May 2020: Their first child is born
The Los Angeles Times reports that their son was born in May 2020. His initially announced name was later changed to X Æ A-Xii to comply with California naming law. The Associated Press described the child as about one year old in its 2021 account.
September 2021: Musk says they are “semi-separated”
In a statement to Page Six reproduced by the Los Angeles Times, Musk said: “We are semi-separated but still love each other, see each other frequently and are on great terms.” He attributed the situation largely to work and distance: his Tesla and SpaceX work took him to Texas or overseas, while Grimes’s work was mainly in Los Angeles. This was Musk’s description at the time, not a definitive account of their private relationship.

December 2021 and March 2022: A second child and a “fluid” relationship
Us Weekly’s recap of a March 2022 Vanity Fair profile reports that their daughter, Exa Dark Sideræl, was born by surrogate in December 2021. In the profile, Grimes said, “I would probably refer to him as my boyfriend, but we’re very fluid.” She also described them as living in separate houses and seeing each other frequently. She later said publicly that they had broken up again. These statements describe an evolving status, rather than a single, precisely dated final breakup.
2023: A third child is reported
Us Weekly reports that a third child, a son named Techno Mechanicus, arrived in 2023. This detail comes from retrospective entertainment reporting, rather than an independently verified birth record.

2023–2026: Co-parenting and custody enter public discussion
Us Weekly reports that custody litigation became public in 2023. It also recounts Grimes’s 2024 allegation that she had not seen one of the children for five months. In January 2026, The Daily Beast reported that Grimes discussed children’s privacy and a disagreement with Musk about screen time in public posts. These are attributed accounts, not proof of a court finding or a reliable account of the present legal arrangement.

A person’s public account of contact with a child is not the same as a court finding.
