How Duvall began working with Robert Altman
In 1970, members of Altman’s crew met Duvall at a party in Houston while she was attending junior college. They introduced her to the director, who cast her in Brewster McCloud. That first role began a sustained collaboration that helped define her screen career.
Duvall appeared in several more Altman films, including McCabe & Mrs. Miller, Thieves Like Us, Nashville, 3 Women and Popeye. In a 1977 interview with The New York Times, as quoted by the Associated Press, she said of Altman: “He offers me damn good roles.” She added that the parts were unlike one another and recalled his advice: “Don’t take yourself seriously.” Associated Press reporting.

The roles most associated with Shelley Duvall
| Film | Role | Director and genre |
|---|---|---|
| The Shining (1980) | Wendy Torrance, wife of Jack Torrance | Stanley Kubrick; horror |
| Popeye (1980) | Olive Oyl, opposite Robin Williams | Robert Altman; musical comedy |
In The Shining, Duvall played Wendy, caught with her son in the isolated Overlook Hotel as her husband, played by Jack Nicholson, becomes dangerous. The film’s image of her terrified face beside Nicholson’s axe at a door became one of its most enduring scenes. Popeye showed a very different register: Duvall played the lanky, expressive Olive Oyl in Altman’s musical comedy.
Beyond Wendy Torrance and Olive Oyl
Duvall’s career included acclaimed work beyond the two roles that made her widely recognizable. In Altman’s 3 Women (1977), she played Millie Lammoreaux and won the Cannes Film Festival’s best actress prize. Her other Altman films included Nashville, a key part of the director’s ensemble work.

She also moved behind the camera and into television, producing and hosting children’s programming. Her projects included Faerie Tale Theatre, Tall Tales & Legends and Shelley Duvall’s Bedtime Stories. After a long period away from screen acting, she returned in the independent horror film The Forest Hills, which premiered in 2023. Los Angeles Times obituary.
What Duvall said about filming The Shining
Duvall later described the production of The Shining as physically and emotionally demanding. The Washington Post reported that the shoot lasted 56 weeks and quoted her account of working six days a week, 12 to 16 hours a day, for a year and a month. The Associated Press reported that she said she cried “12 hours a day for weeks on end”; it also noted that one scene was reportedly performed in 127 takes. These are attributed accounts of the production, not evidence that every day followed the same pattern or that the filming caused her later health problems.

Her recollections were not uniformly unhappy: the Associated Press also reported that she remembered happy moments on set, including playing chess with Kubrick between scenes. The Washington Post’s account of the film’s 56-week shoot cites The Hollywood Reporter; its account of Duvall’s hours draws on a 1991 Los Angeles Times interview. The Washington Post obituary.

In its account of Pauline Kael’s New Yorker review of Popeye, The Washington Post quoted the critic calling Duvall “the closest thing we’ve ever come to a female Buster Keaton.” Kael also wrote that Duvall “doesn’t seem to owe anything to anyone,” describing an acting style she considered singular. The comparison captures a quality that linked very different performances: Duvall could make a character’s physicality and reactions memorable without making them feel like variations on the same role.
