RTMP and RTSP do different jobs. RTMP commonly sends an encoder’s live feed to a streaming server over a persistent TCP connection. RTSP sets up and controls a media session; the audio and video are commonly transported separately using RTP. For a typical encoder-to-platform contribution feed, RTMP is often the straightforward fit. For an IP camera feeding a media server, RTSP/RTP is common. Neither choice guarantees that two particular devices or services will work together: check their supported protocols, codecs, transport options, and network requirements.
RTMP vs. RTSP at a glance
| Question | RTMP | RTSP with RTP |
|---|---|---|
| Common role | Carry a contribution stream from an encoder to a server or streaming service. | Set up and control a media session, often involving an IP camera; RTP commonly carries the media separately. |
| How media is carried | Commonly over RTMP on a persistent TCP connection. | Commonly over RTP, with transport behavior depending on the implementation. |
| Common source | Software or hardware encoder sending a live production feed. | An RTSP-capable IP camera or another supported media source. |
| Network detail | TCP 1935 is a Wowza-documented default, not a universal requirement. Wowza technical specifications. | TCP 554 is a Wowza-documented default, not a universal requirement. RTP may use UDP or be interleaved over TCP, depending on endpoint support. Wowza technical specifications. |
| Typical viewer delivery | A server can convert or deliver an incoming feed using viewer-oriented protocols such as HLS, MPEG-DASH, or WebRTC. The ingest protocol does not dictate the playback protocol. | |
The table describes common workflows, not protocol mandates. RTMP and RTSP are not interchangeable labels: RTSP handles session setup and control rather than typically carrying the continuous media itself. RFC 2326, the IETF’s April 1998 RTSP 1.0 specification, says, “It does not typically deliver the continuous media.” RFC 2326
What RTMP does in a live-streaming workflow
RTMP is commonly used to send a live contribution feed from an encoder—such as streaming software or a hardware encoder—to a server or streaming platform. The encoder connects to an ingest endpoint and sends the feed over TCP. When a platform provides an RTMP URL and stream key, RTMP is the usual match unless that platform specifies a different ingest option. Prefer RTMPS, which protects the connection using TLS, when the service supports it and the contribution path crosses an untrusted network. Support and settings are platform-specific. Wowza’s RTMP and RTMPS workflow guidance
What RTSP and RTP do
RTSP is a session-control protocol: a client can use it to establish and control a media session. RTP commonly carries the audio and video separately. The standards permit different transport arrangements, and actual behavior depends on the client, server, and device. This is why “the camera supports RTSP” is not enough, by itself, to establish compatibility with a particular media server.

RTSP version also matters. RFC 2326 specifies RTSP 1.0, published in April 1998. RFC 7826 specifies RTSP 2.0, published in December 2016, and obsoletes RFC 2326; it says RTSP 2.0 is not generally backward-compatible with RTSP 1.0 beyond basic version negotiation. A product that says “RTSP” does not necessarily implement version 2.0. Check the exact version and supported behavior when connecting devices from different vendors. RFC 7826
Which should you use?
Choose RTMP for an encoder-to-server contribution feed
If OBS or another encoder is sending a production feed to a destination that supplies an RTMP ingest URL and stream key, RTMP is the straightforward choice. Use the destination’s current ingest settings rather than assuming that every service accepts the same protocol or configuration. Use RTMPS if the destination supports it and you need TLS protection across an untrusted network.

Choose RTSP/RTP for a compatible IP camera feed
If an IP camera exposes an RTSP stream and your media server accepts that camera’s RTSP/RTP behavior, RTSP/RTP is a common way to ingest the feed. Check the camera’s exact model documentation for its stream URL syntax, authentication, codecs, RTSP version, and transport options. Manufacturers may use proprietary URL formats, and the server must support the camera’s media formats. Wowza’s IP-camera connection guidance
Choose the viewer protocol separately
If your goal is playback in a browser, mobile app, or OTT player, decide how the server will deliver the stream to those clients. Ingesting with RTMP or RTSP/RTP does not mean the viewer will receive RTMP or RTSP. Wowza documents HLS, MPEG-DASH, and WebRTC among its supported outputs; available outputs depend on the server configuration and client needs. Wowza technical specifications

Network, firewall, and security checks
- Confirm ports with both endpoints. Wowza documents TCP 1935 as its RTMP default and TCP 554 as its RTSP default. These are vendor configuration defaults, not universal requirements; deployments can use other ports.
- For RTSP/RTP, check the media transport as well as control. RTSP control and RTP media have distinct roles. RTP may travel over UDP or be interleaved over TCP, depending on implementation. If a camera works on the local network but not across a firewall or NAT, check which transport is configured and supported at both ends; TCP interleaving may help where UDP is blocked.
- Assess encryption for both channels. RTMPS uses TLS for RTMP contribution when supported. With RTSP, secure control does not automatically mean that RTP media is encrypted: Wowza distinguishes RTSPS control protection from SRTP media protection. Check what each endpoint supports and configure protection for the media path as needed. Wowza security guidance
- Check authentication and network policy. Credentials, firewall rules, NAT behavior, and server access controls can prevent a connection even when the protocol names appear to match.
How to connect an IP camera to a streaming server
There is no single camera URL or universal setup path: syntax and options vary by manufacturer and model. Use this checklist for an RTSP/RTP camera-to-server workflow.
- Verify the camera’s capabilities. In the manufacturer’s documentation for the exact model, confirm RTSP support, the RTSP version if stated, supported codecs, authentication method, and available RTP transport modes.
- Find the camera’s stream URL. Copy the model-specific RTSP URL format from its documentation and supply the correct address and credentials. Do not assume a URL pattern from another camera brand will work.
- Check the server’s ingest support. Confirm that the media server accepts the camera’s RTSP/RTP session, codecs, and authentication. A protocol match alone does not guarantee interoperability.
- Test on the local network first. Confirm that the server can establish the session and receive both audio and video before adding remote access or a firewall change.
- Set transport and network access deliberately. If UDP-based RTP cannot pass the network, test interleaved TCP only if both endpoints support it. Open or forward only the ports and paths required by the actual configuration.
- Configure viewer delivery separately. Choose a server output such as HLS, MPEG-DASH, or WebRTC if required by the playback clients, and verify that the server and clients support the chosen output.
- Protect the connection. Use the camera and server’s supported authentication and encryption options. Check control-channel and media-channel protection separately.
Troubleshooting common connection failures
The stream URL is rejected or the server cannot connect
Recheck the exact model’s URL syntax, address, path, credentials, and authentication requirements. Camera vendors may use proprietary URL patterns. Then verify that the server accepts the camera’s RTSP version and session behavior.

The session connects, but there is no picture or sound
Check whether the server supports the camera’s video and audio codecs and whether the camera is actually sending those tracks. RTSP establishes or controls the session; it does not ensure that the endpoints share compatible media formats.
The camera works locally but fails across the network
Check firewall and NAT rules and determine whether RTP is using UDP ports that cannot cross the network. If both endpoints support it, try RTP interleaved over TCP. Confirm the configured control and media ports instead of relying on defaults alone.

RTSP control is protected, but the media may not be
Check the encryption mode for RTP separately from RTSP or RTSPS control. Where supported and required, configure SRTP for media; do not assume secure control automatically encrypts the media stream.
The stream reaches the server, but viewers cannot play it
Inspect the server’s output configuration and the playback clients’ supported protocols. The ingest can be working correctly while the viewer delivery format is unsuitable or not enabled.
