Russell Crowe’s reaction to Gladiator II changed in tone over time. Before the sequel’s November 2024 release, he said he felt “slightly uncomfortable” that it was being made without him and spoke of melancholy and jealousy when reflecting on the original. In comments reported in December 2025, he was more critical, saying the sequel’s creative team had missed the first film’s “moral core.”
Why Crowe felt uneasy before the sequel came out
In a June 12, 2024 interview with US podcast host Kyle Meredith, Crowe explained that Maximus’s death in the first film meant he had no part in the sequel’s story. “I’m slightly uncomfortable, the fact that they’re making another one, you know? Because of course, I’m dead, and I have no say in what gets done,” he said, as reported by The Guardian.

Crowe added that some things he had heard about the new story did not fit Maximus’s moral journey, but said it was not his place to intervene. These were pre-release comments, not a review of a film he had already seen.
The original brought melancholy as well as jealousy
Crowe also reflected on the age he was when he made Gladiator and on the opportunities the film opened for him. He described “a tinge of melancholy” and “a tinge of jealousy,” recalling, “Because I remember when I had tendons.” His remarks pointed to mixed feelings about revisiting the film and his younger self, rather than simple hostility toward the sequel.

What changed after Gladiator II was released
In comments from a Triple J interview reported by The Guardian in December 2025, Crowe criticized the people behind the sequel for not understanding what made the original special. “It wasn’t the pomp. It wasn’t the circumstance. It wasn’t the action. It was the moral core,” he said. He recalled a “daily fight” during the first film’s production to protect Maximus’s moral character, including resisting proposed sex scenes that he felt would undermine the character’s power.
