hills, filmed in 2022 and premiering in early 2023, the Associated Press reported. Speaking to People at the time, Duvall said: “Acting again — it’s so much fun,” and added, “It enriches your life.”

Duvall was born July 7, 1949, in Fort Worth, Texas, and was the oldest of four, according to the Associated Press. She died two days after her 75th birthday. Her career moved between Altman’s ensemble films, Kubrick’s horror classic, and television made for children. The indelible image of Wendy Torrance remains part of her story, but it does not contain the whole of it.
