Robert Earl Keen’s story since his 2022 touring-retirement announcement has taken a more complicated course than a final goodbye: he says he entered recovery in October 2023, returned to performing partly for financial reasons, and was working on a new record in June 2025. As of October 8, 2026, his official website listed additional performances, while the later release status of that in-progress record is not established here.
What Robert Earl Keen has said about recovery
In an interview published June 23, 2025, by the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Keen said he entered recovery on October 9, 2023. He made the disclosure while explaining why he had resumed performing after describing a tour as a farewell.

“I went into recovery on Oct. 9, 2023, so that combined with there was no income. For financial reasons I had to go back and stuck my toes in the water at first, and I found out it was the only thing I do well,” Keen told interviewer Mac Engel.
He also described what performing feels like to him: “I get on stage and something happens for me. I can capture this whole other level of thinking and projection. I’d say it happens 80 percent of the time. That’s where life works for me.” The 80 percent is Keen’s own estimate of his experience on stage, not a measured statistic.

The interview does not specify a diagnosis, the kind of treatment he received, or his current clinical status. His account is personal testimony, not medical guidance.
Why did Robert Earl Keen return to touring?
Keen announced in January 2022 that he planned to retire from touring that fall, after roughly four decades on the road. His official archive describes the announcement as a planned final run of shows. He later returned to performing; in the 2025 interview, he directly cited financial reasons and his experience on stage as part of the explanation.

That makes “retired” an incomplete description of his current live career. Texas Public Radio reported in August 2026 that Keen had a seven-city tour, culminating in three nights at Floore’s Country Store in September. Suzy Bogguss, Hayes Carll, and Ray Benson were among the performers named in the report. TPR characterized Keen’s continuing performances as sparing.
His official website listed further dates in October, November, and December 2026 when checked on October 8, 2026. Concert listings and ticket availability can change, so consult the artist’s official calendar for current details.

What is known about Keen’s new music?
In the June 2025 Star-Telegram interview, Keen said he was working on a record that was “about half way there.” He described it as “real solid, beautiful and interesting.” Those comments establish the project’s status as he described it at that time, but the available reporting does not establish its title, whether it was subsequently completed, or whether it had been released by October 8, 2026.
Western Chill is a separate, earlier project
Western Chill should not be mistaken for the record Keen discussed in 2025. His official archive says the project came out as a box set in 2023 and became available digitally in June 2024. Official artist material describes companion items including a graphic novel, performance video, and songbook. Current editions and availability may vary.

What Keen has said about life away from the stage
In the 2025 interview, Keen said he enjoys time off in the country with his dog and hunting during hunting season. That is his own description of some of his time away from performing, not a comprehensive account of his private life.

In an August 12, 2026, interview with Texas Public Radio’s Jack Morgan, Keen recalled learning a D chord: “I learned a D chord, and I bet you I sat there and I played for four hours straight, just listening to the sound of a D chord. I just played it over and over and over, and I don’t think I ever stopped thinking from that moment on that I was going to do anything but play music.”

The recollection offers a useful frame for the distinction between retiring from a touring routine and stopping music altogether. Keen announced an end to touring in 2022, later returned to selective performances, and was still discussing work on a record in 2025. In March 2026, the Texas Legislative Conference named him Texan of the Year, according to his official archive; TPR also noted the honor.
