RjDj’s 2009 Little Boots app turned three tracks from an existing album into music that could respond to a listener’s movement and surroundings. It offered a striking alternative to fixed playback—but it was an interactive companion, not a replacement for the album, and its longer-term significance lies more in the idea it tested than in proving a new music business model.
What was the Little Boots app?
RjDj—short for Reality Jockey—was a startup working on interactive music for mobile devices. On December 16, 2009, VentureBeat reported on its collaboration with British electropop artist Little Boots: a paid iPhone app priced at $2.99 at the time, containing three tracks adapted from her already released album. The report called the product the “Little Boots” app; a later historical company summary lists it as “Little Boots – Reactive Remixer.” VentureBeat’s contemporary account describes its launch and features, while the later RjDj history supplies the product name.
This was not a complete album delivered in a different format. It was a small, software-based experience built around selected songs: part listening app, part remix instrument. The music was tied to behaviors and effects that a conventional audio file could not provide on its own.
How did the music react?
The app used the iPhone’s accelerometer to detect movement and its microphone to capture environmental sound. Software used those inputs to alter the listening experience, so playback could vary with the listener and setting. The 2009 report gives two examples:

- Movement: One track became more agitated depending on how quickly the listener walked or how vigorously they shook the phone.
- Surroundings: Another incorporated ambient sounds, including nearby conversation, into the music.
The effects could be subtle in some tracks and dramatically transformative in others, according to VentureBeat. The account does not identify the tracks or provide detailed control mappings, so those specifics should not be inferred.
Reactive, interactive and generative are related—but not identical
Recorded music fixes a performance in advance. Interactive music lets a listener’s actions affect playback; generative music uses rules to produce variable results; reactive music responds to the listener, device or environment in real time. These ideas overlap. RjDj’s app combined fixed songs with sensor-driven changes and effects; the available account does not establish that it composed an entirely new song from scratch on each play.

What did the listener contribute?
The listener was not just choosing a track and pressing play. Walking, shaking the phone, or listening in a sound-rich place could help shape a particular playback. VentureBeat also reported that users could upload unique instances of the generative tracks to RjDj’s website. The company’s “reality jockey” events extended the same participatory idea into gatherings where a performer manipulated effects while attendees listened through headphones. The contemporary report describes both the upload option and the events.
That shift changes the creative bargain. The artist supplies the musical material and rules, while the listener and surroundings help determine the result. It can make listening feel personal and embodied; it also means that no single playback necessarily represents exactly what the artist fixed in the studio.

Why did it look like a possible future for albums?
The 2009 pitch began with a music-business concern: when tracks can be copied or streamed at low marginal cost, an artist may need to offer more than a file. RjDj’s app bundled songs with software, sensor interaction and the possibility of personalized playback. Its $2.99 launch price was a historical app price, not evidence of sales, profit, artist compensation or sustained demand. VentureBeat presented the app as a possible direction for the album, but its account does not report commercial results.
The idea was compelling because a phone could act as a musical instrument rather than a passive player. A track might behave differently on a walk than at home, and fans could help produce distinct versions. That offered a kind of differentiation a standard download could not supply. But a premium app also asked listeners to buy into a particular device, interface and way of listening—not simply to acquire songs.

What did the technology make possible—and what did it cost?
VentureBeat connected RjDj’s composition work to Pure Data (Pd), a graphical programming environment used for audio and signal processing. A later company summary says RjDj’s reactive pieces were called “Scenes,” built using an open-source library called rjlib. These accounts describe a programmable audio framework behind the experience, not proprietary ownership of Pure Data. The historical summary links to the rjlib repository; the contemporary technical context appears in VentureBeat’s report.
Making music behave like software creates possibilities, but it also adds design and maintenance work. The experience depends on hardware, operating systems, app distribution and, for sharing features, online services. Movement-based controls may not suit every listener; environmental sound can be unpredictable; and a song whose effects change in response to input gives the artist less control over exactly what each person hears. A fixed recording is easier to reproduce consistently and preserve as a cultural artifact.

Did RjDj prove that apps would replace albums?
No. The Little Boots app was based on three tracks from an existing album, not a full-album substitute. It demonstrated one way to extend songs into a mobile-native experience, but the contemporary report does not establish that listeners preferred this format, that the product scaled beyond a niche audience, or that it changed the economics of recorded music.
Its more durable prediction was that music could be distributed as an experience shaped by software, not only as a finished file. Interactive and generative ideas have since remained useful ways to think about music and media, but this one app cannot be treated as proof of a direct line to today’s products or of the album’s disappearance. The experiment is best understood as an early prototype: evidence that the album could be reimagined, not evidence that it had been replaced.
What happened to RjDj’s app?
A later historical account says RjDj closed its website and removed its apps from circulation in 2013. That makes the app’s afterlife part of the story: interactive music depends not only on recordings, but also on software, distribution channels and sometimes servers. A surviving app file would not guarantee that it installs or functions on a current device, and the available account does not establish compatibility across legacy devices. The reported withdrawal is documented in the RjDj historical summary.
