On a Roku TV in the United States, press Home on the remote and select Live TV to open Roku’s free live-TV guide. Roku now advertises more than 500 free live streaming channels through The Roku Channel—not just 100—but the number shown in your guide can be lower and can vary by device, location, and date. These internet-delivered channels need an internet connection; they are not a substitute for an antenna when you want local broadcast stations.
Find Roku’s free live channels
- Press Home on your Roku remote.
- Select Live TV.
- Browse the guide, highlight a program, and press OK to watch.
If your home screen does not have a Live TV tile, open The Roku Channel and choose Live TV. The exact layout can differ by Roku TV model, software version, and setup. Roku’s setup instructions explain the Live TV input options.
While watching live TV, press Left on the remote’s directional pad to open the guide. Use up and down to move through channels and left and right to browse programs. Roku says its guide can show listings up to seven days ahead. It is a guide to current and upcoming programs, not necessarily a permanent directory of every channel available everywhere.
Why Roku says 500+, but your guide may show fewer
Roku’s live-TV page advertises more than 500 free live channels. Its support pages use other counts: one describes more than 165 live streaming channels in the Live TV Channel Guide, while another refers to 350+ free channels. These figures are not presented as interchangeable totals, and Roku does not provide one single count that applies to every device and location. The safest expectation is that the guide shows the channels currently available to your setup, not necessarily the entire advertised catalog.

Roku’s support documentation says live streaming listings in the guide are supported in the United States. Channel availability can change, and the guide’s selection may vary. For a current check, use Roku’s Channel Checker and live-TV page rather than relying on an old channel list.
What can you watch?
Roku promotes a changing mix of live and rolling news, weather, sports coverage, food and home, reality, movies, classic television, children’s and family programming, music, lifestyle shows, crime, drama, comedy, and game shows. Examples Roku gives for its guide include ABC News Live and Lively Place. The lineup changes, so examples are not a promise that a particular channel will be available on every Roku TV at all times.

These are streaming channels: programming is delivered over the internet in a scheduled, channel-style format. That differs from selecting an on-demand movie or episode, where you choose a title to play. The free live channels are generally ad-supported; “free” means no subscription fee for that programming, not an ad-free experience. Roku describes this kind of service as free ad-supported linear streaming TV.
For documentaries and factual programming, browse the guide’s news, history, nature, science, crime, and lifestyle offerings when available. Roku does not guarantee a permanent dedicated channel lineup, so check the current guide for what is actually streaming.

Free Roku streaming versus antenna channels
Roku’s internet channels and local broadcast television are separate sources. Roku’s free live-TV catalog does not mean you receive every major cable network or local ABC, CBS, FOX, or NBC station. An antenna can receive local over-the-air stations where a usable signal is available; reception depends on your location, antenna placement, terrain, and building obstructions.

Roku’s support page on the Live TV Channel Guide distinguishes streaming listings from over-the-air listings. Roku TV antenna instructions are for TVs with a built-in tuner; a Roku streaming stick or player does not receive antenna broadcasts by itself.

Add local channels with an antenna
- Connect a compatible HDTV antenna to the TV’s Ant/Cable In port. If it is amplified, connect its power supply.
- Press Home and select Live TV.
- Follow the on-screen prompts to scan for channels.
If Live TV is missing, go to Settings > TV inputs > Live TV > Set up input; labels can vary by model and software. After scanning, local stations the antenna can receive may appear in the Live TV guide alongside streaming channels.

- No Live TV tile: Check Settings > TV inputs > Live TV > Set up input, or open The Roku Channel and select Live TV. Menu labels may differ.
- Streaming guide is empty or will not load: Confirm the TV is connected to the internet. Roku’s streaming guide listings require internet access.
- Fewer channels than expected: Roku’s advertised catalog, support-page counts, and the guide’s currently available listings differ. Check the Channel Checker and remember that region, device, and date can affect availability.
- Antenna scan finds no stations: Reseat the coaxial cable, confirm an amplified antenna is powered, and scan again after moving it. Try a higher position near a window, away from thick walls, metal, concrete, and large appliances. If you are very close to broadcast towers, try switching off the amplifier; a signal that is too strong can overload the tuner.
- Local listings are absent: A streaming channel guide does not guarantee local network affiliates. Scan an antenna if your Roku TV has a tuner, and check what reception is possible in your area.

When free channels are not enough
The Roku Channel is a useful no-subscription starting point for news, weather, entertainment, and background viewing. It is not automatically a full cable replacement: premium networks, particular local affiliates, and many live sports options may require a separate paid service. Roku lists services such as Sling and Fubo as additional options, but channel lineups and local availability depend on the service and market. Check the provider’s current lineup before subscribing, especially if you need a specific network or team.
If you already own a working Roku TV, you do not need another Roku player just to access its Live TV guide. Consider an antenna only if you want local over-the-air reception and your location can receive a signal; consider a paid live-TV service only if you need channels the free guide and antenna do not provide.
