The episode is “What’s for Dinner?”—the penultimate chapter of season one—and it ends with Dylan activating Lumon’s overtime contingency, waking Mark, Helly and Irving outside the office.
“What’s for Dinner?” aired April 1, 2022, runs 46 minutes, and was written by Chris Black and directed by Ben Stiller. Its threads converge on the MDR team’s quarterly quota, Cobel’s loss of authority at Lumon, and the effort to take the innies beyond the severed floor.
Apple TV’s series page describes the thriller’s central divide: workers’ memories are surgically separated between their work and personal lives. This episode tests that boundary in two ways—through Mark and Gemma’s painful failure to recognize one another, and through the innies’ attempt to cross from work into the outside world.
How the MDR team reaches its quota
At work, Helly completes her file, bringing the Macrodata Refinement team to its quarterly goal. That milestone allows the team’s plan to move forward, but Lumon marks it with its own reward: a Waffle Party for Dylan.

Cobel schedules one last wellness session between Mark and Ms. Casey. During it, Ms. Casey says she is being retired. Mark asks whether he can speak to someone on her behalf, but neither recognizes the connection that matters most: Ms. Casey is Gemma, Mark’s wife on the outside.

Cobel watches the session, then sends Ms. Casey to the testing floor. Their separation gives the episode its most intimate cost of severance: Mark tries to help someone he cares about without knowing who she is, while Gemma remains beyond his recognition.

What the episode changes
- The team’s plan has a trigger: Helly’s completed file brings MDR to its quarterly quota.
- Mark and Gemma’s connection remains hidden from them: their final wellness session ends without either recognizing the other.
- Cobel’s position changes: she is fired just as the MDR team’s actions reach beyond the office.
- The ending is a threshold, not a resolution: the overtime contingency wakes the innies outside work, but the episode does not show what they do next.
That parallel gives the penultimate episode its shape. Mark and Gemma are separated even in the same room, while the innies’ separation from the outside is suddenly interrupted. Cobel, meanwhile, shifts from policing that boundary to being cast out by Lumon.
