Wonder Man gives Trevor Slattery a chance to take charge of his own story—but whether that redeems Iron Man 3’s Mandarin twist is a matter of interpretation, not a verdict the series can impose on every viewer. Its strongest case is character development: the actor once caught up in other people’s schemes is now asked to choose what matters and act for himself.
Does Wonder Man redeem the Mandarin twist?
It can reframe the twist without erasing it. In Iron Man 3, Trevor Slattery was the actor behind the Mandarin persona. Wonder Man returns to Trevor as an actor trying to find work in Hollywood, putting his performance and his choices at the center of a new story.

Co-creator and head writer Andrew Guest describes Trevor as someone who has often seemed like “the victim of circumstance.” In Guest’s account, Trevor was used by antagonists in Iron Man 3, became caught up with the heroes in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, and again enters a larger situation in Wonder Man. The difference, Guest says, is that this time Trevor takes ownership and acts rather than simply blaming circumstance.
That shift supports a meaningful interpretation of “redeems”: the series gives Trevor agency and lets his choices carry weight. Guest says Trevor must work out what matters to him and make sacrifices. “Even though he’s not putting on a cape and flying around, Trevor’s doing something selfless and sacrificing,” Guest says. “And, to me, that’s heroism.”

This is a case for enriching Trevor’s character, not proof that every viewer must now approve of the original reveal. The show can add meaning to what came after Iron Man 3 without changing what that twist was or dictating how anyone should feel about it.
What is Wonder Man about?
The eight-episode Marvel Television series follows aspiring actor Simon Williams, played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, and Trevor Slattery, played by Ben Kingsley. Simon learns that director Von Kovak is remaking the in-universe superhero film Wonder Man; both Simon and Trevor pursue roles. Disney describes the series as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
Rank #2
The Hollywood setting makes Trevor’s identity as an actor more than a callback to his old disguise. The series pairs his pursuit of work with Simon’s ambitions, while Guest describes its broader interest as people chasing difficult dreams in the entertainment industry and two outsiders finding friendship. Co-creator and director Destin Daniel Cretton called it “a comedy about two lonely narcissists learning how to be friends.”
What happened to Trevor Slattery after Iron Man 3?
Trevor’s story continued in the Marvel short All Hail the King and later in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Disney lists those titles alongside Iron Man 3 as Trevor’s prior MCU appearances. Wonder Man brings him into a Hollywood story, where he and Simon are both seeking parts in a fictional film remake.

Do you need to watch Iron Man 3 or Shang-Chi first?
No. Guest says the creators wanted a “no-homework show”: earlier MCU appearances add context, but viewers do not need to complete other films or series before starting Wonder Man.
| Viewing route | What it adds |
|---|---|
| Start with Wonder Man | Follows the creators’ stated intent that the series work on its own, without prior MCU viewing. |
| Revisit Trevor’s earlier appearances | Iron Man 3, All Hail the King, and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings provide context for the Mandarin persona and Trevor’s history. |
How many episodes of Wonder Man are there, and where can you watch it?
Wonder Man is an eight-episode series that debuted on Disney+ on January 27, 2026. Disney’s episode listing runs from “Matinee” to “Yucca Valley.” Streaming catalogs and availability can change; check Disney+ for the current listing in your region.
