What happens in “Chikhai Bardo”?
After the reintegration events of the previous episode, outie Mark collapses. His memories open the way into his relationship with Gemma, while the present-day story follows Gemma inside Lumon. The episode alternates between the life they built together and the experiments that now keep her confined.
The two strands change how each other reads: the flashbacks give emotional weight to Mark’s search for Gemma, while Gemma’s present shows what Lumon has done to the person he believes he lost.

How Mark and Gemma met and built a life together
A meeting at a blood drive
In the flashbacks, Mark and Gemma meet at a blood drive at Ganz College. Both are professors: Mark teaches history and Gemma Russian literature. Their early connection grows into a relationship, marriage, and a shared home. TIME’s recap notes a waterdrop symbol on medical equipment at the blood drive, a visual clue that Lumon may have intersected with their lives earlier than the couple understood. The symbol alone does not establish when, why, or how Lumon became involved.
Fertility struggles and loss
Their memories are not an uncomplicated romance. Mark and Gemma face miscarriage and fertility treatment, including IVF. The flashbacks bring that struggle close to the moment Mark is told Gemma died in a car accident. The loss is part of what makes the present-day revelation so devastating: she did not die, but the episode does not yet tell us how much she knew about Lumon’s role in her life.

What Lumon is doing to Gemma
Gemma is alive at Lumon headquarters, where she is sent through different rooms and scenarios. The episode shows room-specific versions of Gemma with distinct severed identities. Among the trials described in recaps are simulated plane turbulence, repetitive Christmas thank-you notes, and a dental procedure. One of those versions is Ms. Casey, the wellness counselor Mark encountered on the severed floor.
The rooms and the changing identities are visible; the precise purpose of the tests is not. It is reasonable to infer that Lumon is studying how Gemma’s severed selves respond to different conditions, but the episode does not confirm the company’s research goal or explain how the trials connect to its wider plan.

Gemma tries to escape, but ends up back on the severed floor
Gemma wants to go home. Dr. Mauer tells her that Mark has remarried and has a child—a lie, according to The Ringer’s recap. Gemma reacts violently, attacking him with a chair, and tries to escape.
She does not get free. By the episode’s end, she is back on the severed floor. Her Ms. Casey identity activates, and Milchick sends her back to the residential floor. Mauer’s assurance that “You will see the world again, and the world will see you” is a promise made to Gemma, not proof that she will be released.

What “Chikhai Bardo” means
The Ringer explains that, in some schools of Buddhism, a bardo is one of six states of being, and describes chikhai bardo as the state immediately following death. The title’s connection to Gemma’s supposed death is a pointed one. This is a limited explanation of the term, not a comprehensive account of Tibetan Buddhist teaching.
What the episode leaves unresolved
- Why Gemma became involved with Lumon: The episode does not establish why she participated or whether she understood the plan.
- What Lumon wants from Mark and Gemma: The waterdrop symbol and other clues invite questions about the company’s earlier involvement, but they do not prove when Gemma was recruited or what Lumon is trying to accomplish.
- What “Cold Harbor” means for Gemma: The episode raises the stakes around the project without explaining its outcome or what it will mean for her.
- Whether Gemma will return to the outside world: Mauer says she will, but the episode offers no confirmation that his promise is true.
That uncertainty is central to the episode’s tension. Its flashbacks make Mark and Gemma’s relationship feel intimate and lived-in; the present-day testing rooms make Gemma’s situation feel controlled and coercive. TV Guide describes the contrast as a tale of two prisons, an interpretation rather than a confirmed statement of the show’s intent.
Episode credits and companion discussion
TV Guide reports that Jessica Lee Gagné, the series’ longtime director of photography, made her directing debut on “Chikhai Bardo.” Series creator Dan Erickson and executive producer Mark Friedman wrote the episode. Asked about directing her first episode, Gagné said: “I went into it a little backwards. It wasn’t my idea to do this.”
For more production context, the official Severance companion podcast episode listed on February 28, 2025, features Ben Stiller and Adam Scott with Dichen Lachman and Gagné. Its discussion includes Lachman’s work as Gemma and Ms. Casey, the couple’s relationship, Ms. Casey’s wig, and Gagné’s directing debut.
