In Netflix’s Full Swing season 3, he said the episode reminded him to protect his loved ones and refocus on golf.
What McIlroy meant by “wake-up call”
In Full Swing season 3, McIlroy said: “I’ve always tried to be protective of my loved ones from people that have ill intentions. I think it was a wake-up call for me to say, ‘Let’s just focus on the golf for a little bit.’” Us Weekly’s account places the remark in the context of the attention that followed his divorce filing.

He also explained the tension between privacy and public life: “There’s parts of my life that I like to keep as private as possible. Unfortunately, in this line of work, that isn’t always possible.” His comments point to the media scrutiny as the wake-up call, and to a desire to shield those close to him while returning his attention to golf. They do not set out all the couple’s private reasons for filing or getting back together.
What happened with the divorce filing
McIlroy filed for divorce from Stoll in May 2024, after seven years of marriage, and filed to dismiss the proceedings the following month. A later retrospective gives the dates as May 13 and June 11, respectively; those specific dates are reported there, rather than independently established here. Us Weekly reported on the filing and dismissal; Golf Monthly’s retrospective supplies the day-specific chronology.

Us Weekly reported that the couple made their first public appearance together after reconciling at the 2024 U.S. Open. The available remarks do not amount to a detailed account of what led to the filing or how they resolved their differences. Claims about specific private causes should not be treated as McIlroy’s explanation unless attributed to him directly.
What he said about England—and what it does not prove
In a separate scene filmed around the 2024 U.S. Open, McIlroy told Martin Kaymer: “If it was up to her, she wouldn’t move to England straightaway, but she definitely wants to spend more time there.” This is a comment about Stoll wanting to spend more time in England; it does not confirm that the family moved there.
