Susan Levin, later known as Susan Downey, was producing Gothika; Robert Downey Jr. starred in it. Susan later recalled that she recognized his talent but did not feel an immediate romantic spark. From working together to dating
Susan’s 2009 account offers the clearest detail about how their courtship began: after a few weeks of work, she and colleagues exercised together, and Robert asked her to dinner. She said she knew within a few months that the relationship was serious, recalling, “I knew three months in that this was it.” These are Susan’s later recollections, rather than a precise, independently documented dating timeline.
October 2003: A public appearance as a couple
ELLE reports that Susan attended the premiere of The Singing Detective with Robert in October 2003. The appearance is an early public marker of their relationship.

November 2003: The engagement
ELLE dates Robert’s proposal to November 2003. During a joint appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show in 2004, Robert said he proposed just before Susan’s birthday. Susan remembered his tentative wording: “I was wondering if, maybe, you’d wanna, like, be my wife one day.” In her 2009 interview, she placed the engagement ring six months into the relationship. The accounts describe the proposal through later recollections, so the exact interval depends on how the beginning of their relationship is counted.
August 27, 2005: They marry in New York
Robert and Susan married on August 27, 2005, in Amagansett, New York, according to ELLE’s timeline. Harper’s Bazaar also reported in 2009 that they married in a Hamptons wedding that year.
2008–2010: A professional partnership takes shape
Susan helped facilitate Robert’s casting as Sherlock Holmes, ELLE reports. In 2010, the couple launched Team Downey, their production company. These are milestones in their shared work; they do not, on their own, establish how the professional partnership shaped their private relationship.
2012 and 2014: They welcome two children
ELLE records the birth of their son, Exton, in February 2012, and their daughter, Avri, in November 2014. The Independent also described the couple as having two children together in its 2024 coverage.

2024: Susan describes a two-week family rule
In March 2024, Susan told People that the couple try not to spend more than two weeks without seeing each other and having the family together. As quoted by The Independent, she said, “We do have a two-week rule, which often feels too long, but we don’t go more than two weeks without seeing each other and the family being together.” She described their work lives as unpredictable, making the rule a family practice rather than a claim that they are always together.

After winning the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for Oppenheimer on March 10, 2024, Robert thanked Susan in his acceptance speech: “You loved me back to life and that’s why I’m here.” The Associated Press reported the remarks the following day. The speech was a public expression of gratitude, not a full account of the couple’s private history.
The timeline established by these public accounts runs from meeting on a film set in 2003 to marriage, family and continuing creative work.
