Saturday Night (2024) is a breathless dramatization of the 90 minutes before the first broadcast of the program that became Saturday Night Live. Gabriel LaBelle plays Lorne Michaels, surrounded by performers, writers, executives, host George Carlin and musical guest Billy Preston as an unfinished NBC experiment races toward its 11:30 p.m. airtime.

Saturday Night (2024) is a 109-minute, R-rated backstage comedy-drama about the 90 minutes before the first broadcast of the television program that became Saturday Night Live. Directed by Jason Reitman and co-written by Reitman and Gil Kenan, it follows Gabriel LaBelle’s Lorne Michaels as he tries to get an unfinished, highly unconventional NBC variety show on the air at 11:30 p.m. on October 11, 1975.

The film is energetic, crowded and deliberately chaotic. Its subject is not the complete history of Saturday Night Live, nor is it a documentary or a verbatim reconstruction. It is a fictionalized dramatization of the people, arguments, production problems and institutional doubts surrounding the program’s first broadcast.

What is Saturday Night about?

The film takes place almost entirely during the countdown to the premiere of NBC’s new late-night show, originally titled Saturday Night. The familiar name Saturday Night Live came later; the movie uses the original title to place the viewer at the moment before the program had an identity, audience or guaranteed future.

Lorne Michaels is attempting to hold together an experimental show that is still in pieces as airtime approaches. The sketches are not fully settled, the credits and stage elements are in motion, the cast and writers are volatile, and NBC executives are uncertain whether the project can work. The film turns that situation into a real-time race: each new disagreement or technical problem threatens to derail the broadcast.

That structure gives the movie its central tension. Viewers already know that Saturday Night Live eventually became a major cultural institution, but the characters do not have that knowledge. The film uses the known outcome as dramatic irony while making the immediate question urgent: can this particular show survive long enough to go live?

Is Saturday Night a true story?

It is based on real people and the real circumstances surrounding the first broadcast, but it is not a documentary. The movie presents a dramatized and compressed version of events. Dialogue has been reconstructed, scenes have been arranged for dramatic effect, and the frantic pace heightens the sense of instability.

The safest way to describe it is as “a dramatization of the 90 minutes before the premiere” or “a fictionalized backstage reconstruction of the first Saturday Night Live broadcast.” Specific arguments, contract disputes, backstage encounters and character behaviors should be understood as events depicted by the film unless independently confirmed by historical reporting.

This distinction matters because the movie is designed as a suspenseful ensemble drama rather than a complete historical record. It focuses on the emotional and creative pressure of the night, not on documenting every conversation that occurred at NBC’s Studio 8H.

The cast and the real people they portray

The large ensemble is one of the film’s main attractions. It brings together the young performers and writers who would define the show’s early identity, along with executives, guests and other figures from the program’s orbit.

Actor Role
Gabriel LaBelle Lorne Michaels
Rachel Sennott Rosie Shuster
Cory Michael Smith Chevy Chase
Ella Hunt Gilda Radner
Dylan O’Brien Dan Aykroyd
Matt Wood John Belushi
Emily Fairn Laraine Newman
Kim Matula Jane Curtin
Lamorne Morris Garrett Morris
Josh Brener Alan Zweibel
Cooper Hoffman Dick Ebersol
Matthew Rhys George Carlin
Nicholas Braun Jim Henson and Andy Kaufman, in separate roles
Jon Batiste Billy Preston
Willem Dafoe David Tebet
J.K. Simmons Milton Berle

Several of the central performers—Gilda Radner, Dan Aykroyd, John Belushi, Chevy Chase, Jane Curtin, Laraine Newman and Garrett Morris—would become foundational members of the show’s early ensemble. The film also emphasizes that the first broadcast depended on more than its regular cast. George Carlin was the host, Billy Preston was the musical guest, and figures such as Rosie Shuster, Alan Zweibel, Dick Ebersol, David Tebet, Jim Henson, Andy Kaufman and Milton Berle represent the wider creative and institutional environment.

Why the countdown format works

A conventional biographical film might begin with Lorne Michaels’s early career and continue through the creation, launch and success of Saturday Night Live. Saturday Night takes the opposite approach. It limits the time frame and places nearly every character under immediate pressure.

The result is a movie about coordination as much as comedy. A sketch has to be ready, a performer has to commit, a network has to approve the plan, and the production has to move toward air even when nobody appears completely prepared. The countdown also prevents the story from becoming a simple success narrative. The audience knows the show will eventually happen, but the characters still have to solve each problem in sequence.

The visual style reinforces that pressure. Moving cameras, rapid transitions and a constantly shifting ensemble create the feeling of a backstage space that is too small for the number of personalities and crises inside it. Production coverage described a 33-day shoot and extensive moving-camera work intended to convey the frantic environment. The film feels restless by design: conversations overlap, people cross through rooms, and attention is repeatedly pulled toward the next emergency.

What kind of movie is it?

Saturday Night is best classified as a biographical comedy-drama, a show-business ensemble drama or a backstage historical comedy. It is not a sketch-comedy compilation and does not attempt to recreate an entire season of the television show.

The comedy comes from personality clashes, absurd production circumstances and the contrast between the show’s ambition and its unfinished state. The drama comes from the possibility that the experiment could fail before it has a chance to establish itself. The film’s subject is therefore both creative and institutional: it asks how an unconventional program gets past the people and systems that are not sure they want it.

Performance, tone and critical response

Contemporary reaction was generally favorable, especially toward the ensemble performances and the movie’s ability to recreate the velocity of a live television production. Gabriel LaBelle’s performance as Michaels received particular awards-season attention; he was nominated for Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Motion Picture—Musical or Comedy at the 82nd Golden Globe Awards.

The film’s main strength is also its most obvious risk. The crowded cast and relentless movement make the production feel alive, but the broad characterizations can sometimes reduce complicated real people to sharply defined comic types. Viewers who enjoy fast, overlapping backstage dramas are likely to respond to the momentum. Those who prefer a slower historical account may find the pace tiring or the dramatization too heightened.

Rotten Tomatoes lists the movie as a comedy-drama with a 109-minute runtime and records its theatrical release as October 11, 2024. Review scores and audience figures on aggregation sites can change, so numerical ratings should be checked immediately before publication rather than treated as permanent facts. Metacritic’s user response is generally favorable, while review coverage commonly identifies the ensemble and kinetic style as strengths and the compressed characterization as a limitation.

Where to watch Saturday Night

U.S. availability changes by date, platform, account and territory. Sony’s current title listings identify the film as available on Blu-ray and Digital. A current U.S. availability check lists subscription viewing through Hulu, fuboTV and YouTube TV, as well as digital rental or purchase through Amazon Video, the Apple TV Store and Fandango at Home. Physical DVD and Blu-ray listings have also appeared through retailers including Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

For readers who want a permanent physical copy, the Saturday Night 2024 Blu-ray is the most direct home-video option supported by the current release information. A DVD edition may suit viewers who do not use Blu-ray, while digital rental or purchase is more convenient for immediate viewing without waiting for a disc.

Streaming listings should be treated as a snapshot, not a promise of permanent availability. Netflix’s title page has carried the film but currently reports that it is unavailable in the viewer’s country. In other words, “Saturday Night is on Netflix” is too broad a statement unless the reader’s country and the date of the check are specified.

Music by Jon Batiste

Jon Batiste composed the original score and also appears in the film as Billy Preston, the musical guest on the first broadcast. Those are two separate parts of his contribution: Batiste’s score supports the movie’s modern dramatic momentum, while his performance as Preston connects the film to the historical television event it recreates.

Listeners interested in that first aspect can look for the Saturday Night original score by Jon Batiste. It should not be confused with a complete album of the fictional broadcast’s music or with a recording of every song heard in the film.

Box office and awards context

Third-party industry estimates reported approximately $9.51 million in domestic theatrical gross, $466,589 internationally and about $9.98 million worldwide. The Numbers also reported an estimated $295,316 in domestic physical-disc sales. These are industry estimates, not an official Sony financial statement, and should be labeled accordingly.

The Golden Globe nomination for Gabriel LaBelle is a confirmed awards-season distinction. The film should not be described as an Oscar nominee based on the available Academy records.

Is Saturday Night suitable for all viewers?

No. The film is rated R for language throughout, sexual references, some drug use and brief graphic nudity. Viewers looking for a family-friendly account of television history should choose accordingly.

What the film does—and does not—cover

The movie is principally about the birth of the program. It does not provide a season-by-season history of Saturday Night Live, a full biography of Lorne Michaels or an account of the show’s later cast changes and cultural legacy. Those subjects require separate historical sources.

Its narrower focus is an advantage if you want a concentrated story about creative risk and live production. It is less suitable if you want a comprehensive reference guide to SNL or a definitive account of every event on October 11, 1975. The film’s value lies in the pressure-cooker perspective: it imagines what it felt like to be inside the building before anyone knew whether the experiment would work.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Saturday Night is a fast, performance-driven dramatization of the 90 minutes before the first Saturday Night Live broadcast. Its historical setting and ensemble are real, but its dialogue and scene construction are deliberately fictionalized. Watch it for the pressure, personality clashes and live-production chaos—not as a definitive documentary history of SNL.
