In a June 30, 2021 interview, he told The Daily Beast he expected to be paroled from Nevada’s High Desert Prison on August 12. Later reporting says Thorson died in Los Angeles on August 16, 2024, at age 65.
What the 2021 prison report said
In an interview published June 30, 2021, Marlow Stern of The Daily Beast spoke with Thorson at High Desert Prison in Nevada. Thorson said he expected to be paroled on August 12 and described his custody as connected to a parole violation. That account explains the headline’s “out of prison” framing, but it does not establish a later release date or his status after the interview.

Thorson’s connection to the Wonderland case
Thorson was associated with the Wonderland murders investigation as a witness in the case against Eddie Nash. In the 2021 interview, he recounted what he said he saw and heard involving Nash, Gregory Diles, John Holmes, and events surrounding the case. Those are Thorson’s recollections; they should not be treated as independently established facts simply because they appear in a first-person account.
The interview also presents conflicting assessments of his reliability. It reports that a detective characterized Thorson as an unusually effective liar, while author Michael Connelly said Thorson’s retelling had been remarkably consistent. Neither attributed assessment alone resolves the credibility questions; readers should distinguish Thorson’s account from corroborated evidence and the trial record.

LAPD Robbery-Homicide Division detective Bob Souza, identified in the interview as a 10-year veteran of the division, recalled: “There was more blood in that scene than I’d ever seen,” he says, describing it as even gorier than the Tate-LaBianca murders. This is Souza’s retrospective characterization as quoted in the interview.
What later reporting establishes
A retrospective report published by Variety and syndicated by AllSides says Thorson died in Los Angeles on August 16, 2024, aged 65. That later report changes how the 2021 prison headline should be read: it describes an episode in his life, not a current prison update.

Apple Podcasts lists Michael Connelly’s documentary series The Wonderland Murders & the Secret History of Hollywood as examining the case and Thorson’s role. Its listing says he testified against Nash and later disappeared into witness protection. That is the podcast’s series description, not a primary court record.

Thorson’s memoir, Behind the Candelabra: My Life with Liberace, is relevant to his life with Liberace. The cited interview does not establish it as a definitive history of the Wonderland murders, so it should be read as memoir rather than a substitute for case documentation.
