The sketch disclosed that its notes had been changed since rehearsal, making the cast’s surprised reactions part of the joke.
What happened in “Passing Notes”
The sketch put Gosling in the role of a school principal and Ashley Padilla in the role of Ms. Perry, a teacher. A message on screen told viewers: “The Contents Of These Notes Have Been Changed Since Rehearsal.” As the characters read the notes, the performers’ visible amusement suggested they were reacting to unfamiliar material.
One note had Ms. Perry asking ChatGPT for makeover tips. Gosling and Mikey Day also reacted to notes during the classroom scene. The premise was not simply that the notes were funny: the sketch invited viewers to watch the performers encounter them and try to keep the scene going. The Atlantic described the surprise itself as an unusual central device for a sketch. The Atlantic’s account discusses how that reveal shaped the scene.
Why the changed notes made the cast breaking character part of the joke
In a conventional sketch, a performer’s laugh can look like a slip. Here, the on-screen notice gave viewers a reason to interpret the laughter and pauses as reactions to new material. That made the cast’s effort to stay in character—and their apparent difficulty doing so—part of the comic effect.
