Roku’s pause ads were real, but May 2025 reports overstated where they appeared. Roku said its format was running in The Roku Channel—not over HDMI inputs or across third-party apps. Separately, Roku acknowledged that a software issue made Disney+ HDR look washed out on a subset of Roku TVs. The problems coincided; there is no evidence that the ads caused the HDR bug.
What Roku’s “Pause Ads” actually were
A pause ad is an advertisement shown while a viewer has paused a movie or show. Roku’s advertising materials describe the format as appearing during a pause, giving an advertiser visibility without interrupting playback. In May 2025, Roku said its own pause-ad placement was available within The Roku Channel.
That distinction matters: an ad or branded pause screen seen in one app does not, by itself, mean Roku has placed an operating-system ad over everything on the television. Roku told 9to5Google that its pause ads were not then being shown over HDMI sources or content in various third-party apps.

Roku’s clarification followed reports that suggested ads might appear over any paused content. A user example involving another app did not establish that it came from Roku’s pause-ad system; Roku said it was not its own format. Earlier concepts or patents involving ads during pauses on HDMI content are not proof that such a feature was deployed.

There was a separate policy development in April 2025: Roku changed its developer certification criteria, removing a restriction that had limited paused ad breaks to static graphics. That gave developers more flexibility for app-level experiences; it did not prove Roku was inserting ads system-wide.
What happened to HDR
At about the same time, viewers reported HDR video that looked pale, washed out, blue-toned, or lower in contrast than expected. Roku acknowledged a specific issue: Disney+ HDR content appeared washed out on a small subset of Roku TVs after a recent software update. The reports centered on the Roku OS 14.5 release family. Roku’s issue tracker marked the issue as pending release and said a fix was being rolled out.

Some users also reported color problems in Netflix and other apps. Those reports are worth noting, but they are not the same as Roku’s narrower official acknowledgment. Nor does this mean every Roku TV—or every Roku streaming player—had the same defect. Separate community reports described Dolby Vision black screens on at least some Streaming Stick 4K devices running OS 14.5; that was a different symptom from washed-out Disney+ HDR on some TVs.

But the available evidence does not link them causally. Roku described one as an advertising placement in its own channel and the other as an HDR playback problem. There is no cited evidence that rendering pause ads altered the HDR pipeline.

How to check whether the HDR issue applies to you
A pale-looking picture does not automatically mean the TV panel is defective or that Roku OS is at fault. Possible causes include an app-specific playback problem, incorrect HDR metadata handling, a TV picture-mode change, an HDMI handshake issue, Dolby Vision versus HDR10 compatibility, or simply playing a title that is SDR rather than HDR.
- Check the title and playback path. Confirm that the program is offered in HDR and note whether you are watching it in a Roku app or through an HDMI device.
- Compare the same title elsewhere. If possible, play it through another streaming box, console, or the TV’s own app. If the picture changes only on one Roku app or device, that is useful diagnostic information—not proof that the panel is faulty.
- Record your software details. On Roku, open Settings → System → About and note the model and software version. Then use the system software-update option to check for a newer build. Availability and menu wording can vary by model.
Steps to try if HDR looks wrong
- Restart the Roku. Where available, use Settings → System → Power → System restart. Some models do not show the Power submenu. A restart may clear a temporary playback problem, but it is not a confirmed permanent fix for a firmware-level HDR bug.
- Update the system and app. Check for Roku software updates and make sure the affected streaming app is current. A later software or app release may address an issue, but the historical reports do not establish a universal fix for every model.
- Reinstall the affected app if the problem appears app-specific. Highlight the app on the Home screen, press the Star button, choose Remove channel, restart the Roku, then reinstall the app from the Streaming Store. This can help with a damaged app installation; it should not be mistaken for a proven fix to an operating-system HDR defect.
- For an external HDMI source only, check that input’s HDMI mode. Roku Community guidance for HDMI-related HDR negotiation issues suggests Settings → TV Inputs → [input] → HDMI Mode, then checking Standard or Auto. This is not a fix for HDR playing inside the Disney+ Roku app.
- Contact Roku if it persists. Roku Community moderators asked affected users for device model, software version, app build, and a tracker ID. When the problem is on screen, press Home five times, then Back five times to generate a tracker ID, and include it in a support request.
A factory reset is a last resort, not a recommended first response: it removes account information, apps, and settings, and the cited reports do not establish that resetting reliably corrected the HDR issue.

Can you turn off Roku pause ads?
The May 2025 reporting did not establish a universal switch for disabling pause ads. Roku’s ad-preference controls cover certain sensitive-ad categories and non-video banner ads in Roku menus and screensavers; Roku says they do not control video ads or advertising inside partner apps. An ad-free subscription to a streaming service likewise does not automatically remove ads placed by Roku or by another app. The relevant question is where the ad appears and which service is showing it.

For viewers, pause ads represent a trade-off: they can be less disruptive than an ad inserted before or during playback, but they also monetize a moment in a service or interface the viewer may consider part of the product. Roku’s ad product was real; the claim that it was then overlaying every input was not supported by the company’s clarification.
