In a November 2023 PEOPLE interview, Shannen Doherty said she still wanted to live, love, create and make a difference while living with stage 4 breast cancer that had spread to her bones. The story was republished after her death on July 13, 2024, at age 53; it is a record of what she shared in 2023, not a current health update.
What Doherty said about embracing life
Doherty rejected the idea that a cancer diagnosis meant she was finished making plans or contributing creatively. “I’m not done with living. I’m not done with loving. I’m not done with creating. I’m not done with hopefully changing things for the better,” she told PEOPLE in the November 2023 interview.
She also spoke about the future with a sense of possibility: “My greatest memory is yet to come.” Her words framed hope not as a claim about what would happen medically, but as her own determination to keep imagining and making room for what was ahead.
Why she spoke about work and cancer
Doherty challenged assumptions that people with cancer cannot remain active or want to work. “We are people who want to work and embrace life and keep moving forward,” she said. The statement describes her perspective; it should not be taken as a universal account of how every person with cancer feels or what they can do.

Alongside work and creativity, she described a daily practice of gratitude and prayer: “I wake up and go to bed thanking God, praying for the things that matter to me without asking for too much.”
The interview’s health context and timeline
At the time of the PEOPLE interview, the cover story described Doherty’s stage 4 breast cancer as having spread to her bones. Earlier in 2023, she had also publicly discussed cancer in her brain. Those were separate disclosures; the November cover story is not a present-day medical report. CBS News reported on her discussion of bone involvement in 2023: Shannen Doherty’s account of cancer spreading to her bones.

PEOPLE’s story appeared in November 2023. After Doherty died in July 2024, the interview was republished as her last PEOPLE cover story before her death. The retrospective preserves her words in the context in which she said them, rather than presenting them as a new interview.

The PEOPLE interview was republished by Yahoo Entertainment on July 14, 2024: Shannen Doherty opened up about wanting to “embrace life” in her last PEOPLE cover story before her death. The original coverage referred to the issue as PEOPLE’s latest at the time and said it would be on newsstands that Friday; that does not establish whether the print issue is available now.
