Shelley Quartermaine, who performs as Shelley Q, landed the lead role of Karissa in the thriller 1 Million Followers after moving from rural Western Australia to Sydney, practicing an American accent during lockdown and auditioning in a worldwide casting process. Her path to the film, as she recounted it in a June 2022 PerthNow interview, began far from Hollywood.
From Narrogin to a worldwide audition
Quartermaine grew up in Narrogin, Western Australia. She moved to Sydney about a year before PerthNow published its interview with her on 17 June 2022, hoping to enter the acting industry. The pandemic interrupted that plan: she told the outlet she spent six months in lockdown.
She used that time to work on the American accent she would need for Karissa, an American country girl. Quartermaine said she practiced for three hours every day over five months, describing her aim this way: “I decided I was going to come out (of lockdown) fluent American. So every single day, I would wake up, I would do it for three hours every single day for five months,” she told PerthNow.
Her account of the casting process was similarly quick-moving. After a worldwide casting audition, she said, she received a callback within days and met the director on Zoom the following week. The director offered her the title lead and told her she would leave in four months. These details are Quartermaine’s recollection in the interview, rather than independently verified production records.

What role does she play in 1 Million Followers?
Quartermaine plays Karissa, described in the 2022 interview as an American country girl. The film’s later listing identifies Shelley Q as Karissa. Box Office Mojo’s synopsis describes a small-town girl invited by a popular influencer to a Thailand mansion, where the group works to build Karissa’s following to a million before a sponsor’s identity changes the situation. That is the listing’s summary of the premise.
Quartermaine called the film a “social media-based thriller” in her interview. She said the production filmed in Phuket, Thailand, and Calgary, Canada, earlier in 2022. She also described the set as immersive: the cast stayed at the same hotel and filmed on location. Quartermaine said she had never left Australia before taking the film job: “I actually had never left Australia.”
