Severance’s Penultimate Episode Is Both Heartbreaking and Fascinating

In “The After Hours,” Dylan’s paper-ring proposal and Irving’s departure make the penultimate episode painfully personal, while Mark’s final question revives the mystery of Gemma.

“The After Hours,” the ninth episode of Severance season two, is a penultimate chapter built around painful choices and unresolved questions. Dylan proposes to Gretchen with a paper ring before choosing to quit Lumon; Burt helps Irving leave Kier; and Mark’s final words return the story to Gemma’s fate. The episode aired on Apple TV+ and was recapped by Germain Lussier for io9/Gizmodo on March 14, 2025.

Why “The After Hours” feels like a penultimate episode

The episode advances several storylines, but its emotional force comes from characters reaching decisions before they understand all the consequences. Dylan’s proposal cannot undo the divide between his innie and outie. Irving gets a chance to leave Kier, though Lumon’s intentions for him remain unclear. And Mark learns that Cobel believes Gemma will die when Cold Harbor is complete, only for the episode to end with his innie asking whether she is alive.

That combination makes the hour both heartbreaking and fascinating: relationships shift decisively, while the central mysteries stay open for the finale.

Helly’s confrontation with Jame remains unresolved

The story opens with Helena at her family home with her father, Lumon CEO Jame Eagan. At work, Helly searches for Mark and follows Irving’s directions toward the Exports Hall. Jame confronts her with the accusation, “You tricked me.” The episode connects Helly to several other threads, but does not explain what Jame means or resolve the tension between them.

Miss Huang’s reassignment comes with a forced sacrifice

Milchick tells Miss Huang that her Wintertide Fellowship is ending. She will move from her parents’ home to the Gunnel Eagan Empathy Center in Svalbard. As part of the transition, he requires her to smash her ring-toss game as a “material sacrifice.”

The scene makes the cost of the reassignment tangible: Huang has to destroy an object associated with her home and childhood. What role she will have at the center, however, is not established.

Dylan’s proposal cannot bridge the innie-outie divide

Gretchen tells outie Dylan that she kissed his innie for “about a minute.” Later, she tells innie Dylan she cannot continue seeing him at the expense of his outie. His answer is a paper ring and a proposal: “I love you, I made this for you, I can give you a life.”

It is a desperate offer from someone with no control over the life he wants to share. Gretchen leaves, and Dylan goes back to work. He fills out a resignation form, marking reasons that include “freedom, anger, fatigue, loneliness, guilt, shame” and “annoyance.” The list suggests there is no single feeling behind his decision to leave Lumon.

One line makes the division between innies and outies feel especially fragile. Dylan asks Helly, “If we’re so different from our outies, how come we couldn’t tell when you were gone?” The question does not settle how much the innies know about one another, but it underscores how little certainty they have about the lives beyond their own.

Burt helps Irving get out of Kier

Burt appears at Irving’s apartment and has found the notes Irving wrote about him. He takes Irving to a train station and buys him a ticket to the end of the line. Irving leaves Kier with Radar.

The action reads as Burt defying Lumon, but the reason for the company’s interest in Irving—and what it intends to do with him—remains uncertain. The departure is concrete; its larger consequences are not.

Milchick pushes back, then chooses to trust Mark

Drummond belittles Milchick’s performance, including his use of words that are too big. Milchick responds with “devour feculence,” then clarifies: “It means, eat shit.” The exchange is a rare moment of open resistance from someone who usually enforces Lumon’s demands.

Later, Mark asks for a day off for “life stuff.” Milchick agrees, on the condition that Mark returns the next day. His decision to trust Mark gives the episode a small counterpoint to its coercion and losses: for once, Milchick allows a personal need to count.

Cobel’s warning makes Cold Harbor a countdown

Cobel tells Mark and Devon she believes Gemma will die when Cold Harbor is completed. She takes them to the cabin at the birthing retreat, where Mark’s innie can be reached. The project is shown at 96% at 9 a.m., adding urgency to the warning without explaining the full process or confirming that Cobel is right.

The episode leaves the meaning of “Cold Harbor” and the fate of Gemma unresolved. Its final exchange sharpens the immediate question: Devon asks innie Mark whether he remembers what he last said to her, and he answers, “She’s alive?” The line echoes the end of season one and returns the story to the mystery of whether Gemma can be saved.

The Twilight Zone reference is clear; its Lumon meaning is not

Cobel’s cryptic exchange with a guard includes “Miss Marsha White,” “ninth floor,” “specialties department” and a “gold thimble.” These details echo “The After Hours,” a 1960 episode of The Twilight Zone in which Miss Marsha White visits the ninth-floor specialties department looking for a gold thimble.

The allusion is recognizable, but the episode does not establish what the references mean within Lumon or how they connect to its plans. The gold thimble remains a clue, not an answer.

What the episode leaves for the finale

By the closing scene, major choices have been made, but their outcomes are still uncertain. Dylan has decided to resign after Gretchen rejects the relationship; Irving has left Kier with Burt’s help; and Mark’s innie has learned that Gemma may be in danger. Helly’s encounter with Jame and Cobel’s coded references add further questions without resolving them.

That is the episode’s central tension: its characters move forward, sometimes at real emotional cost, while the audience is left waiting to learn what their choices will mean.
