When and where was Shane Warne’s public memorial?
The memorial was held at the MCG in Melbourne on 30 March 2022, after a private funeral earlier that month. The Melbourne Cricket Ground’s 2022 timeline records 55,000 people attending.
The event was planned as a two-hour service beginning at 7pm AEDT. In a 30 March 2022 update, Cricket Australia said 50,000 seats had already been taken and 15,000 more tickets had been released. Those were advance ticketing figures, not a final count of people who attended.
Why was the Great Southern Stand renamed?
During the memorial, the Great Southern Stand was formally renamed the Shane Warne Stand. Warne’s children Brooke, Jackson and Summer unveiled the name, according to the Melbourne Cricket Club’s 31 March 2022 report.

The stand had been built along the MCG’s southern boundary in 1991–92. The tribute connected Warne’s name permanently with a ground central to his Melbourne cricket career.
What made the MCG significant to Warne?
Warne became a Melbourne Cricket Club member in 2001 and an honorary cricket member in 2012. His MCG milestones included taking a hat-trick in the 1994 Boxing Day Test against England and becoming the first bowler to reach 700 Test wickets, when he dismissed Andrew Strauss at the ground during the 2006 Boxing Day Test. A statue of Warne was unveiled outside Gate 2 in December 2011. The MCC recounts these achievements in its 5 March 2022 tribute.

How did the public memorial differ from the private funeral?
The MCG service followed a private funeral in Melbourne on 20 March 2022. The International Cricket Council reported that approximately 80 family members and close friends attended the private service. It was a separate, intimate farewell before the larger public memorial later that month.

The MCG’s retrospective timeline gives the attendance as 55,000. Earlier ticketing updates describe different stages of access, not competing final attendance totals: Cricket Australia reported on 22 March that more than 42,000 free tickets had been claimed in the opening hours, then said on 30 March that 50,000 seats were taken and 15,000 additional tickets released. These figures should not be added together or mistaken for the MCG’s final attendance figure.
